At least Sniper plays the game. Engineer just sets up his buildings and they play the game for him. Being boring is literally a characteristic of Engineer too

Yeah you can do that, but you could also just play Scout who is literally a straight upgrade to Engineer.

That's why you run a battle engi either with mini-sentry or go aggressive with Jag. Run into an enemy, plop down a sentry and just keep shotgunning as a budget scout: the enemies are forced to divide their attention between you and your sentry before it goes online. If you're using mini-sentry then you can do it twice from full metal.
The main purpose of engi is to plop down a teleporter anyways, which is done with a click of a button. When you spawn put down a tele, put down exit in the front lines and then just start fighting. If you died and your lvl1 tele is still functional then just upgrade it to lvl3 through your entrance near spawn and get back into the fray.
pub engies are generally morons
they just set up their buildings and frick off. you almost never see one competent enough to rotate a teleporter exit

If you're camping, it's the most boring class to play. They way to play him is by running into the enemy base and fricking around.
It's immensely fun doing this because most don't expect it. Plus you can get gud with headshotting this way.

Heavy (outside of memes) has like 1 way to play him. For all the dopamine fragging in a pub with 3 doms gets you, showing up to the front line and going brrrrrrrrrr for the millionth time gets old fast imo

I personally love to play huntsman carbine bushwacka sniper, bodyshotting people with huntsman and the plinking them dead with the carbine is always amusing, and getting mini crit arrows that let you oneshot light classes and even medics (162!) is even better.
