Guan Yu was an infamous bloated egotist who believed his own hype, taking a stupid spear head position geographically between Wu and Wei at Fan castle. As you can imagine they absolutely demolished him and his men for being so fricking stupid and ignorant of their situation through a political pincer attack to finally expunge him from history.

Practically every single member of his family was murdered except for his youngest son Xing, who went on to do absolutely nothing of note whatsoever.

Guan Yu is revered as someone who shows steadfast loyalty and respect to his brothers. Unfortunately for him this did not extend to the officers serving under him, which led to them screwing him over at Fan Castle.
It's actually a pretty similar scenario with Zhang Fei.

Zhou Yu literally warned Sun Quan about Liu Bei's potential(and he was right). But Lu Su and Sun Quan both wanted Liu Bei to remain a threat to Cao Cao, so they let him have Jing(which was a right call). Sun Quan was just a b***h that freaked out after Liu Bei got Yi and Hanzhong and decided to backstab Guan Yu because Wu was gonna become the weakest of the three kingdoms. Guan Yu's attack on Wei went so well that Cao Cao was scared enough to consider moving his capital.

            Anonymous

It's too bad Zhou Yu died young cause boy did Wu needed his insights. Dude actually had a plan back to reduce Liu Bei's influence and predicted a few major events like Yuan Shu being a psycho, Ma Chao being a treacherous dick along a few others. Dude was on the pulse of what was happening and had great foresight.

Sun Quan freaked out after Liu Bei conquered Yi because Liu Bei blocked Sun Quan from doing that very thing using some excuse about protecting his kinsmen Liu Zhang which is a flat out lie because Liu Bei had no proof he was a descendant of the Han emperors. Guan Yu fricked over Wu first, not Sun Quan just being an uppity gay. Guan Yu personally insulted Sun Quan, and the generals of Wu, then he raided a Wu supply depot to feed his campaign against Cao Ren. In short, Guan Yu played a stupid game and won a stupid prize.

        >How was he an idiot? Liu bei was for sure, guan Yu was not.
Historically, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei was the big brain military guys of Shu for the most part(Fa Zheng was ). Half of the stuff Zhuge got credited with in the novel was stuff Liu or Zhang.
Kinda funny how the book also uses Zhang Fei as a scapegoat for Liu's less virtuous behaviour at times.

          Anonymous

          Example...
          Romance version:
          >A commandery-level inspector is sent to survey Liu Bei's county after Liu Bei is appointed as a county prefect as a reward for helping to suppress the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The inspector hints to Liu Bei that he wants a bribe, but Liu Bei does not understand the inspector's point. Later, even after his assistant explains to him, Liu Bei still refuses to bribe the inspector. When the inspector is unable to find any fault with Liu Bei's administration, he attempts to intimidate the locals into making false accusations against Liu Bei. Zhang Fei is furious when he hears about this and he barges into the county office, drags the inspector out, ties him to a post and gives him a severe thrashing. Liu Bei shows up and stops Zhang Fei. When Guan Yu suggests they kill the inspector and seek their fortune elsewhere, Liu Bei refuses, resigns and returns his official seal to the inspector before leaving.
          Historical:
          >Liu Bei was the one who beat up the inspector. The Han central government had issued an imperial edict to dismiss all officials who received their appointments as rewards for their contributions in battle. Liu Bei knew that he was one of such officials. When a commandery-level inspector was sent to the county to formally dismiss him, Liu Bei sought a private meeting with the inspector. However, the inspector claimed that he was ill and refused to meet Liu Bei. An angry Liu Bei then gathered his men, barged into the inspector's quarters, and falsely announced that he had received a secret order from the commandery administrator to arrest the inspector. He tied the inspector to a tree, took out his official seal and hung it on the inspector's neck, and flogged the inspector over 100 times. He wanted to kill the inspector but eventually released him when the latter pleaded for mercy. He went on the run after that.

For a series like DW I think this would be one of the few times where a release character DLC by DLC might actually be the best way to go.
You first take the early part of the 3K story, maybe up to removing Dong Zhuo from power, have only the characters that would be around and adults at that time (so in this case liu bei and his brothers, cao cao and his cousins, Sun Jian and the old veteran guards, Zhang Jiao, etc etc) With these smaller cast you make each of them play differently, flesh out their unique weapons and movesets, develop multiple big and detailed stages and have the campaign be around all of this. Release that on a cheaper price. Now after release if the reception is bad and sales are bad, you cut your losses and stop development. But, if sales are decent and interest is remaining good, then you start work on characters that began their service in the era afterwards and do the same cycle, and repeat until you get to the last year's of the period with the last batch of characters. Because right now it's evident to me that having so many characters now and trying to shoehorn all of them into the campaign that stretches from the yellow turbans to the end of Shu and Wu, it's just causing the deva to half ass everything, giving a bunch of characters cloned movesets, have some characters appear once in campaign and never seen again etc.

it's related to the general political zeitgeist in China, when a new power supplants an older one they praise Cao Cao for being a genius and a reformer (Mao Zedong was a huge Caogay), when a power is safely entrenched they praise Liu Bei and his gang for standing up for the similarly entrenched Han (

Self conservation is a virtue. I'm not opposed to China in principle, the problem are the circumstances. China wants to become the hegemonic power and we're nothing more than pawns for that goal. I understand them but I'm not gonna let them have their way if it's gonna cost me.
Again, traveling to China as a Westerner in 2023 is extremely stupid, do you not agree and if so why? Again, look at what happened to the canadians. The CCP has been spouting anti West propaganda for some time now and the many Chinese have been brainwashed into hating foreigners.

But eventually, empires fall, like the Dutchs, Brits and currently the Mutts. Everyone must adjust to the changing political climate. They brainwash people into not wanting to have families by selling a hedonistic lifestyle and are making it as hard as possible for the average person to afford one. It's not out in the open, everything they do is cleverly disguised, they can claim it's your choice when in reality they made sure all the odds were against you and you had no agency to begin with. Essentialy the end result is the same.
One of the biggest steps to move towards this goal was introducing women in the workplace. Can't raise a family with one salary and if both partners are working. Working for your husband and children is exploitation but working for mr shekelstein is empowerment. Feminism is a tool for subversion.

Keep in mind they don't have to succeed in one generation. If someone manages to have a family in one generation maybe they will get their children. And if they can't get their children then maybe they will get their children's children. Eventually they will get everyone and no one will be able to have a family. The goal is the destruction of the middle class. Only the elite and peasants who rent services from now on.

Like would their Guan Yu's beard be sentient and he'd use it to grip the Green Dragon Crescent Blade with? Would Zhang Fei be some pretty boy? Would Lu Bu be a literal demon?

Love seeing idiots talking shit they know nothing about.
    >is Liu Bei a good guy?
Not entirely but he was indeed quite respectable, that's the reason why so many were willing to follow him even before he had much power.
    >is he incompetent?
If he was, he would not have built his own kingdom from scratch as a nobody, even luck could not carry you that far. Sun Quan inherited one from his dad. Cao Cao was already in the upper class and working for the empire, but he did build his own kingdom as well, just with way more resource.
    >is Cao Cao a bad guy?
He did have bad reputation back then, purging cities was probably his biggest war crime, which is also something Liu Bei never did. People like to compare them both and the truth is Liu Bei was indeed more moral. But both were still passable as warlords and human beings, by the standard of that period of course.
    >how did Shu lose?
Wei had always been the strongest kingdom, even after getting BTFO in Chi Bi, their superiority remained unchallenged. Winning Guan Du was Cao Cao's prime and he deserved that superiority after it. Shu and Wu did have a chance but quite slim, after Liu Bei died, Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei tried but they both had their nemesis at the time, Sima Yi and Deng Ai. Shu and Wu already put up a good fight I would say.

I love games and stories set in other cultures, they're always so mystical and shit. I blame disney for me growing up with Pocahontas, Aladdin, Mulan, and Hercules, as a kid I always loved seeing how other people so far away from me through space or time lived and had their own adventures. But nowadays you can't really do any of that or else its "pandering" and "political". Maybe I was just a kid and thus didn't see any outcry from those movies not being about modern white christian men, but I wish we could go back to a time where games could be set in foreign lands like Prince of Persia and still be critically acclaimed instead of just being called [current political opposition] and shitposted to death. Total War Three Kingdoms was literally my dream come true and politics killed it.

        >Dynasty Warriors has been dogshit since 6
There's no chance Koei will get it together, right?

I thought 6 was the bad one before 9.

          Anonymous

6 was awful. It sucks, because it has a few good ideas (several optional objectives each map, using a special attack to defeat ennemy officers bring more EXP) and the Lu Bu campaign is actually hilarious, but other than that, the system really sucks and once you start exploring the Free Mode you realize most characters are cloned from each other.

          Anonymous

6 homogenized the style into generic anime boys where everybody both looked and played the same, that's why its hated.
          >but everybody was already very anime
So imagine just how hard 6 homogenized stuff that it got that reaction.

          Anonymous

I have a soft spot for 6 because it actually felt like a natural extension to 5 from what I remember when I played it. Combat-wise it's kinda bunk yes and the cloned characters are gay but I don't know it's just the feel of it made sense going from the PS2 games to 6 specifically that is just not present from 7 onwards. Starting from 7 everyone just started shooting out tornadoes and laser beams out of their asses instead of just the mystical strategists and it just came off as bombastic and a bit too crazy.

8 has the best gameplay from Dynasty Warriors due to how much fun everyones movesets became

Not really. They just became more flashy, less responsive and added cutscenes attacks

        Anonymous

8 was when it seemed like they finally got it right with weapons. Everyone had their own moves, the newer characters had extensions to their weapons (Ding Feng's hoop can do extra attacks if you time it right, Yue Jin can cancel combos with a back-lit, Guan Yinping's weights increase potency the longer you spin it), the DLC weapons also followed suit like Sun Quan having a flame sword that gets more powerful the longer he keeps moving and not stop. Instead of scrapping all that in 9 they should had hard that as the foundation and built on it.
And get rid of the weapons swapping for all characters. It has never been a good implementation since all it did was give the characters someone else's weapon but not that characters' EX attacks.

    >Zhuge Liang was an awful strategist
Romance likes to paint him as this mary sue that can do everything besides fight but the truth of the matter was he was an awful strategist but a competent advisor given how awful Liu Bei was at leading. He had to compete with actual brilliant strategists like Jia Xu, Sima Yi, Zhang Liao, Lu Meng and Zhou Yu and Shu was severely lacking in that aspect.
    >Liu Bei was a moron
Out of all the places to live during the kingdoms of Wei, Wu and Shu's lifetime even before they became as big as they did, Liu Beis territories were outright the worst to live in as a peasant because he couldnt manage funds because he grew up as a poorgay. He would shower his generals with money and riches so much his treasury was often empty, ehich in turn led to taxing peasants hard. When Zhuge Liang came to Liu Bei (not the other way around like in Romance) he essentially had to fix a lot of Liu Beis mistakes of mishandling money and resources which persisted beyond his death and troubled his son, Liu Shan.
    >Awful people to work around
Romance really likes to paint Shu's generals as being the best of the best but historically out of the 5 Tiger Generals, only Huang Zhong and Zhao Yun (shockingly) were ever consistently on their A-game. Guan Yu was a piss poor commander and too arrogant, Zhang Fei was an abusive alcoholic who acted more like a bandit and Ma Chao was a bigger traitorous frick than Lu Bu that raped and pillaged his own people harder than Romance Lu Bu, even allowing his father to die due to his own moronic reasoning. By the time Zhuge Liang came in Huang Zhong and Zhao Yun were already out the door in terms of age, he essentially had very little good support to help him out but he at least fixed some of the bigger issues like rewarding Liu Beis friends too much for doing jackshit.

Romance continues to influence peoples way of thinking even now, Guan Yu was a competent and powerful warrior but so were many others, the main focus is how Shu-Han failed and part of it is because Guan Yu was not known to be good at everything that was related to Empire building. He was a soldier that relied on his brute strength and luckily he had a lot of it but he was never good at leading, not a strategist and not even a good administrator.

              Anonymous

Guan Yu was a highly skilled soldier and extremely loyal, but an administrator and a strategist he was not, overall he does share some blame, but it does get overblown since Wu allowed them to have that land in the first place, they got most of it back, then launched a false flag to obtain the rest of it.

Not even shitting on Wu, it's a genius maneuver, Liu Bei was getting too strong and something had to be done, people are just insistent on being tribalistic.

I just think Guan Yu is overrated and will always point out his faults. The territories that Wu had given Liu Bei were actually some of the worst lands to live in at the time. Not to mention the Nanban campaigns werent as successful as people think they were. The territory of Shu-Han was constantly in turmoil and the one praise I will give Zhuge Liang (who I also treat like Guan Yu) is he managed to keep such a dysfunctional land together. But the lands of Shu-Han were not anything to brag about.

Its a cultural thing, whereas a Westerner can look at them in a more objective light and see they had flaws, in China these are people seeped in an oral tradition of being upstanding Confucian ideals and some being seen as deities because their novel counterparts exemplified a set of ideals they themselves historically might not have had anything to do with.

Some examples of overrated and underrated people during the 3K period
    >overrated as frick
Guan Yu (horrible commander and leader)
Zhang Fei (a drunkard and a bandit)
Zhuge Liang (awful strategist and unsuccessful at expansion)
Xiahou Dun (constant jobber, rarely won when he commanded)
Lu Bu (acted like a woman, indecisive and paranoid)
Ma Chao (disgraceful and unsuccessful, led to the death of his people)
Guo Jia (died to heatstroke before showing his worth as a strategist)
    >underrated as frick
Zhang Liao (Cavalry General for Lu Bu, diplomatic genius, defended Hefei on his deathbed as a strategist from Sun Quans main forces)
Cao Ren (initially a moron, decided to read and study to become intelligent, evrntually became a wise and intelligent general with much experience on multiple battlefields)
Lu Meng (the main Wu general who captured The Jing province, also had more victories under his belt than Zhou Yu)
Xu Rong (Dong Zhuos most competent general, beat the Coalition back which was mainly just Cao Cao and Sun Jians forces without breaking much a sweat, almost killed Cao Cao and Sun Jian as well)
Gao Shun (on par with Zhang Liao, was extremely loyal, led The Camp Crushers into many victories against Cao Cao and was smart enough to realize they were going to lose eventually but followed Lu Bu into death due to loyalty)
Jia Xu (romance Zhuge Liang in real life, managed to help a small warlord beat Cao Cao then eventually worked for Cao Cao, all his advice was great, strategical genius and an excellent advisor)
Gongsun Zan (extremely competent as a general, defended China from barbarians, became famed for his white horse riding generals that any white horse would scare people that Gongsun Zan was nearby.)

Xiahou Dun was a fantastic administrator and a loyal friend with that said, not to mention he recruited several important figures early on, he wasn't a god on the battlefield but he deserves respect even if it's not for what you'd think it would be.

If you wanna try the oldschool one, you can go with 3 or 5. You'll probably need an emulator with some upscaling options to make it watchable though.
      Otherwise, 8 is extremely solid.
As for RotK, I only played 10 and 11. 10 was a bit confusing tbh, and I never really tried too hard to be good at it. But 11 is a really solid TBS game and can keep you occupied for some time. No idea how the new ones are, I wasn't hearing the greatest things about 12 back then.

        Anonymous

A few of them have been in the games for a fricking long time, and it's quite a mystery why Koei hasn't made them unique yet.
Cheng Yu is one of Cao Cao's early strategist, I think.
Cao Zhi is one of Cao Cao's son that was in direct concurrence with Cao Pi.
Liao Hua is one of Shu's officers that stayed there for the longest time (though he didn't really do much, it's still better than donut steel OC from RotK fanfiction like the Guan sons or Bao)
Zhu Zhi is also a pretty important Wu general. Similar to Cheng Pu and Dan Heng, he really should have been one of the first Wu general to actually be made unique.

          Anonymous

I disagree with Zhu Zhi because he was pretty important for negotiating and subduing the local Wu tribes and was around forever, but in terms of accomplishments and personality he's very much lower then the other old farts that got in, right now the main reason to put him in would be "well the other oldies are in" and "being the father of Zhu Ran who is in too" which works, but is a tad weaker.

            Anonymous

            If you're

give me Bianshi, Cheng Yu, Liao Hua, Jian Yong, everyone from Wu except Zhu Zhi, Yang Hu, Chen Tai, and Shen Pei. I can elaborate on my answers for yes and no.

, couldn't you say the same exact thing for Liao Hua?
Up to DW7, I'd agree that not all characters deserve to be made unique, but considering Koei is pulling shit from their ass (like how NONE of the main games addition for Shu were good in 7 and 8, and the only saving graces came from characters added in the X-Treme or Empires versions like Xu Shu and Fa Zheng), I'd just rather take these.

              Anonymous

I could, but Liao Hua does have a tad more to work with, since he has the fictional novel stuff of being an ex yellow turban, which they could use for further options regarding what they could do with him, so overall he's just way more flexible with what Koei would do with him, Zhu Zhi can very well get in, but he's not someone I'd care about getting in since I'm not sure what he'd be bringing to the old vet dynamic (hell he could be worse then what they did with Han Dang) and Zhu Ran is rather underused as a character to start with, so unless they decide to apply more focus on Zhu Ran, it might feel like one of those adds that doesn't do much. I will agree that there have been some pretty stinky ads that I disagree with before, but that doesn't change my thoughts overall.

but like the Main Advantage Liao Hua has is that you could have him appear all the time, that is not something that you can say about any other character.

Yeah, that's fair. I actually wish they could expand a little bit on the Yellow Turbans, kinda like they did with Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu. Now obviously, you can't give them too much "good" stuff, but the rest of the Jiao brothers and the characters that started as Yellow Turbans like Xu Huang could make for a somewhat decent campaign.
But yeah, Wu characters are always going to be a problem the more the game progresses with the storyline, since late Wu is such a shitshow.

                Anonymous

Late Wu would be rough because a lot of it is internal politics, and really ugly infighting that is mostly done by factions that revolve around family members fighting eachother.

they have seemed willing to explore that a little bit with various NPC's, they gave Sun Jun and Sun Chen models in one of the DW7E DLC's for example, not to mention Sun Quan and Lianshi's daughter plays a very important role, and since they did put in Dong Bai, they might warm up to the idea of putting in another straight up evil woman in the game.

but I will say if anything, Wu needs more late ads then early ads, Zhuge Jin kinda works as one since he lives long and is related to zhuge liang and zhuge dan, Sun Jian's wife is self explanatory, I am biased towards Zhu Huan because he's an absolute mad lad and the prime example of how trash of a person you could be and still be kept around by Sun Quan, and Xushi's story is just badass. With that said again I'd rather have late Wu character's like Lu Kang and Sun Luban.

So it's just a bunch of lesser known characters with little to no achievements?

Wang Ling would be an interesting add for Wei. Was related to Wang Yun so he would have an early appearance aiding Diao Chan in playing Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo off each other, then defected to Wei and served in their army for quite some time, married Guo Huai's sister, eventually killed with Zhuge Dan's failed rebellion.

I don't know shit about the Three Kingdoms besides playing some Dynasty Warriors at my cousin's place when I was a kid.

Do any of the DW games have Chinese voice acting? I don't think I could get into the series by playing the older games with shitty En*lish VAs going "Cow Cow".

      >I know there's that TV show people keep posting clips from, which one is that and should I watch it?
It's Three Kingdoms from 2010. There's a torrent on nyaa and it's also on youtube, but with a lower quality. Worth watching if you have the time for 95 episodes, 45 minutes each.

Saying this here often does rustle some jimmies, but A LOT of the Musou fanbase are fujos. Thus the hard bishonenification of the characters starting from 6 onwards. With the exception of a few characters (like Dong Zhuo, or the really really old guys like Huang Zhong, and even then, Cheng Pu's pretty sexy), don't expect any unattractive (or even generic-looking) males to pop up.

Well most of the worthwhile literature in the west was written in the span of 200-300 years starting from the 18th century or so. And countries like nipland and kimchiland have way less ancient history than china but are cultural powerhouses these days.

I think China will become great again. Unlike the "west", they're not permanently destroying themselves with dindu mass immigration. East Asian countries are reasonably likely to save themselves by revoking women's rights, which the "west" is absolutely unwilling to do because of their ideology.

        Anonymous

Probably. China's got a long history of becoming great and then falling miserably every couple of centuries. Makes sense they'd keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Industrial and Information Revolutions were too great to assume it will just be cyclical again, though I could be wrong.
I see China following Japan's model of plateauing since they already have the bubble and the demographic troubles.
No idea how the west will turn out though, they're a bit far removed from me.

        Anonymous

Do you think the west is too far gone? I think the foundation of theirs is still pretty damn good and still the best the world has seen, I haven't really seen parallels of the institutions and ideas that "sanctified" (idk if that's the right word to use for the nuance) things like liberty and the importance of the individual in the east. Confucianism just feels so paternalistic and inflexible, and I have to admit I don't really understand Buddhist thought all too well yet, but on the surface it seems way too concerned with transcendence to be effectively immanent (unless you're thinking about based Nichiren).

NTA but going by the pareto principle, as long as at least 20% of the population is willing and able to work hard for the rest of society, it will survive.
The issue is that literally everything is trying to turn people into brainless consumer with no ambitions.
Japan/China/Korea are also consumer countries mind you, but they somehow still manage to work hard since they are famous for having notoriously bad work culture with massive amount of (technically illegal) unpaid overtime work.

          >Do you think the west is too far gone?
Not every western country, but places like France and UK, yeah probably. Their under-20 demographics are like half Africa and Middle East now, and this transformation only took a few decades to happen. They'll be South Africa tier dumpsters pretty soon.

Disagree since it was still good after that if only for more historical storytelling and Reuenthal. It only becomes a slog in the final 5 or maybe 10 episodes where the story just NEEDS Julian to fight Reinhardt. By that point you already knew what was going to happen and all the events felt matter of factly. Especially since Reuenthal was kill so the conflict felt weak.
