In a tavern ofc
At the Topaz Championship, where their collusion didn't net them a win but did entertain a Scorpion Emerald Magistrate, who then assembled them as his newest inquisitorial squad.
3/5 are siblings/half-siblings and grew up together, one is a former slave bought by our father many years ago, and the last was a local villager we were supposed to hang for poaching.

Your IRL hookups are fricking wild.
If D&D: tavern
If Call of Cthulhu: trough private investigator
If Lord of the Rings: Elrond giving quest
At a wedding of a mutual friend.
No. Actual white people are too busy LARPing as minorities.
What if the wedding is a "Royal Wedding"?
One of my current ones started with the party as strangers all on a boat headed to our mutual destination, then surviving a shipwreck and having to make our way inland on foot. Pretty classic, and for good reason.
Previous party:
>At a colosseum
>mercenary thought he would make money there
>the thief and the pirate... Well, take a guess
>the gladiator already lived there
>the bard got knocked out on a tavern brawl that wasn't even his problem and when the city guards came they just took him to the arena
Current party
>party meet at the market of an old shemite town
Glory in the Arena!
>tavern
>tavern
>met on the job (university)
>met on the job (pirate ship; marooned)
>same party as a previous campaign
>met on the job (delivery)
>met on the job (collaborating organizations planning to stab each other in the back)
>met on the road (investigating different rumors in the same town)
>met on the job (various motives that coincided with a magical device exploding into a warp field that shunted us as a group across the continent)
>tavern
>constable's office (after two of us met in a tavern)
3, 4, and 5, died after 1-2 sessions due to scheduling issues. 1 and 9 had the DM burn ou for a year+ before we came back and finished it to some extent.
Mostly through taverns or traveling together, but my favorite so far was in the middle of a mansion raid. Every character had a different reason to infiltrate the place (The owner ended up scamming my PC, another needed to steal some component for a specific ritual, other had the suspicion that the owner had kidnapped a friend, etc.) We found themselves trespassing right at the same time and almost fought each other.
Something about taverns that I enjoy
The last game I ran, the party met up on the road while headed to Kislev. They met because they were fleeing pursuit by a roaving band of beastmen. After reaching the relative safety of a coaching inn, warning the people there, and fighting off a savage attempt to storm it, they chose to travel together.
Ones I've run:
>Jedi younglings taken and hidden after Order 66; grew up together
>met in the morgue, waiting to see the mutilated body of their mutual friend
>already worked for the same organization (done this one multiple times, it's easiest)
>most already worked for the same organization, and they met the other guy busking on the street
>one worked for the mad scientist who kidnapped the others, then turned on his master and freed them
Basically the classic tavern, but they met each other due to their travels being interrupted by trouble on the main road they were taking just before some inclement weather.
Hired to crew the same ship.
>I was the only one who fricking took Profession:sailor
6 years of campaigns:
>Pulled into the mists by Dark Powers
>Found each other on the road traveling to Nightstone
>Acquintences of Syndra Sylvane from 1-off adventures.
>Local Government hired party as a "Hope Squad" to improve generally bad conditions
>Bard was tasked with babysitting sheep and lost them, went around town asking for help and eventually we ended up on the Moon of Lamania.
>Needed a party together for a tournament arc. Party answered an ad.
>Party pickpocketed at a tavern, run after them and end up in the Mists of Ravenloft
>Adventurers going into the cursed city regroup at an old windmill on the edge of the mutagenic haze before going inside. The party meets there.
>Party hired by local government to investigate "the death house"
>Party are officers for a start-up company looking to set up a colony on a thin atmosphere iceball of silicone glass on the ass end of the frontier with only breathable atmosphere in the deep ravines. They receive brochures from their CEO and he invites them out for drinks.
They all knew each other from some war where they were conscripted. War ended, conscripts paid, and they decided to travel to the next town together.
The players meet in the belly of a whale after their two warring ships were destroyed by the great white. Find supplies. Maje a raft. Discern when the beast is surfacing. Cut to induce vomitting. Desperate scramble to survive.
Childhood friends in a backwater town, there is no better way.
>you will never adventure with Beartany Venti
it hurts so much bros
>tattoo shop
>tavern
>captured by goblins
>two hoodlum childhood friends up to no good joined by the city-guard-turned-drunk who used to jail them, leaving retirement to follow them for a big score
>tavern
Is that Brittany Venti?
On a train, started the entire campaign with them getting train robbed in the middle of fantasy 1890s Texas. It's been a fun campaign so far, they're in Northern California now.
My character is a wandering scholar and he met them one by one.
