This game feels so overwhelming, there's no tutorial and I'm just so lost. How do I know if I'm playing right? I die so fast and I don't understand the crafting system very well.

Am I SUPPOSE to be googling how to play this game? I really don't want to look up guides, I just want to know if I'm missing something, or if this game really is just THAT confusing.

if you need to use a wiki to get through a game or get any enjoyment out of a game, either the game is badly designed or you are moronic.
that's what OP is trying to figure out
using the wiki is the easiest, but there are in-game sources that exist, you can use the guide npc for crafting recipes and there's a bestiary that tells you what items each enemy drops ect
it's definitely a wiki game but the guide is there to give some general tips and you can get away with pretty much just exploring on your own accord and the game will naturally let things happen to you

That being said one of the first things you should do is build some houses (houses have specific requirements) and then start mining underground for iron/silver/gold to get armor/better weapons - don't make armor/weapons from iron tho, iron is more useful for other things
Also look for red heart crystals, using them (right click them in the inventory) gives you more max health
General progression for the first boss is:
At night kill the flying eyes, might be best to use a bow
After you get six lenses travel right or left until you either get to a bloody looking area (crimson) or purplish area with a lot of big drops (corruption) and you are looking for an altar, it's a crafting station lets you craft the boss summon item, use it at night (anywhere)
wooden plaforms in the air are your friend and so is a bow for the boss
the end goal is to go into space and fight the moon lord. I usually just pillar up with wood and get lategame loot fast

this game made sense when i first played it 10 years ago, and then played every individual update afterwards
i watched my friend play it for the first time and he got totally overwhelmed. there's so much shit now.
Talk to the guide
Literally just dig down and if something says "material" have the Guide show you what you can craft with it. Eventually things will happen, no wiki required.
