you can download the installer for the game from various places, and use any old CD Key you find online, and what you do is edit the gateway ini file or registry entry whatever; and you add in the ip for a private server. in-game you select that gateway and set it as your default, and you play the game.
there's also a really good plugin for singleplayer if that is more your jam, it's called PlugY, it gives you multiplayer features and functionality, but in your solo games alone by yourself. there's exclusive content for multiplayer you see.

it's not just for D2 even, you can play D1 if you use it as your gateway, remember. i am sure other old school battlenet games will work too.
It's very easy to download a working copy of vanilla d2 and start playing. You can probably google version 1.14 and find a portable copy that doesn't even require installation. You can use dgvoodoo2 to get nice full screen graphics with glide if you want.

Find a copy at Goodwill and register the CD key with Blizzard, then you have digital copies with modern installers, etc, and the original CD copy for retro rigs.
I don't think you can get the classic installers anymore from blizzard.

in singleplayer Diablo 1 the state of your game world is permanent and you can toss items on the ground to store them, lol.
there's a mod or source port that gives you a shared stash between all your characters though. vanilla the worlds are tied to each 1 character.

You can still buy vanilla D2 and LoD digitally on Blizzard's website. Alternatively, you could just buy a used copy on ebay, where you'll have two options;
