Actually you can't. Boss triggers a 5-10 second shield every time you bomb which I distinctly remember because my stupid ass had auto-bomb turned on. Took so fricking long to kill him I never played the game ever again.
You aren't, Cave TLB's are mostly just a resource check full of impossible bullshit to force you to bring a whole run's worth of bombs and lives to the end for it to actually be possible. Ketsui is the exception to that and it's one of many reasons why people actually like Ketsui
Actually giving studios a budget would help. Gradius V on the PS2 was probably the last shmup that had even a modicum of money behind it, it looked, sounded and played great.
You have a tiny "hit box" in those games. So the bullets can actually hit your ship and you won't die, as long as they don't hit the pixels in the center.
Cave kinda ruined the genre with nonsense like screen filling waves of bullets and waifu fan service.
As one anon said, the ship hitboxes are small. The hitbox is only where the rider of the beetle sits. The plane of the bullets is actually above the beetle, more in line with the rider's head and torso. If you look at OPs screenshot you can see that they're passing over the beetle "ship"
You have to bomb and due in specific ways while moving in a certain pattern to move the bullet pattern offscreen so you can actually dodge for like 10 seconds. If you do this with with max lifes and bombs you barely win. It's moronic.
Literally 99.99% of the bullets on that screen don't matter and the game would be better if they were removed altogether. They're not even arranged in any visually interesting pattern, literally filler for filler's sake.

UT/DR have braindead easy gameplay with like, 3 or 4 exceptions. They'd be good if they were willing to challenge you like real schmups do. Also >Mozart tier music
Frick off with that shit. Shmups have great music. Toby's is no better.
your shitty genre by adding actual compassionate characters
Doesn't need it. >Mozart-tier music
Play Radiant Silvergun, Gradius V, and Ikaruga.
and great mixture of RPG gameplay into it.
Radiant Silvergun.
>compassionate characters
there is nothing "compassionate" about them. Maybe for a r*dditor's first video game it's impressive, but then you've just got a bad case of pic related.
Bring back the euroshmup, frick it make a persona clone with shooting game on it, some kawaii voice actinge, don't make it too hard just pretend it's hard like it's dark souls 2 marketing give it some cliffhanger so the kids get to make youtube videos about the lore
>Compassionate characters >The only character people remember is the fat Skeleton who wait to kill the genocidal maniac after he has killed vast majority of the population, all because he wanted pussy from someone who was dead
too bad they dont port to pc
the point of these ports is to release the game on an modern platform but it will be a never ending issue because they dont release their ports on pc and newer consoles will keep launching with time
LiveWire just ported the 360 version, like all their other Cave ports, and Akai Katana and Deathsmiles from City Connection. M2 didn't even handle the original Mushihimesama 360 Cave port, it was Futari.
Make it clear to the zoomers that you haven't beat the game if you ever use more than 1 credits.
Also bullet hell drives people away so clearly shmup devs should move away from them. A mix of lot of bullets patterns with interesting level and encounter design + interesting weapons is simply the best way and that's why games that did this tends to stick around even decades laters when the later Cave slop never really did.
Literally start from Gradius and add more fun weapon types as well as diverse stages. Maybe remove the ridiculous checkpoint system (which they admittedly did in Gradius V) so your run isn't massively fricked if you died in a very bad spot... then work on the bosses because honestly these games don't have very good boss encounters.
the spirit of shmups has always been using many, many credits to clear the game. players who clear shmups on one credit are something like 1.00% of the audience.
that being said, I still respect those players. However, you probably cannot even press button like takahashi meijin-- only I get to have opinion on this, your opinion is discarded into trash.
Don't care honestly. I firmly believe shmups actually start being fun when you actually TRY to 1CC. And sure, maybe 2 or 3 or 4 credits if only to learn the game more quickly, but any more and at one point you no longer start giving a shit about the very things that makes shmup fun because you're basically invincible if you credit feed forever. You're missing the actual game entirely if you credit and bomb your way out of anything even remortly interesting that the game throws at you.
So, disagreed.
>and that's why games that did this tends to stick around even decades laters when the later Cave slop never really did.
What the frick are you talking about anon? CAVE shooters are still the most popular games in the genre.
The most popular among a core niche of shmup fans. That's not the same as actual popularity. The most popular shmup is ikaruga anyway, not anything from Cave.
Ikaruga's popularity is mostly because it was way ahead of the drag curve by having a world wide release (very important) on Xbox Live Arcade. The game's gameplay mechanics have always been divisive.
the spirit of shmups has always been using many, many credits to clear the game. players who clear shmups on one credit are something like 1.00% of the audience.
that being said, I still respect those players. However, you probably cannot even press button like takahashi meijin-- only I get to have opinion on this, your opinion is discarded into trash.
You're absolutely wrong, the soul of shmups, and arcade games has always been to go as far as you can with one credit.
Arcade culture in japan has always been like that, you play one game, go as far as you can and leave the spot for someone else, credit dumping is not something anyone does outside of children fleecing their moms.
>and that's why games that did this tends to stick around even decades laters when the later Cave slop never really did.

>Big cope.
Project harder. Barely any "touhou fans" actually play touhou.

This has been proven wrong time and time again with polls. Cave games are garbage and the reason why shmups all have the reputation of being nothing but danmaku vomit.

No it's from polls where they asked a number of 2hu fans if they had done a 1CC before and over 50% said yes. Cave is irrelevant for a reason.

Cave dug their own grave by making their games largely inaccessible until it was too late. What the frick are you gonna do in 2009 when this genre was seeing something of a resurgence? Grab Imperishable Night easily off the internet or go through a load of hoops to play Mushihimesama Futari on a 360?
too bad they dont port to pc
the point of these ports is to release the game on an modern platform but it will be a never ending issue because they dont release their ports on pc and newer consoles will keep launching with time
For better or worse M2 are autistic about accuracy so you're never going to see their games on a platform with so many hardware variables. At least you can emulate anything they put on Switch.

Review count is not a reasonable metric for anything
Credit feeding good
1cc also good.
If you try to do only the latter you will be frustrated more often than not, but if you stick to the former then you will not appreciate the challenge. I believe 1cc is the natural conclusion for people who like the genre and you might even go as far as No Bomb or No Miss if you genuinely love the game enough - but do start from credit feeding.
>No Bomb or No Miss if you genuinely love the game enough
Assuming you aren't playing the most bullshit CAVE games where the TLB is nearly impossible NoBomb/NoMiss

I don't play shmups at all but I do have this game and einhander on my ps1. Both amazingly fun and beautiful games. For casuals like me the genre needs a couple titles that are less bullet-hell and more branching paths/optional tasks to encourage replayability. Of course you can try to 1cc these too, but it's probably less of a challenge than the crazy bullethell games.
Kinda what I liked about at least the early levels of einhander was that with the different equippable weapons and it not being too bullet-hell style felt like you could play the game by just playing the game and do somewhat well, but idk how to explain what I mean by this
Yeah everyone's played it and it's great sure, not too hard either. Even has the branching paths. And it was popular/sold well right? So why weren't sequels made just like it? Nintendo dropped the ball and made some fricking RPG instead. I guess we had a shortlived casual shmup era and apparently the game companies didn't think it was worth it to continue the trend.
Kinda what I liked about at least the early levels of einhander was that with the different equippable weapons and it not being too bullet-hell style felt like you could play the game by just playing the game and do somewhat well, but idk how to explain what I mean by this
coolest thing in einhander to me was the optional tasks and branching paths within the mission, always blew my mind when I found a new one.
Eh yeah I played it when it came out and it was fun enough, but it's not the sequel to starfox 64 I was hoping for. In the previous gen I only had a ps1 so I could only play SF64 at my friend's house. During the GCN era I was excited for the next starfox game that I could actually own this time, and was let down.

I didn't have star fox, a rumble pak, or a memory card but I still liked adventures. The little shooter sections are really good.
Just make Einhander or Star Fox/ That it.
Assault had worse flying segments. Didn't they do the Rogue Squadron 3 thing with on foot parts?
I got so much frickin' mileage out of the demo disc
the first stage
between the branching paths, the fact that you could choose gunpods on reruns
you can get the juno, the riot, and I can't remember if you could get a third weapon in the first level or not but finding them gave it a lot of replay value

Hell yeah I had the very same demo disc. Played the shit out of it then was lucky enough to get the game later.
>I don't play shmups at all >but I play G-Darius and Einhander
where did this notion that only danmaku count as shmups anymore
in some ways darius games on their harder paths are harder than first loops of the average CAVE game because it requires different skill/memo
danmaku necessarily being harder is a fallacy i hope we get rid of, in some ways they're more fair especially once you learn a particular game's scoring mechanics and you can stock up on resources which older arcade games can be much more stingy about. also your ship's hurtbox is smaller.
anyway here's some shmups you might like, maybe some of you want to wishlist them for the incoming shmup sale

one of the most underrated games of all time, it's bullet hell but it's castle of shikigami in its most approachable form. there's a subgenre of danmaku that encourage you to "graze" bullets for score and powerups and you can get a very good taste for that here.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1884300/Deathsmiles_III/
bullet hell by the notorious CAVE but trust me it's very fair. for deathsmiles 1 play MBL, pick difficulty level 1 for all stages and skip the extra stages, then you only have to worry about the last stage, and hopefully you'll see it's not that different from routing G-Darius.
This is all very cool of you, thanks. I think the notion of bullethell being the only true shmups just comes from some of the autistic gatekeeping that inevitably happens in a niche genre like this. Being a roguelike fan I've learned to respect the autism of other genres
That's fair, R-Type is the original "puzzle game as a shmup." You get some powerups and keep going until you eventually die and then you need to figure out how to play from the checkpoint well enough to repeat the cycle. Definitely not like the modern shmup that doesn't use checkpoints.
And actually you reminded me of another horizontal shmup.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1975360/DRAINUS/
Here's one by Team Ladybug who did Touhou Luna Nights. It also has a story mode and the main feature is customizing your ship midrun. Well, also the drain bullets thing, too. If anything I'm kind of sad this didn't make more of a splash. This is probably the most consumer-friendly (not just for arcade diehards) modern shmup on the market. On sale now too.
Yes
DRAINUS I'd say caught the right people, but it's legit a touch -too- easy for what it is after you clear stage 2 regardless of difficulty. It's for sure the type of game where Stage 1&2 is the hardest it gets because by the 2nd loop you've got so many tools you just trivialize what's in front of you.
Gradius or Raiden. Everything else is some ugly trash. Honorary mention to Starfox and Darius, as they're just half-bad instead of completely disgusting.
We talking snes arwing or N64 arwing. The r-9 just feels too gimped compared to the other r fighters for me to to pick it outright, but I'd take it over snes arwing
Looking back at it, I do remember there were some old set of shmups seem to be good, so outside of Aleste and Star Soldier, which other sorts of old shmup collections are good?
Also gets me to think if it wasn't for Puyo Puyo causing their initial financial problems if Compile would've continued making shmups. Hudson Soft's issues I don't know too much about
Apparently, Puyo Puyo's success was something that Compile was heavily banking on to the point of trying to make a theme park out of it, that apparently had so much expenses that it resulted in a bankruptcy.
Hudson was completely fine they just merged with Konami. Junkie has a video about it.
Oh, then in that case it's just a pity to not see more done with Star Soldier outside of that one Bomberman reference nowadays especially considering how their most recent game was just caravan-mode only, hell Konami should do more with the shmup IPs they got.
In Caladrius Blaze the girl you're playing loses some clothing when she gets hit, I believe that was a step on the right direction and wish Mushi had a similar feature.

Einhander and Dodonpachi Daifukatsu. Don’t listen to the anon that shat on Daifukatsu, it was the game that properly got me into shmup a and it’s great fun.
>shumps games with god tier soundtracks
You've got a lot of games to pick from. More often than not, this particular genre fires on all cylinders when it comes to the soundtrack.
Controversial oppion im sure, but ditch lives in the traditional sense of starting a level over again and just have a life meter. Likewise, those shmoops that feature suicide bomb options where your bomb stock essentially works as health is a fun idea and really makes you take risks and is fun having them drop and bounce around the stage as you desperately try to grab em.
People forget that gamers originally played hardcore games like shmups for softcore pornography. Now with porn being plentiful there is no reason for shmups. There is no fixing it and no need to fix it. Just get rid of them.
Whenever I try to play Cho Ren Sha (Windows) the music is noticeably slowed down and doesn't match the pace of the gameplay. I tried every compatibility mode and nothing changes. Any idea how to fix it?
Arcade mode either already being solved, or doing offline local learning you need to clear it like some 3000+ times to get everything.
The 'campaign' for real testing your endurance and how well you think you know how to play shumps with it's challenge/limited loadout stages.
Free mode chances are where you actually end up playing 90% of the time given you can use any of the DLC ships for it.
Also dual screen support being fricking livid.
i have rez, r-type final, and gradius v for ps2. i kept those specifically because 1. i was able to and 2. they represent a part of my life i enjoyed with friends
Pic related is what I own physically. It's a modest collection and some I've had since I was a kid.
Digital: >Ikaruga >Raystorm HD Collection >Deathsmiles 1 and 2 >Raiden III & IV
You either have the crippling autism required to repeat the same actions over and over again to commit the games to memory or you don't play shmups.
By dumbing them down and making them more accessible the normalniggoids will just call them "only 20 minutes long" and b***h about how they aren't open world or some shit. The core audience will be buttfrustrated they're so boring and easy.
by the way anon since you know elevator action returns a game will come out one day with the initials M N and it is heavily inspired by elevator action returns even though it's very different as well

I don't want to say too much because i'm in rudimentary stages and I think if this game comes out it will take 5-6 years but it is kind of like elevator action returns with some various elements that vary the gameplay, some roguelite-type features but moreso about picking up things you can equip for your next run rather than powering up in the middle of a run
it will also feature a CQC system inspired by The Boss(tm)

no it's not really meta progression, it's meta sideways progression i guess? about unlocking different rather than better things.
there will be some upgrades, but the game also features the concept of a "power shop" which is an important shop that you can't buy certain things from if the game judges you to be too powerful. encourages a balancing act.
the goal is the tight design of 16/32 bit era games.
the city connection port is good though, your best bet would be waiting for hamster but there's really no point. there's basically no difference other than the saturn version by ving adding an extra digit to the score so you can't counter stop it.
If you could figure out how to make enemies have a bit more advanced AI in a shmup instead of just using scripted fights and tracking bullets, it might have a better balance of "randomness" and "memorization".
Square should still hold the copyright and they've been happily letting Live Wire do the CAVE ports. Is there a dev group with a good track record for PS1 ports/remasters/upscales? That would be your best bet.
Yeah the superboss of the gummi ship areas is Schwarzgeist from Einhander, not only that but the music that plays during the fight and its attack patterns are all based on Einhander too
There's also a gummi ship you can unlock that is based on Endymion
I remember a game that I coulda swore was a vertical scrolling shmup
the only thing I remember about it was that the playable characters were like, people using magic rather than ships
I think one of the characters was a girl using a staff and flying on a cloud and the only reason I remember this is because of that character's boob jiggle on the attract screen animation
I was 7 and saw this as an arcade cabinet in some small town shop in italy and i've never been able to find out what this game was
does anyone know anything, this had to have been between 1996 - 1998
huh, I tried a similar search plenty and it never came up
cool thanks
Gunbird is pretty popular and well known. I remember playing Gunbird 2 on my Dreamcast, and I have the old Mobile Light Force (the NA localization) on Steam.
It's okay.
It's an older style shmup, so gun power-ups that scatter and get lost upon death. Sort of Raiden-style. The big deal is that it looks nice, having the Capcom polish, and your different characters have different attack patterns. Nothing too exceptional these days, although much more impressive back then.
The version of Mobile Light Force on Steam was an awful port, but you can't get that anymore anyway. Steam now has Gunbird and Gunbird 2.
Owning the OG GC and then getting GM, it really just felt like more of the same with a few tweaks on how things played out. I'll admit though the unlock ships feel far more unique now then they did before.
I like Musicbrainz because it lets you tag music with an autistic amount of detail, down to the point of even labeling songs based on their original works.
>Monolith
i hate its dashing system >dash left/right >the character dashes left/right >dash up/down >the character dashes forward/backward instead
why, just make him dash up and down
remove credit feeding but also remove 1ccs, it's a stupid dichotomy, also make 'scoring' aka playing well in a specific way diagetic instead of a number
Making shmups about score would be really interesting. These days people also like build variety, because it fosters different playstyles. Ok hear me out:
>game is based on getting as high a score as possible >leaderboards posted online ofc >can invest in skill trees during a run to change your playstyle >"skills" don't really upgrade your ship but instead boost your score accrual for certain actions >ie bonus score for hitting enemy weakspots or consecutive shots without missing >even weird shit like bonus points for time spent in certain areas of the screen (low flying bonus!) >use different ship skill styles to boost your score as much as possible
I feel like this would be the most fun in a 2.5D game like einhander or star fox, really opens things up.
I got recommended to try Batsugun last shmup thread because I liked Cho Ren Sha.
I can definitely say without a shadow of a doubt now that I do not like shmups. I only like Cho Ren Sha.
Thanks for reading.
lmao did they recommend vanilla Batsugun or Special?
try something like Eschatos or Judgement Silversword/Cardinal Sins
those are much more in the vein of CRS
my next recommendations after that would be SITER SKAIN games, particularly Kamui or RefleX. these are actually on sale right now too and you can always just refund them
I wish we can do a score battle on any STGs with other shmup nerds. Not sure how it would work out.

nobody outside of students and neets has the time and energy to focus on a 20-40 minute game where a slight mess up can be extremely punishing. in an arcade setting, you'd have to wait that long if someone else is playing. score runs in some touhou games can easily go over an hour
i think something like the avoidance genre in iwbtg fangames would be more accessible. each game is one boss that only lasts the length of a song, and the main goal is to not get hit. the only issue is you usually aren't "shooting" anything
i wanna be the music 2 does this idea decently well for an arcade-like experience
Innovate. One thing I've been thinking of is having bullets on separate planes with a mechanic where you have to shift between said planes to avoid specific patterns.

I just don't get it.
They did say an Armed Police Batrider port is in the works, but that they ordered the composer to redo some of the tracks first because some original songs are dangerously close to being considered plagiarism
I haven't really been following the thread, but thanks to everyone who posted links to games.
And to anyone who plays just one or two games, just stick with what you enjoy. It's a genre that's meant to be played however you like.
Just finished up a playthru of Crimzon Clover myself.
I don't really play enough to have a favorite, although I think that Type-II (the one that trails its options behind it) is a lot of fun. It just gives you more varied attack patterns than the others.
CC -> WI it got a general damage nerf as it takes longer to clear things then it used to (Sky's big ships near the start are a perfect example of what I mean where you could easily nuke them before they'd even start firing in the Doujin release, but WI you both clear less and have to deal with their fire clogging the screen more with the same routing)
WI -> WEX nerfed the options on bosses, selectively in moving them to be directly in/on top of breakable hitzones to clear them faster (Stage 2's spider boss' legs now take forever to fricking clear with Type-II as a result.)
Stage 3's flower spam and Stage 4's deep cloud thunder segment both ensure I cannot 1cc Arcade successfully even if the rest of it isn't that bad (even the EX boss is a lot easier then beating stage 3 without dying). If lives weren't as strict/limited I might have edged one, but as it stands it's just beyond me currently. One day though.
We need a cinematic shmup. Like God of war. Use the old game Viewpoint, or 3d Mario world as your model, isometric, cartoony and chunky. Each level would feature multiple levels, or planes (not vehicles) to switch between. While the game maintains a 2d shooter mechanic, the camera ought to be incredibly dynamic and set up differently for different set pieces or action moments you want to produce. Go God of War style and have Enemy kill animations after weakening them for a flashy finish. Then go blaster master having to defend yourself with a smaller dude until you repair your ship. The camera zooming in to your guy. The game should show scale and make you feel smaller than the ship.in this sequence.
Ether Vapor and Astebreed already play around with this a lot I have to say, if anything both games get held back more via production values then attempts to be cinematic.
>Stage 3's flower spam
you just stream towards them and restream when they're gone >Stage 4's deep cloud thunder segment
the one with those laser things that form polygons? iirc the hexagon phase has a safespot somewhere while the rest aren't too dense
but in any case you can still bomb when things get bad

I couldn't say myself in earnest, if anything still waiting on more from Qute myself as while not as cinematic, they still clearly took pages from edlweiss playbook with Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles.
>How do we fix shmups?
I'm shilling my game every thread, but this time I'll just talk about my design fixes: >danmaku style movement, focus button that makes you slow and shows your little hitbox >health system, with bombs that consume health (using a bomb is always better than getting hit because you lose half life) >megaman style levels, no autoscrolling >no 'finish in one' sitting kind of experience >fixed amount of lives at mission start, if you get to zero you lose your checkpoints and need to restart the mission >permanent power ups you can change on the fly to adapt
Make them easier to get into, and make additional hard modes that are fricking hard. The score system is only for the top 10 players, everyone else doesn't give a single frick so stop designing the game around score. Touhou is bigger than the entire genre and that is the reason, you can just go and play 'em. And even getting into touhou games is kind of hard.
There's nothing wrong with them, OP pic is a bait image, most games don't look even remotely like this outside of something like a 2nd loop secret boss or similar which only handful of people will get to with abusing cheats
It's alright, janky and really ugly but I like the huge amount of attacks you can use instead of having the usual shot + bomb and maybe some subweapon and hyper. It's certainly a Platinum take on the genre for better and for worse.
Now this is a quality shitpost. I do like Monolith though. And Starward Rogue, though I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one in the thread who's even heard of it.
'fun but kinda jank' is Arcen's wheelhouse. Most of their games aren't shmups, though, so aside from Starward Rogue and maybe The Last Federation if you squint, they aren't particularly thread-relevant.
Send Zun bankrupt. Litigate him with hardcore anti-pedophilia laws. Several times in several nations clocking up a few centuries of down time. Then you send him to the deepest, dankest prison rape pit in Turkey and throw away the key. That would at least send a message. This one creep has turned an entire fun genre into a shit shower. See, the dark secret of 2Hu is that the vast majority of the fans are just there for the pedo imagery and have never played the games.
So until then, we have to suffer through the dark ages of shmups.
Even if ZUN never existed all the current touhou fans would still not touch the genre.
The only thing that MIGHT have changed is the fangames turning into unique standalone titles but i'm not sure the people who made fangames would've been interested if it wasn't for the existence of the series.
Oh yeah it's his fault that the genre's dead as shit and not the fact that the games are too old and punishing for the average gamer to even attempt it. 2hu waifugays barely even play the games anyways. It's all a big meme, they wouldn't touch the games at all if it weren't because that's where their waifus come from.
The fact is, Touhou is popular despite being a SHMUP, not because of it. It's not leeching off the genre, it's carrying it's whole corpse.
Zun is genuinely a great dev and even if you hate touhou you have to respect him. He does everything a good indie dev should do. He doesn't enforce his copyright and just lets his fans do whatever he wants, makes the games he wants to play and outright says he would just keep making them even if no one bought them because he just makes them for himself, actively brings in prominent fans/circles to help make the spinoff games and absolutely sticks to keeping it what he wants it to be, keeping it in a genre without mass appeal and doing all art, music etc by himself because that's what he wants it to be.
He's a great indie dev, one of the best and few who deserves what he got. And honestly if he wasn't like that Touhou would probably have never taken off. When if you absolutely hate touhou and everything around it I don't see how you can hate Zun.
>makes the games he wants to play
kek
Nobody want to play garbage like TD and any of the new games (16 - 18, HBM and the new """phantasmagoria""") >outright says he would just keep making them even if no one bought them because he just makes them for himself
No, he's 100% doing it for personal gains at this point. He could had delayed his shitty games to fix it but still put it out >And honestly if he wasn't like that Touhou would probably have never taken off.
lol
lmao even
I would enjoy this more if the entire Dan weapon usage system wasn't so jank at times. Otherwise legit creative and fricking fun ass shooter that both routes are worth playing.
I don't see how those games looks related but I trust you anon, picked up. I do also like GRev's work anyway. I heard of this before but never knew it was on PC too.
I got 4 new shmups to try out of this thread, maybe more because I ignored Darius and maybe I shouldn't have.
Quite impressed to see Radiant out of nowhere, I was enjoying it a lot on Saturn emulation but the input lag made it harder than it should be so I'll buy it on PC for sure
the usual /vg/ tards who shit shmup threads up here were still asleep while this thread was active, so thankfully we could have a good one
- Patterns are not a stupid maze
- Faster, harder to dodge bullets
- Don't die in 1 hit, instead, it's about dodging as many things as possible on average.
- Charged shots and separate air/ground weapons to increase the skill ceiling of offense (most bullet hell shooting mechanics are extremely boring).
>Euroshump
Jets'n'Guns is legit the best one of the pack, look into it at some point if you haven't already.
What's so jank about it? An EXP system for weapons that purely governs score bonuses instead of shot power seems simple enough
Weapons either level up so fast that you use them for all of 5 seconds and then hit 10 Dan and now feels like a total waste to use it ever again (even if it's extremely good) or they take fricking forever to even get to 2 Dan and you're stuck with a crappy gun till it's solved (GOD DAMN FRICKING REFLECT I HATE YOUR FRICKING GUTS AHHHH), and if not for stock being 1mil each, it would be somewhat ignoble, but you legit play for score to play to clear as legit it's really easy at times to just get clipped by a sudden popshot, including doing the escort/destroy missions with everything shooting the second it gets on screen.
Reflect is really good at taking out popcorn (especially for the escort missions) if you know how to position yourself, plus you can combine it with Side and position yourself horizontally next to high-HP targets to decimate them
I'd 100% rather be using Direction then Reflect 9/10 times, including for it's low ass damage output. But this is legit a personal gripe as playing on Hard is the only 'real' way to play, and as such you kinda want (and I myself need) every little edge you can squeeze out. At least it's music is far worth the admission price and practice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFeZE5NOiDY
I have only played tuhu but I had fun with it. In the end the only bullets that matter are the ones right next to you and all of the rest are shiny fireworks to make it look more impressive
>includes ridiculous timeout phases in what's probably the easiest EX stage in the series >bullets so fast that the only confirmed human clears are with slow mode hacks >never does it again
I know some cave shmups had some anticheese patterns but still, what the frick was ZUN smoking?
>I remember hating Varstray.
I respect it. The game is hard and can be frustrating. Imagine thinking a full run should consist of 2 loops of 12 stages. What they were thinking?
I do like the characters/music/"story" (despite the broken english translation) and I respect the animated bits for the story.
>abandonware
The game has some "bugged" achievements that reference a gamemode and difficulty that doesn't exist. Devs know this and they said that it was supposed to come in a new patch or something (they said this back in like 2017-2018) so to this day there is still this "mystery" about this missing gamemode and difficulty.
Devs dropped the game and are working on the New Trouble witches port for consoles and shit.
>The only problem is the casuals who like the 'idea' of playing them but don't actually like playing them.
We call those nonplayers. See Touhougays as an example
Nobody in Touhou threads have any worthwhile achievement with the sole exception of myself
>1 cc'd the game on normal and hard >can no miss nearly every stage >still lose lives in this section almost every time no matter how much I've practiced it
only when watching the replay I notice when the ship that survived spawned and shot me. this section is driving fricking insane man, I can never see what kills me
u cant fix perfection
fpbp, based and /threadpilled
Play Espgaluda 2, there are randomized bullets when you go into awakened mode.
add more rng
there's a lot of good shmup roguelites on steam you might enjoy
>good shmup roguelites
name the best ones to play
He's probably one of those guys who put the shmup/bullet hell tags on games that have 5 slow bullets on the screen and a dodge button.
The Void Rains upon Her Heart.
Don't get filtered by the name it's a fricking amazing game.
you cant
I want more stage obstacles.
Bullets are nice, but actual level design returning to verticals would be great.
How do you suppose to dodge this?
luck and routing
>luck
skill and routing
bomb
Actually you can't. Boss triggers a 5-10 second shield every time you bomb which I distinctly remember because my stupid ass had auto-bomb turned on. Took so fricking long to kill him I never played the game ever again.
You aren't, Cave TLB's are mostly just a resource check full of impossible bullshit to force you to bring a whole run's worth of bombs and lives to the end for it to actually be possible. Ketsui is the exception to that and it's one of many reasons why people actually like Ketsui
Except for the part where unlocking Ura Loop is harder than Ura Loop itself.
Also this. Ket is still Cave bs but not because of its tlb
I was about to write "actually Evaccaneer Doom is hard but fair", heh.
You aren't. It's also why shmups have died.
Roguelike deckbuilding survival crafting souls-like shmup is the next and final frontier.
>How do we fix shmups?

>fixes your shitty genre by adding actual compassionate characters, Mozart-tier music and great mixture of RPG gameplay into it.
UT/DR have braindead easy gameplay with like, 3 or 4 exceptions. They'd be good if they were willing to challenge you like real schmups do. Also
>Mozart tier music
Frick off with that shit. Shmups have great music. Toby's is no better.
his work is heavily derived from touhou THOUGH
And touhou is heavily derived from all over the place, as is the stuff of Toby.
Undertale is shit, m8
your shitty genre by adding actual compassionate characters
Doesn't need it.
>Mozart-tier music
Play Radiant Silvergun, Gradius V, and Ikaruga.
and great mixture of RPG gameplay into it.
Radiant Silvergun.
I fricked up the greentexting but you get my gist.
>compassionate characters
there is nothing "compassionate" about them. Maybe for a r*dditor's first video game it's impressive, but then you've just got a bad case of pic related.
>Mozart-tier music
Don't insult Mozart like that
Bring back the euroshmup, frick it make a persona clone with shooting game on it, some kawaii voice actinge, don't make it too hard just pretend it's hard like it's dark souls 2 marketing give it some cliffhanger so the kids get to make youtube videos about the lore
amazing bait honestly
>Compassionate characters
>The only character people remember is the fat Skeleton who wait to kill the genocidal maniac after he has killed vast majority of the population, all because he wanted pussy from someone who was dead
I don't understand how the Switch port of this game is so perfect but most other shmups on the Switch even Cave ports are nasty crap.
>Did M2 port the game? It's good
>someone else? It's trash
too bad they dont port to pc
the point of these ports is to release the game on an modern platform but it will be a never ending issue because they dont release their ports on pc and newer consoles will keep launching with time
M2 didn't actually do Mushi, it was LiveWire. They're usually good, but sometimes miss.
LiveWire just ported the 360 version, like all their other Cave ports, and Akai Katana and Deathsmiles from City Connection. M2 didn't even handle the original Mushihimesama 360 Cave port, it was Futari.
The frick are you talking about. All the Cave ports on Switch are just the 360 ports and in Deathsmiles case, it even got additional content.
Anon you just want Parodius, specifically Jikkyou Oshaberi.
Jokes aside it's just a fricking good game.
I've played Parodius. Hmm yeah, the one with the optional objective to find some fairies and the narrator was very entertaining.
Yeah
Don't care honestly. I firmly believe shmups actually start being fun when you actually TRY to 1CC. And sure, maybe 2 or 3 or 4 credits if only to learn the game more quickly, but any more and at one point you no longer start giving a shit about the very things that makes shmup fun because you're basically invincible if you credit feed forever. You're missing the actual game entirely if you credit and bomb your way out of anything even remortly interesting that the game throws at you.
So, disagreed.
The most popular among a core niche of shmup fans. That's not the same as actual popularity. The most popular shmup is ikaruga anyway, not anything from Cave.
>The most popular among a core niche of shmup fans.
No, I'm talking in general.
>The most popular shmup is ikaruga anyway
It definitely isn't.
>I firmly believe shmups actually start being fun when you actually TRY to 1CC.
I firmly believe it isn't any fun at all to try to 1cc shmups
Ikaruga's popularity is mostly because it was way ahead of the drag curve by having a world wide release (very important) on Xbox Live Arcade. The game's gameplay mechanics have always been divisive.
person who started shmups in 1987 here
the spirit of shmups has always been using many, many credits to clear the game. players who clear shmups on one credit are something like 1.00% of the audience.
that being said, I still respect those players. However, you probably cannot even press button like takahashi meijin-- only I get to have opinion on this, your opinion is discarded into trash.
uve been a noob since 1987
You're absolutely wrong, the soul of shmups, and arcade games has always been to go as far as you can with one credit.
Arcade culture in japan has always been like that, you play one game, go as far as you can and leave the spot for someone else, credit dumping is not something anyone does outside of children fleecing their moms.
hi aktane
>and that's why games that did this tends to stick around even decades laters when the later Cave slop never really did.
What the frick are you talking about anon? CAVE shooters are still the most popular games in the genre.
2h is way more popular than Cave. Caveshit only gets played by a handful of incredibly autistic people who are autistic even by shmup standards.
Touhou as a franchise is popular, but the games aren't.
Big cope. Even the games are way more popular than Cave.
>Big cope.
Project harder. Barely any "touhou fans" actually play touhou.
This has been proven wrong time and time again with polls. Cave games are garbage and the reason why shmups all have the reputation of being nothing but danmaku vomit.
>touhou is popular because muh doujin music and hentai
>people see touhou in poll
>they vote for it even though they don't play any shmups at all
It's not complicated anon.
For better or worse M2 are autistic about accuracy so you're never going to see their games on a platform with so many hardware variables. At least you can emulate anything they put on Switch.
inaccessible games are better than accessible because it means they had a vision for the game and didnt have to change what the want for the sake of the unwashed masses. I will always respect the cave.
I don't think you know what "accessible" means in this context.
that's a cope by them especially since Taito and Konami frequently deploy ports by M2 on Steam
the real reason is that they don't want people to reverse engineer their tech since, fairly, that's what people pay them for.
>Mushihimesama Futari
you can grab it easily off the internet too (the mame version)
>Magically leave out the party where I'm talking about a decade and a half ago (2007-2010 specifically) where Touhou's popularity was snowballing out of a control.
SH3 support on mame didn't happen until way later.
Why would people lie on the internet?
Look at steam numbers to have a rough idea. The weeaboos do play/buy touhou, but the questin is how many hours is enough to be considered actually playing the games, and I'm not going to join that autistic discussion.
people dont buy touhou games on steam
They have 1k+ review on the ones released at the same time as the physical release. ~300 on the old ones. Four Seasons for some reason has above 4k. For comparison, Mushihime and Zeroranger have 1k.
hmm, way more than i would have expected
Review count is not a reasonable metric for anything
Cave owns, b***h.
sorry sweetie, CAVE conceded and is making a 2hu game.....
In all games I personally enjoy a lot I always do no damage runs. Not shumps but I got a few in Castlevania.
You can only pick one.
def the R-Type.
for me, it's the non-casual choice.
Silpheed on Sega CD is so fricking underrated.

Its an amazing game, but I wouldnt spend that much money on that.
>What are the best Darius games?
G-Darius (webm related)
Darius Gaiden
Darius Force
Darius Burst
and the original game Darius
I don't like the warning in this game. Too annoying and sometimes too long compare to Gaiden.
you can press the fast forward button if you find it too long
soul
I don't play shmups at all but I do have this game and einhander on my ps1. Both amazingly fun and beautiful games. For casuals like me the genre needs a couple titles that are less bullet-hell and more branching paths/optional tasks to encourage replayability. Of course you can try to 1cc these too, but it's probably less of a challenge than the crazy bullethell games.
Kinda what I liked about at least the early levels of einhander was that with the different equippable weapons and it not being too bullet-hell style felt like you could play the game by just playing the game and do somewhat well, but idk how to explain what I mean by this
Star Fox 64 man
Yeah everyone's played it and it's great sure, not too hard either. Even has the branching paths. And it was popular/sold well right? So why weren't sequels made just like it? Nintendo dropped the ball and made some fricking RPG instead. I guess we had a shortlived casual shmup era and apparently the game companies didn't think it was worth it to continue the trend.
coolest thing in einhander to me was the optional tasks and branching paths within the mission, always blew my mind when I found a new one.
Adventures is great!
Played the shit out of it then was lucky enough to get the game later.
aww yeah
>I don't play shmups at all
>but I play G-Darius and Einhander
where did this notion that only danmaku count as shmups anymore
in some ways darius games on their harder paths are harder than first loops of the average CAVE game because it requires different skill/memo
danmaku necessarily being harder is a fallacy i hope we get rid of, in some ways they're more fair especially once you learn a particular game's scoring mechanics and you can stock up on resources which older arcade games can be much more stingy about. also your ship's hurtbox is smaller.
anyway here's some shmups you might like, maybe some of you want to wishlist them for the incoming shmup sale
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1364760/COTTOn_RocknRoll_SUPERLATIVE_NIGHT_DREAMS/
lots of characters to play with, variety of set pieces
https://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=Qute
Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles by this developer have a story mode you can grind weapon levels on and play on different difficulties.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/377870/DARIUSBURST_Chronicle_Saviours/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1442820/RType_Final_2/
if you like the idea of casually grinding for content then look no further. r-type final 3 on PS5 has exclusive content if you have one.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1133300/Sisters_Royale_Five_Sisters_Under_Fire/
one of the most underrated games of all time, it's bullet hell but it's castle of shikigami in its most approachable form. there's a subgenre of danmaku that encourage you to "graze" bullets for score and powerups and you can get a very good taste for that here.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1884300/Deathsmiles_III/
bullet hell by the notorious CAVE but trust me it's very fair. for deathsmiles 1 play MBL, pick difficulty level 1 for all stages and skip the extra stages, then you only have to worry about the last stage, and hopefully you'll see it's not that different from routing G-Darius.
This is all very cool of you, thanks. I think the notion of bullethell being the only true shmups just comes from some of the autistic gatekeeping that inevitably happens in a niche genre like this. Being a roguelike fan I've learned to respect the autism of other genres
A lot of us just like touhou
rtype seems cool and all, and I played final on the PS2 once ages ago
but the slow scroll speed kinda bores me a little =/
That's fair, R-Type is the original "puzzle game as a shmup." You get some powerups and keep going until you eventually die and then you need to figure out how to play from the checkpoint well enough to repeat the cycle.
CAVE isn't even really a danmaku game anymore because its gotten to the point it expects you to destroy the bullets like any other enemy
Or the Type-C from the other games.
Make them require an eye tracker. Play entirely by looking at the screen.
The original Gradius will always be my #1. I'm a Vic Viper guy to the end of time.
Did you kill Vic Viper in Zone of The Enders 2?
SILVER HAWK EZ DARIUS GAIDEN ON THE SEGA SATURN IS THE GOAT
Gradius or Raiden. Everything else is some ugly trash. Honorary mention to Starfox and Darius, as they're just half-bad instead of completely disgusting.
Sadly I see no DOJ Type-A.
I'm going for silverhawk.
Silverguns in hand

No love for Twinbee? I thought he was cool as a kid
His games on console are garbage though, only the arcade one was good
nah Twinbee was my choice, luv punching some mofos
>His games on console are garbage though, only the arcade one was good
NES Twinbee was a huge part of my childhood with my brother
One of these ships is not like the other.
Hudson Soft's issues I don't know too much about
What's wrong with the puyos?
Apparently, Puyo Puyo's success was something that Compile was heavily banking on to the point of trying to make a theme park out of it, that apparently had so much expenses that it resulted in a bankruptcy.
Oh, then in that case it's just a pity to not see more done with Star Soldier outside of that one Bomberman reference nowadays especially considering how their most recent game was just caravan-mode only, hell Konami should do more with the shmup IPs they got.
Hudson was completely fine they just merged with Konami. Junkie has a video about it.
sorry not sorry
Is Under Defeat worth spending time on?
Also thanks to that anon who mentioned Crisis Force. That game is radical.
Also thanks to that one anon who shared this song. Got any more secret stuff to share?
better to play the games that inspired it imo
Which games would those be?
i mean, any vertical military-type shooters...there are so many
i would say play ikari warriors, but it'd make me a sadist
In Caladrius Blaze the girl you're playing loses some clothing when she gets hit, I believe that was a step on the right direction and wish Mushi had a similar feature.
reco (futari design) is my wife and is the main character of the best shump.

It's not one I know of myself, including with how much Zuntata remixed FAKE over the years at that.

>shumps games with god tier soundtracks
You've got a lot of games to pick from. More often than not, this particular genre fires on all cylinders when it comes to the soundtrack.
more randomness less routing
it will be decades until this can actually happen everyone normal thinks they intrinsically hate shmups and shmup autists have permanent bad taste
My idea is your ship gains experience in the game and levels up, and you can lose it by dying and also expend it as a resource.
if you haven't played this you're hopeless and your genre deserves to be dead.
make it 3d, put it on rails and call it sin and punishment.
People forget that gamers originally played hardcore games like shmups for softcore pornography. Now with porn being plentiful there is no reason for shmups. There is no fixing it and no need to fix it. Just get rid of them.

Schmups peaked with Area 88/ U.N. squadron and it’s been downhill ever since
why is it so rare to have shmups with different weapons you can cycle through at any time?
Because it's annoying to keep track of.
That said, play Andro Dunos 2.
Modern STG gaymers just want DDP clones
by rereleasing them to more platforms
Whenever I try to play Cho Ren Sha (Windows) the music is noticeably slowed down and doesn't match the pace of the gameplay. I tried every compatibility mode and nothing changes. Any idea how to fix it?
Remember when Cave got so desperate that they tried to appeal to Pierce Brosnan? Good times.
>Pierce Brosnan
the heck do you mean

I'm thinking about buying Dariusburst during the shump fest. What am I in for?

Arcade mode either already being solved, or doing offline local learning you need to clear it like some 3000+ times to get everything.
The 'campaign' for real testing your endurance and how well you think you know how to play shumps with it's challenge/limited loadout stages.
Free mode chances are where you actually end up playing 90% of the time given you can use any of the DLC ships for it.

I'm very glad the Switch got such a huge amount of Shmup ports over the years
You don't.
Shmups are niche, for better and worse.
HOLY SHIT SHUMPBROS

REAL??
There are already 2 M2 ports (Darius Cosmic Collection and G-Darius). But no shottrigger. Maybe 10 years from now.
Taito port on PC, like the Darius collections M2 did before. Their self published ports are still console only.
LOL I WAS THINKING OF WISHLISTING THE SHITTY CONNECTION PORT ON STEAM
BEST FRICKING ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE YEAR

frick this taito shmup shit where is my fricking port of elevator action returns
NOT the fricking port of the fricking playstation collection emulated bullshit version
Buy a saturn gay
i want to play it on STAYM
Anon it uses all 6 face buttons AND the shoulders, do you even have enough of a controller to handle it?
way WAY ahead of you
by the way anon since you know elevator action returns a game will come out one day with the initials M N and it is heavily inspired by elevator action returns even though it's very different as well
name your favorite thing from elevator action returns. this is important
also you will know it is my game because you can call a pterodactyl even though it makes no sense to be able to do so
The ducking
Frick yeah bro. what if i told you that you can even duck *while jumping*
I've trained for this for YEARS in goldsrc.
That sounds really fun actually.
😀 I hope I can provide you with a fun experience.
so you're gonna feature meta progression?
not my favorite feature of modern games, but hopefully it helps you sell!
g/l with your endeavors
oh and if you don't have amazing music and style, i'll be very very very sad
no it's not really meta progression, it's meta sideways progression i guess? about unlocking different rather than better things.
there will be some upgrades, but the game also features the concept of a "power shop" which is an important shop that you can't buy certain things from if the game judges you to be too powerful. encourages a balancing act.
the goal is the tight design of 16/32 bit era games.
the city connection port is good though, your best bet would be waiting for hamster but there's really no point. there's basically no difference other than the saturn version by ving adding an extra digit to the score so you can't counter stop it.
>RNG
takes no skill
>no RNG
memorization
You can't make a perfect shmup
memo is a skill as well, i've seen people fail miserably at what should be an easy memo part because they kept doing different things without noticing
If you could figure out how to make enemies have a bit more advanced AI in a shmup instead of just using scripted fights and tracking bullets, it might have a better balance of "randomness" and "memorization".
Speaking of M2, DOJ stream next week:
https://www.youtube.com/live/bZsPoNfPPmE?feature=share
Finally, a DOJ stream. Time to hit that bell notification.
rerelease einhander
Square should still hold the copyright and they've been happily letting Live Wire do the CAVE ports. Is there a dev group with a good track record for PS1 ports/remasters/upscales? That would be your best bet.
>Square should still hold the copyright
KH3 had references to Einhander so they probably still have
really?
Yeah the superboss of the gummi ship areas is Schwarzgeist from Einhander, not only that but the music that plays during the fight and its attack patterns are all based on Einhander too
There's also a gummi ship you can unlock that is based on Endymion
This theme has been stuck in my head for awhile
With more story focused games.

The Alltynex dev teased a remake.

also i just remembered this is coming out
twin stick shmup
clearly meant to appeal to people who aren't us
looks dope if it wasn't on the gaystation
>a remake of a remake
Cool but is it really necessary?
I remember a game that I coulda swore was a vertical scrolling shmup
the only thing I remember about it was that the playable characters were like, people using magic rather than ships
I think one of the characters was a girl using a staff and flying on a cloud and the only reason I remember this is because of that character's boob jiggle on the attract screen animation
I was 7 and saw this as an arcade cabinet in some small town shop in italy and i've never been able to find out what this game was
does anyone know anything, this had to have been between 1996 - 1998
This?
https://kidfenris.com/mlf1.html
This sure looks like it, holy shit
...is this game any good?
I literally just googled
>vertical shooter girl cloud
I have no idea beyond that.
huh, I tried a similar search plenty and it never came up
cool thanks
This coupon expires if you weren't posting here on the date issued.
it's one of Psikyo's best along with its sequel.
the other candidate i had in mind is
ah yeah the first poster was right
Gunbird is pretty popular and well known.
Steam now has Gunbird and Gunbird 2.
apparently Gunbird Steam is the JP PS1 version still or something because I remember the nerds saying the 2nd loop is completely different from arcade
>How do we fix shmups?

Yes!
I'll pass.
>cute girl
I am interested.
How can I play it for free right now? I will not do my own research. Take responsibility for trying to get others to play.
Sorry, I don't spoonfeed zoomers who don't know how to pirate.
K I won't play then
>girl
nobody tell him
uoooh
I already have, fun game.
Owning the OG GC and then getting GM, it really just felt like more of the same with a few tweaks on how things played out. I'll admit though the unlock ships feel far more unique now then they did before.
>it really just felt like more of the same
Well yeah, it's a remake of the game on GameMaker instead of whatever he used before.
I don't understand grand cross
I did, didn't like it, and got filtered by the boss who goes behind you in the 2nd difficulty mode.
>still trying to organize and tag my massive shmup music folder
I like Musicbrainz because it lets you tag music with an autistic amount of detail, down to the point of even labeling songs based on their original works.
More games that buck the arcade pedigree
Stuff like Tyrian 2000, Jets N Gun Gold, and Monolith, give me euroshmups but good
>Monolith
i hate its dashing system
>dash left/right
>the character dashes left/right
>dash up/down
>the character dashes forward/backward instead
why, just make him dash up and down
Thoughts
I'm a shmup noob but funny name aside this is my favorite one, what do shmup nerds think about it?
good doujin series overall
i think the super nerds would agree 2nd is best though
It looks interesting, i'll give it a try too
based, the soundtrack is what got me into the game
SSH always delivers.
apparently if you can get your hands on the NOT black package version it's the better game (back to faster bullets)
it's pretty good, the practice system is sad tho
Wait for mine to come out in three years ;_;
Play Eschatos
Blue Revolver Double Action is never coming out. It's time to move on.
What the hell is danbo doing nowadays?
So when are we getting senjin aleste to PC?
Anon, I...
these games are nothing special at all
they're not even "solid" or anything
totally forgettable
Anyone have the mega link for ZeroRanger?
Just make Einhander or Star Fox/ That it.
Is bangai-O a shmup?
Yes but idk how to play it.
Jus shmup
GG Aleste 3 on the Game Gear was patched recently, you can play it outside of the collection now.
remove credit feeding but also remove 1ccs, it's a stupid dichotomy, also make 'scoring' aka playing well in a specific way diagetic instead of a number
Making shmups about score would be really interesting. These days people also like build variety, because it fosters different playstyles. Ok hear me out:
>game is based on getting as high a score as possible
>leaderboards posted online ofc
>can invest in skill trees during a run to change your playstyle
>"skills" don't really upgrade your ship but instead boost your score accrual for certain actions
>ie bonus score for hitting enemy weakspots or consecutive shots without missing
>even weird shit like bonus points for time spent in certain areas of the screen (low flying bonus!)
>use different ship skill styles to boost your score as much as possible
I feel like this would be the most fun in a 2.5D game like einhander or star fox, really opens things up.
I got recommended to try Batsugun last shmup thread because I liked Cho Ren Sha.
I can definitely say without a shadow of a doubt now that I do not like shmups. I only like Cho Ren Sha.
Thanks for reading.
lmao did they recommend vanilla Batsugun or Special?
try something like Eschatos or Judgement Silversword/Cardinal Sins
those are much more in the vein of CRS
my next recommendations after that would be SITER SKAIN games, particularly Kamui or RefleX. these are actually on sale right now too and you can always just refund them
I don't think they specified and I'm not sure which one I tried. Whatever was on MAME.
Fine, I'll try those others you mentioned. Great thing about these games is that they are in no way any sort of big commitment.
I wish we can do a score battle on any STGs with other shmup nerds. Not sure how it would work out.
I still need to work on my Darius Gaiden and my DaiOuJou scores.
Been nice talking to other shmuppers nonetheless.
Ew, I don't. Stay away from me.
It's fun to talk about but playing against the kinds of obsessed weirdos who suck all the fun out of the genre is a good way to hate it.
Okay, maybe not with those players. Survival battles can be a thing here. Whoever goes the longest without continuing wins.
Since you posted Sayo-chan's game let's just do 2 player co-op.
Lots of stuff on fightcade available right now to play online.
We could do that some other day.
>fightcade
Never heard of it.
Getting late and I'm starting to feel sleepy. So next time we'll talk whenever there's another STG thread if possible.
>another time
How many times have I heard that before...
Well, here are the links anyway. Weird that you haven't at least heard of it before.
Fightcade 2 Download:

Man the new Pocky & Rocky was cool.
Sayo is cute
I wish alice gear is an actual shmup instead of a gacha
nobody outside of students and neets has the time and energy to focus on a 20-40 minute game where a slight mess up can be extremely punishing. in an arcade setting, you'd have to wait that long if someone else is playing. score runs in some touhou games can easily go over an hour
i think something like the avoidance genre in iwbtg fangames would be more accessible. each game is one boss that only lasts the length of a song, and the main goal is to not get hit. the only issue is you usually aren't "shooting" anything
i wanna be the music 2 does this idea decently well for an arcade-like experience
Innovate. One thing I've been thinking of is having bullets on separate planes with a mechanic where you have to shift between said planes to avoid specific patterns.
Already been done. It sucked. You suck.
>dumbass mech dual wielding big pistols
you have my attention
pretty sure they stole it from r-type and probably a few others I swear ive seen that pistol wielding mexmch in so many shumos
Post an example then, if you've seen it so many times.
so i'll get to see it a lot?
I can hear this webm crystal clear
Excellent! Excellent!
Don't be afraid of failure in your mission!
Now keep an eye on the enemy's move.
Trust your power, your luck, your spirit.
>tfw you are excellent
?t=65
This is going on my deck when I find it on cdromance.
it feels like there doesn't exist any 1cc runs on youtube that don't start with pre-selected weapon pods
call it autism but I feel like if the ship's main design point is grabbing new weapons as they appear, why start with powerful ones right off the bat? I always start my runs empty
You'll want this because they don't even checken out on launchpad and go fully for score. Also all secrets.
this here's the good shit thank you
Ran into it a while back, and the SECOND I saw x16 times 6 on stage 1 I knew this was 'the run' to watch and keep saved.
I guess that's fair. I have both regardless + the OST's as the dev's worth the support.
List of supported games, the icon in the top center of each says how many people are in each lobby currently.
Oh I'm blind, didn't see the tiny player count. Community seems almost nonexistent but this mite b cool for playing a round every so often. My internet's kinda shit though, not sure if I could handle a co-op shmup or whatever.
lol this you then
yesss damn
finally a "this is how it was meant to be played" tier run
Still trying to 1CC these two.
Surprisingly quite close to do it on Ikaruga.
turns out the one thing I really like in the genre is the sound of "ENERGY MAX" followed by the animation of your missiles firing in ikaruga
the final boss having a phase dedicated to just that made me very happy
God I love Cho ren sha.
Very portable and really addictive
Did type final 2 become rtype final 3 yet? I heard it get mentioned but when I try looking it up the results make it seem like some April fool's joke
PS5 only ATM, still no word about PC and other platforms getting updated.
Frick I'm salty, I'm still stuck on PS4.
why are non touhou stgs so fricking boring with bullet colors? I get readability is important but this was never a problem in touhou up until WBaWC anyway
>only recognize the probably 2hu bullets, plus Ikaruga and Strikers 1945
man I don't know shit about shmups
though I did at least play some of the Orange Juice shmups
I’m pretty sure none of those bullet pics are from Touhou. Unless one of them is some super obscure bullet type from one of the photography games or something.
I immediately recognize Gradius V, Ikaruga, Mushi, and Ketsui. I'm sure at least most of the DDP games are in this, too.

Couldn't unlock Scarlet Queen Spirit Kernel form, eh?
It's a game made for casuals what are you talking about?
No, I mean, like, it just freaks me out okay? The overlay with all those indescribable meters and bars, how points are called "spirit", the strange and overly-ornate names for regular-ass menu options.
I just don't get it.
but why
M2 when pls
Though I'd be even happier if they ported Ibara.
Legit if it got an M2 port I'd love to have it list what characters are valid for the secret boss to appear before the main boss dies.
They did say an Armed Police Batrider port is in the works, but that they ordered the composer to redo some of the tracks first because some original songs are dangerously close to being considered plagiarism
This game has more secret bosses than normal ones.
I'm convinced tonnor just throw random shit when he makes his music
Hear me out... What if you could turn multiple directions?
In deathsmiles and thunderforce v you can either turn around or have weapons that attack from behind.
You mean like in defender?
Yes.
play cybattler
>cybattler
This is actually incredible. Thanks, anon.
Are these actual open lobbies or is this like a list of supported games?
not that anon
Looks similar to homeboy here, however rtype final was PS2 and einhander was PS1
How do I install the BIOs for Fightcade 2? I have both a neogeo.zip and a neogeo folder in Fightcadeemulatorfbneo.
nvm got it
I haven't really been following the thread, but thanks to everyone who posted links to games.
And to anyone who plays just one or two games, just stick with what you enjoy. It's a genre that's meant to be played however you like.
Just finished up a playthru of Crimzon Clover myself.
what type?
C-Type, Novice mode
Just doing something casual.
Z-Type makes the game too easy at times.
I'm a sucker for Type-II myself, even if it keeps getting nerfed.
I don't really play enough to have a favorite, although I think that Type-II (the one that trails its options behind it) is a lot of fun. It just gives you more varied attack patterns than the others.
>even if it keeps getting nerfed
What? why? it's my favorite ship type even if I suck at playing it
CC -> WI it got a general damage nerf as it takes longer to clear things then it used to (Sky's big ships near the start are a perfect example of what I mean where you could easily nuke them before they'd even start firing in the Doujin release, but WI you both clear less and have to deal with their fire clogging the screen more with the same routing)
WI -> WEX nerfed the options on bosses, selectively in moving them to be directly in/on top of breakable hitzones to clear them faster (Stage 2's spider boss' legs now take forever to fricking clear with Type-II as a result.)
Aww that's lame
now try arcade original
Stage 3's flower spam and Stage 4's deep cloud thunder segment both ensure I cannot 1cc Arcade successfully even if the rest of it isn't that bad (even the EX boss is a lot easier then beating stage 3 without dying). If lives weren't as strict/limited I might have edged one, but as it stands it's just beyond me currently. One day though.
Ether Vapor and Astebreed already play around with this a lot I have to say, if anything both games get held back more via production values then attempts to be cinematic.
>Stage 3's flower spam
you just stream towards them and restream when they're gone
>Stage 4's deep cloud thunder segment
the one with those laser things that form polygons? iirc the hexagon phase has a safespot somewhere while the rest aren't too dense
but in any case you can still bomb when things get bad
t. flailed out a clear while listening to a trackmaniastreamer
Will edelweiss make another Asstobreed after the success of Sakuna?
I couldn't say myself in earnest, if anything still waiting on more from Qute myself as while not as cinematic, they still clearly took pages from edlweiss playbook with Ginga Force and Natsuki Chronicles.
Don't play CAVE
The game should show scale and make you feel smaller than the ship.in this sequence.
uh yeah bro that's cygni
I'M 31 YEARS OLD AND I JUST WANT TO 1-CC THIS GAME BEFORE I DIE
I really like the promo art for DOJ/SDOJ
>you will never pilot an advanced fighter pilot controlled by a waifu
why live
This shit looks kinda awkard, the DOJ method was better.
Just leave it to the kids
you do have a kid right anon?
>having kids
>when the world isn't magically growing any bigger to accommodate a growing population
lol
Not a problem for all the brown people. 🙂
using 🙂 lowers the quality of your bait dramatically
Why even bother? They'd only inherit a scorched Earth.
you had to do that in your 20s.
>How do we fix shmups?
I'm shilling my game every thread, but this time I'll just talk about my design fixes:
>danmaku style movement, focus button that makes you slow and shows your little hitbox
>health system, with bombs that consume health (using a bomb is always better than getting hit because you lose half life)
>megaman style levels, no autoscrolling
>no 'finish in one' sitting kind of experience
>fixed amount of lives at mission start, if you get to zero you lose your checkpoints and need to restart the mission
>permanent power ups you can change on the fly to adapt
what happened to Blue Revolver: Double Action? It's been 6 years
How are the Lethal Operation games? All of them just released on Steam.

Those doujin shmups? Man I haven't played those in forever.
there's a third one?
SDOJ on Steam when?
Are harrierlikes a shmup?
Make them easier to get into, and make additional hard modes that are fricking hard. The score system is only for the top 10 players, everyone else doesn't give a single frick so stop designing the game around score. Touhou is bigger than the entire genre and that is the reason, you can just go and play 'em. And even getting into touhou games is kind of hard.
Touhou isn't more popular because its easier, Touhou is popular due to its memetic presence in early internet culture and its shitload of fan content.
There's nothing wrong with them, OP pic is a bait image, most games don't look even remotely like this outside of something like a 2nd loop secret boss or similar which only handful of people will get to with abusing cheats
Remember that time where Kamiya embarrassed himself by making this terrible game?
Was it really that bad? All I remember about the game is Platinum being a bunch of israelites and selling the story mode as DLC
There was a big focus the story and obnoxious voice acting and he tried to pull off a wonderful 101 formation system but it was very janky, also like
said the game looks crusty as frick, there are decades old shmups that look cleaner and better.
what the frick were they thinking with that graphics?
It's alright, janky and really ugly but I like the huge amount of attacks you can use instead of having the usual shot + bomb and maybe some subweapon and hyper. It's certainly a Platinum take on the genre for better and for worse.
PLAY LIKE DREAMER
I'd rather fap to poorly drawn anime tiddies tbh
She needs more porn by the developer himself
*game lets you go behind walls*
*saves the shmup genre*
Now this is a quality shitpost. I do like Monolith though. And Starward Rogue, though I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one in the thread who's even heard of it.
>Now this is a quality shitpost.
Sadly I was sleeping and missed most of the thread, I wish I could've made it earlier.
>Starward Rogue
Never heard of this one, I feel a bit reserved regarding the game's look but it does look interesting to play.
'fun but kinda jank' is Arcen's wheelhouse. Most of their games aren't shmups, though, so aside from Starward Rogue and maybe The Last Federation if you squint, they aren't particularly thread-relevant.
shmup/dating sims hybrids
How would that work?
Isn't that Progear? Kind of.
>Psikyo never reclaimed the Aero Fighters IP
All I can do now is pretend a dolphin is flying my plane whenever I play a Strikers 1945 game.

shmup devs be like
>hmmm how could I lower my sales even further? I know! i'll pick a completely nonsensical name for my game!
You think that's bad? Check out _____ by Platine Dispositif.
Oh yeah this one is beyond autistic, the game even has a unique literally untranslatable language.
>the game even has a unique literally untranslatable language.
"literally untranslatable language" means "made up gibberish" anon
Send Zun bankrupt. Litigate him with hardcore anti-pedophilia laws. Several times in several nations clocking up a few centuries of down time. Then you send him to the deepest, dankest prison rape pit in Turkey and throw away the key. That would at least send a message. This one creep has turned an entire fun genre into a shit shower. See, the dark secret of 2Hu is that the vast majority of the fans are just there for the pedo imagery and have never played the games.
So until then, we have to suffer through the dark ages of shmups.
ok, OppositeWinner
Even if ZUN never existed all the current touhou fans would still not touch the genre.
The only thing that MIGHT have changed is the fangames turning into unique standalone titles but i'm not sure the people who made fangames would've been interested if it wasn't for the existence of the series.
zun actually bases the bullet patterns off legal responsibilities that he's dodged in the past, you'd only be making the games more successful
>muh pedo noooooooooooooo
have a nice day right now. e-girl is based, and I dont like toehoes
When if you absolutely hate touhou and everything around it I don't see how you can hate Zun.
>makes the games he wants to play
kek
Nobody want to play garbage like TD and any of the new games (16 - 18, HBM and the new """phantasmagoria""")
>outright says he would just keep making them even if no one bought them because he just makes them for himself
No, he's 100% doing it for personal gains at this point. He could had delayed his shitty games to fix it but still put it out
>And honestly if he wasn't like that Touhou would probably have never taken off.
lol
lmao even
Frick the 50 clears moron is here
At least he couldn't ruin the thread with his autism
???
I'm not Mariax (formerly pearl) though? Are Touhougays this stupid that you have to make up a narrative?
I think being able to shoot in both directions in a horizontal shmup is an obvious first step.
Play Deathsmiles.
Already have. I like Follet and Casper.
If you liked Einhander, you'll like Strania: The Stella Machina, AKA Zweihander
https://store.steampowered.com/app/407380/Strania__The_Stella_Machina/
I would enjoy this more if the entire Dan weapon usage system wasn't so jank at times. Otherwise legit creative and fricking fun ass shooter that both routes are worth playing.
What's so jank about it? An EXP system for weapons that purely governs score bonuses instead of shot power seems simple enough
Which /vg/tards in particular?
More games like Mars Rising / Deimos Rising?
- Patterns are not a stupid maze
- Faster, harder to dodge bullets
- Don't die in 1 hit, instead, it's about dodging as many things as possible on average.
- Charged shots and separate air/ground weapons to increase the skill ceiling of offense (most bullet hell shooting mechanics are extremely boring).
>Euroshump
Jets'n'Guns is legit the best one of the pack, look into it at some point if you haven't already.
At least it's music is far worth the admission price and practice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFeZE5NOiDY
>actual shmup discussion on Ganker
i love you guys, here's my almost-clear in DOJ 1 round
This thread is too based, it feels wrong seeing this on Ganker
the usual /vg/ tards who shit shmup threads up here were still asleep while this thread was active, so thankfully we could have a good one
that shit doesn't look even remotely fun, that's just pure autism pandering garbage
I have only played tuhu but I had fun with it. In the end the only bullets that matter are the ones right next to you and all of the rest are shiny fireworks to make it look more impressive
I bought DoDonPachi Resurrection on switch and I can’t get past stage 3.
Don't mind me, just having the best aesthetics in shmups.
They alright
Their hit sound could use some work though
>hmmm who should be the pilot of our super advanced and expensive space fighter?
>hey this literal child looks like the perfect candidate!
based
To be fair, they're all virtual ships inside a mad computer. They're basically piloting expensive intrusion software.
Refrain's a great game with great music. I enjoy my 1cc attempts.
Why didn't they use this design instead?
They did, in the prequel called Redrive.
I thought redrive was just a beta version like hellsinker 0.95?
Maybe, don't remember.
>includes ridiculous timeout phases in what's probably the easiest EX stage in the series
>bullets so fast that the only confirmed human clears are with slow mode hacks
>never does it again
I know some cave shmups had some anticheese patterns but still, what the frick was ZUN smoking?
>age 11
thanks for the vital information, game
Can't believe how fricking hard Varstray is. A shame it's abandonware
They just know their fanbase.
But seriously, dickysmiles is a really amazing game.
I remember hating Varstray. What do you mean abandonware? The dev disbaned?
I remember now. The translation was god awful and it was nonstop bullet hell. It was just exhausting to play.
Also I think it was the same two bosses over and over. Extremely lazy designs. I can see why they ditched this for Trouble Witches instead.
Yeah, it was an unbalaced mess.
nta but I still need to play this, the amount of content it has is amazing.
It's important that your players know they're not fapping to hags.
So where's the version of the game made for non pedos wierdos like myself
if you play shmups you like kids sorry man
right here
Nonconsensual sex with Casper!
Like fighting games, they are fine. The only problem is the casuals who like the 'idea' of playing them but don't actually like playing them.
>The only problem is the casuals who like the 'idea' of playing them but don't actually like playing them.
We call those nonplayers. See Touhougays as an example
Nobody in Touhou threads have any worthwhile achievement with the sole exception of myself
smooches, superkekker
have a nice day moron. So many shmup and touhou threads ruined by your autistic ass.
>improving thread quality standard is ruining them
Huh? Are you moronic lol
I don't get it
>I don't get it
just saying hi
By "we" you mean your troony discord server, correct?
Take your meds lol
Hello, then.
Again, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Who is "we", then?
My favorite "Shmup" is a port of an arcade game I had on the NES called "Dragon Spirit". I haven't really cared about the genre since, honestly
Are there any KINO shmups like Zeroranger with more of a focus on story
I know most of the genre isn't like that but on the offchance...
Play the alltynex series
A good shmup thread??? on Ganker?
I'm surprised. Good job fellas, take care
Good shmup thread.
Same time next month?
Will mark my calendar
There's a radiant silvergun thread up. Poor guy must have missed this thread.
>1 cc'd the game on normal and hard
>can no miss nearly every stage
>still lose lives in this section almost every time no matter how much I've practiced it
only when watching the replay I notice when the ship that survived spawned and shot me. this section is driving fricking insane man, I can never see what kills me
>discordgays woke up at the thread's end
Almost made it there
>check the /vg/ thread
>it's actually unironically a discord drama circlejerk
What the frick? kek
that's all of /vg/
Somehow it's even more pathetic when it's about shmups. I honestly was not expecting that. What a bunch of manbabies.
why did you think a genre that makes you look cool (to other internet addicts) would repel secondaries?
Really good thread but it needs to make room for more bear fricking and troon sliders.
