It's interesting how DDLC is not really all that similar to Totono, but Totono is still a very good case study on why DDLC is a shitty VN and a failure as a meta commentary.
It fails at metacommentary because it doesn't have anything insightful to say about VNs or the way people consume them, outside of vaguely pointing at harem anime tropes and saying "haha isn't that kind of weird but not too weird please buy Monika figures". It's the worst type of metashit, the type where you can feel the author stroking himself off for being smart enough to point out that fiction is fake.
Hell, let's go outside of VNs for a second for another example. I hate Undertale, I think it's pretentious fricking shit written by a fake as frick hack who took Hussie's writing style and ironed out anything interesting about it, but at the very least it tries to use its meta commentary to make a point about the way people play RPGs and games as a whole. There's an actual point to the Chara shit. In DDLC the meta shit just feels like it was a cynical inclusion to make the game more shocking and appealing among zoomers, it was just trend chasing.
What's worse is that a vast majority of the shit between Sayori dying and Yuri dying are literal creepypasta cliches. Yuri suddenly getting hyper realistic eyes isn't creepy, it's unintentionally hilarious.
I'm still disappointed that the catholic anon who made that rougelike video played the censored version. Would've loved to see his reaction to this or the slurp
