Actually they're supposed to be made of fibrous cartilage as opposed to elastic cartilage supporting human ears. Otherwise they would droop down under their mass like dog ears. Fibrous cartilage isn't very elastic and can easily lead to significant discomfort, chafing or injuries when compressed against a helmet.

I mean, elves in my setting don't have super long bunny ears, not that you couldn't strap a helmet on a bunny but even those two things notwithstanding, discomfort could be a good reason that elves generally eschew heavy armor.

Technically he's not wrong that FFXIV fell flat on its face. 1.0 was a disaster. The cutscenes were pretty good and obviously the setting and writing were strong, but they were totally unprepared for making an ONLINE game and their engine ran like shit as a result.
This is why the ended 1.0 with the protagonists FAILING to stop the grand apocalypse the plot was building towards, they took some time off to rework things and brought back the game as A Realm Reborn, picking the plot back up 5 years after that time someone dropped the moon on us and a fucking dragon popped out of it to make the days worse for everyone than it already was.

Sot FFXIV did fall flat on its face. The part he left out is that it got back up, wiped the blood from its nose, and won the race anyway.

Seriously? I like XIV and even I know its a clone at its core, like what XI was to EQ. SMN on ARR release even lifted Warlock's moves wholesale, right down to identical levels learned, and it took several years to even wean away from that. One of the game's biggest strengths/faults is that its a kitchen sink mash-up of random references people like from other games even beyond FF, in a franchise of already generic stuff pulled together. even half the mobs are ripped directly from other FFs

chainmail sockets seem like a really bad way to solve this problem. forged pieces riveted in place or protrusions cast directly as a part of the helmet, both rounded off and attached directly along the sides to not become like horns (unlike pic related) are probably the best way to solve it. Size of protrusions would obviously depend on the size and angle of the ears. Or simply have a design of helmet that doesn't cover the ears

To be fair, the ear size and placement for Elezen doesn't really leave any GOOD options for ear protection. They stick out perpendicular to the rest of the head. Plated 'sock' is kind of the best you can hope for under the circumstances, and if you are an Elezen warrior you'll be happy to have it.

For the vast majority of time, people did not spend fighting fulling enclosed in armor. While costs and available materials/technologies also played a factor, there is also the fact that being fully armored comes with disadvantages. Not covering your ears can more advantageous for elves, especially since ears might not even be the main region of their body targeted by enemy attacks. Same reason why some soldiers might prefer not having their vision blocked off by their helmet. While having your eyes gouged out hurts, it's a very small risk to actually happen and being able to clearly see everything could simply be a lot more advantageous.

Maybe the ears give them a vital advantage in battle. Maybe they allow the elves to hear the communication of enemy soldiers and the orders of their officers from miles away. Maybe the elves can use their movement to communicate without talking or facing each other, which is incredibly useful in a battle.

The way that those helmets are designed basically any kind of blow to the head is going to leave their ears sheared off or pulped against the side of the helmet.

Armor is rarely intended to bring a blow to a dead stop head on, you'd much rather deflect a blow and have it slide or bounce off harmlessly. but with the ears both exposed and sticking out like that, any kind of glancing blow is going to catch on the ears, and ears are not known for their sturdiness.

Even if the helmet protects the head from any further harm, you're going to end up with a lot of one-eared, or even earless, elves.

Normally they just wear things that don't bother the ears, but for elven warriors who might wear full helmets, they ritually remove their ears when their training is complete. It forever marks them as a soldier for life, and in elven society is looked upon both with pity, but also great veneration, symbolically taking one's first wound in war so all may be free.

Elves don't wear helmets. If elves are dedicated warriors they survive based off their enhanced senses and helmets interfere with that. Unlike more sensible races they have too much pride to conceal their faces, as well. More often they are simply not armored warriors, though. That's human and dwarf turf and that's absolutely reprehensible to elvenkind, so the few that take that approach to combat are seen as lesser.
They're like Hollywood actors that can't go five minutes without someone seeing their face, high off their own nonexistent (outside of other elves and people who have fallen to elven propaganda) hype.
Dwarves at least cover their noggin but they wear open-faced helmets to make sure everyone knows THIS beard is connected to MY face.

      Anonymous

Stop trying to make elves terminally stupid so you can have an advantage over them. Its embarrassingly cringe.

Elves know how armor works. They were the ones that taught the humans and dwarves how to make it in the first place. There's a reason why, in The Hobbit, when a group of dwarves find a cache of elven weapons they IMMEDIATELY ditch their dwarven gear for elf-made stuff. They know its better and are not going to pass up that kind of advantage.

Many helmets used by humans in the real world didn't cover the ears. The Roman galea, for one. I also find it very fitting for elves to take on a more classical style than humans in a medieval fantasy setting, given their long lives and their tendency towards tradition.

    >Not wearing a specifically crafted helmet designed to allow for ear movement, articulation, and hearing, while providing protection against cuts or strikes.
This lack of initiative or foresight into such a basic conundrum, is why you are a Dwarf, and not an Elf.

Severely limits ear movement, which is stressful for elves. Imagine wearing a Ludovico Technique helmet into battle.

you realize that the helmets worn by modern day armed forces do not cover the ears, right?

Humans have ears that don't stick out much. Long ears are a much bigger target with a slashing weapon than with a projectile weapon. I mean, try cutting a tree branch with a bullet.

In my worldbuilding, most female elves use hijab/headscarves which keep the ears against the head. Males or females of especially high status sometimes use ear cuffs, with their ears being put in an ear sock and rolled up into a cinnamon roll shape, and a decorative metal cuff going over that.
