Yes. And borderline gay too, depending on depiction. Comic Conan is full gay.
Yeah, this. I hate near all other freakshit but loves these lil homies. Doing this comes with some interesting caveats that can be interesting to RP. PF1e had a random table to roll on and I typically use that.
First you gotta say what is wrong which if we go with lore.....nothing too bad besides its a "human with a funny hat" which a lot of people play them as instead of actual fricking devil people. Sure free will but you will have to admit how you see yourself can reflect onto your own personality.
We gotta see what's wrong mechanically which....nothing that bad really I like the subraces it all got aight stuff to it with it having a cantrip/1st-2nd level spell and darkvision. Its a solid racial option at least in 5e.
So what are we trying to fix? Cause it just seem like the only thing to REALLY fix it is to expand on them as a "Culture" which is impossible cause its just a human/elf/whatever either born cause parent fricked up or they got changed to one cause of a devil deal. You can't make them a city cause that means there are too many to really make them special. Kind of what I'm doing in my game where tieflings are making their own city but there's a whole divide between the ones who want to be peaceful and the actual devil worshipping "Embrace your inner evil" ones which is shaping up to be fun.
Agreed. It's up to both the DM and the characters to flesh out the world (though obviously the DM does the heavy lifting), so as long as the DM okays it, and both parties are interested in making a Tiefling "culture", this should be a really easy problem to solve.
>How do we fix Tieflings?
There is only one way, but it requires a change in how the game does races. Making them a universal subrace that can be applied to any race, pretty much like PF2e does ancestry and heritage. There, fixed. Now every race can have tieflings instead of the silliness of only humans having fiend tainted children. Everything else suggested in this thread is either culture war idiocy, grog bullshit, or nogames attempting to fit in.
>instead of actual fricking devil people
Theyre literally just humans with odd looking features. They are explicitly not devil people. The amount of fiend in them is extremely low, just enough to frick with their appearance and give them magical power, but beyond that, they are literally just a variant human.
People should be racist against tieflings as a class feature. If I were walking around and saw THE DEVIL out shopping, I'd lose my shit.
>If I were walking around and saw THE DEVIL out shopping, I'd lose my shit.
Heres pic related for you, did you lose your shit?
Get a better fricking group, you loser. People I play with can play anything from a minotaur to a tiefling and I know they won't be homosexuals about it.
Gonna try this myself now.
first 5 rolls for abilities, then 1d4 ror how many appearances, I'll roll 4 of them, and use as many as my d4 says.
I'll roll special side effects for times, and use those four in case it shows up as unlikely as it might be.
I guess dice+5d100+1d4+4d100+4d100 should cover it.
abilities >Suggestion once per week >Detect magic three times per day >darkness, 15 foot radius once per day >+2 saving throws vs acid >charm person once per day
appearance >blue tinted skin >roll three times.. rerolling rolls above 89
well I made two extra rolls so I'll use those >Goatlike legs >very small almost unnoticeable nose
okay I need 1 more appearance roll
also fricking god damnit
blue skin+goat legs, so close to draenei, then I lose my nose
okay, one more appearance roll
abilities >Suggestion once per week >Detect magic three times per day >darkness, 15 foot radius once per day >+2 saving throws vs acid >charm person once per day
appearance >blue tinted skin >Goatlike legs >very small almost unnoticeable nose >body covered in short fur or long hair
I don't feel so good
rolling a 1d2 for gender
..Male
lets go all out and roll for ability scores+comeliness, and reroll if it's below tiefling minimums.
>abilities
detect good/evil twice per day
detect magic three times per day
3 x half damage from acid (so 1/8?) >appearance
black fingernails
long thin tail
scaly skin
abilities >Suggestion once per week >Detect magic three times per day >darkness, 15 foot radius once per day >+2 saving throws vs acid >charm person once per day

I run PF1e and it has a chart like this. I tell them to pick one guaranteed feature they want and then I roll twice and give them whatever I rolled. I also have them actually roll for their innate racial power. I do this for both Aasimar and Tieflings.
I love that chart. I'll let my players make themselves a cute and sexy "totally not a draenei" tiefling. But they have to roll 3 times on the special side effects table.
Wonder what other interpretations one could go with for that trait >odd skin composition giving between 1 and 7 extra ac
sure,super hard skin
or maybe like ephemeral skin so some attacks that would hit just phase through
or the skin is super rubbery and not easily pierced
>or maybe like ephemeral skin so some attacks that would hit just phase through
Ooh! I like that, but would have to be for a very good roleplayer. Sure, they're really strong in combat, but outside of combat, they can never be properly touched. Anyone who tries only feels a cold wisp where their skin should be. They can never again know a lover's embrace. They can never again feel the warmth of the hearth. Theirs is an eternity of cold solitude.
But again, I'd only do that for someone who's really into roleplaying. None of that would matter to the typical munchkin who would only think of the next fight. >super rubbery and not easily pierced
They'll get that but only if they want to be king of the pirates.
Of course, they'll be told they're 47 years old but look like a child. Because they can't get wrinkles on skin made of rubber.
Literally just bring them back to how they were in 3.5 and earlier.
Thematically I mean. The mechanics should get a once-over too (There's no reason all Tieflings should be resistant to fire) but they don't need to be the same as the mechanics for earlier editions.
Basically Tieflings should be very rare and largely looked down on as freaks, fiends are bad and being directly associated with them should be bad. Get rid of the uniform Red/Purple skin and giant horns look and return to:
Unfortunately the biggest problem with Tieflings is the people who play them and the boat on those people has already sailed, we're never going to make them less annoying and WoTC is never going to stop pandering to them.
>Get rid of the uniform Red/Purple skin
It's interesting how the chance for red skin would be something like 1.28% using the old table, but now it's like standard.
Honestly I can't fricking stand the 4E/5E Tiefling design. It's so fricking awful and I do not understand what about it apparently appeals to so many people
>4E/5E Tiefling design
Compared to earlier design that was basically whatever you wanted to put on a standard human?
To the point where you could look like a regular human, except you smell bad or have flies around you all the time.
There was no design, there was a concept.
>Compared to earlier design that was basically whatever you wanted to put on a standard human?
The 4E/5E design is bad in a vacuum but especially bad when paired when the concept of the Tiefling which it didn't fit at all.
Attaching a fixed design to a concept that was supposed to be more diffuse is not an objective improvement. Especially not when that design sucks balls.

Your disliking does not mean that the core concept was not upheld to the letter. >Attaching a fixed design to a concept that was supposed to be more diffuse is not an objective improvement
So you are admitting they didn't have a design, they had an ideal, and nothing else. Creating a fixed design in a setting completely different than the one they came from is not a problem.
This is really just down to your opinion, and it's a meaningless one based absolutely on aesthetics that didn't even exist.
The problem is the picture you had in your own head.

No, I am not.
I repeat, this is an argument that you made up. It exists only in your own head. You are arguing against an opinion which no one holds. There did not need to exist a fixed tiefling design for the 4E tiefling design to be bad.
You remember those old cartoon devils from, like, the 50s or whenever it was? That's basically what 4e and 5's design is trying to tap into, hence the red, the horns, and the tail - all common old-toon devil appearance traits.
First you make them not be PC races.
THIS SAID, your pic is actually a good one.
For those that don't know, that is a custom race from Brancalonia (an Italy based setting) called "Malebranche".
Malebranches are demons that abjured their demonhood and crawled out of hell at the center of where "Rome" is. The proccess strips them from most of their memories, powers and demonic appereance, but they still have some marks (that are randomized and a Malebranche can still recover some of their demon aspects as he level up).
Rather than being outright persecuted The Church of the setting see Malebranches as an absolutetly WIN -proof that even demons can be redeemed and see the light. This said its not like people can't be warry of them either, and the demonic influence makes Malebranches prone to be pranksters.
>Canonically Tieflings have skinny thighs, no hips, no ass. > >Now no one wants to play them.
I've never seen a Tony D character without thighs, hips, or ass. Even the skeletons.
By playing a tiefling only campaign. In a tiefling only city in a tiefling only realm but with a twist - everything is bright, everyone is nice and happy, the taverns have only round rooms with no dark corners.
Make it so they actually cause misfortune to those around them, so people actually have a reason to mistrust and dislike them rather than fully relying on roleplay. Even if it's not their fault or is something they can't help, people will still urge them to leave or cross the street to avoid them because they don't want a random stroke of bad luck.
>People hated that lore.
That lore specifically, or do you just mean 4e lore in general? Either way, it's still a better way to actually get across how people are supposed to act around Tieflings if there's an actual mechanical detriment to hanging around them.
Without something like that, people will continue to play them as technicolor goat-folk rather than humanoids with a demonic ancestry.
Half orcs were the original tieflings, but you know what made them work? There was actually some kind of mechanical underpinnings which supported the fluff. They had a penalty to CHA, a low CHA maximum, they could not convince any not orcish npc hirelings to join them. It had tangible impact on play and reinforced a sense of setting.
Tieflings, that's all fluff and everyone immediately ignored it and rolled around with homosexual parties filled entirely with flamboyant tieflings.
What happened to the day when people stopped playing elves, humans and dwarves and tried to make their poor cardboard cutout of a character seem interesting by slapping on freakshit races?
If it wasn't interesting before being a blue cow person, a tiefling, or sentient ooze, it isn't interesting after.
They aren't a race, but a freak accident that happens on certain tainted human births. There will be one tiefling birth for every how many thousands of humans you want and most will be killed as soon as they are born because what community would let a fiendish baby live if not cultists of some sort? As such 99% of tieflings are raised by infernal cultists and evil people in general and are usually evil in turn.
>No they aren't playable unless you want to be hated and distrusted by every single NPC you meet or travel full of bandages and a cloak.
>tiefling female >big tiddies and ass, long black silky smooth hair, soft reddish skin >would be a 10/10 if it wasn't for her disfigured face and monstrous jaw >has no mouth, its just a gaping tenebrous hole with tentacles and jagged teeth down there >has to hide half her face with a veil or a scarf constantly, or anyone who catches the slightest glimpse of what she hides down there will want to gut her >one adventure goes particularly south and she gets captured >the fat breasts get her captors thinking with their pants, the decide to disrobe her >all three fail the fright check when they remove the scarf, with one of them fainting and the other barfing his dinner out >"Frick the bounty, just kill her here"
Rip, Celine the Thiefing Witch, one of my favorite characters ever.
>has no mouth, its just a gaping tenebrous hole with tentacles and jagged teeth down there >has to hide half her face with a veil or a scarf constantly,
even hotter
By not including them or any other speshul snowflake race in the setting. Humans, elves and dwarves only. In my games men play men, women play women, gays play elves and manlets play dwarves.
>no woman survives the birth >in a setting where her survival is just a matter of a cleric slapping her with heal or in the worst case scenario revivification during labor >not to mention all the spells meant to ease pregnancy or labor that would assuredly exist in a magic pervasive setting but that haven't been explicitly specified because they are not relevant to intended play experience
Writer wanted grimderp in a setting where death is not an issue, in other words, a total hack.
You are making BIG assumptions on the general availability of clerics with actual magic. Actual spellcasting clerics probably make up less than 3-5% of the typical faith's clergy and if you are outside of a city, chances are dealing with the midwife trying to deal with the fact that your fricked up goat-child got his horns hooked on your cervix and is pulling your uterus out thorugh your pussy. Shit, it might be a mercy just to kill the woman yourself and then behead the baby. Save the family some shame.
>your fricked up goat-child got his horns hooked on your cervix and is pulling your uterus out thorugh your puss
Bruh, kids don't have horns. Learn 2 goat.
That child is the offspring of a terrifying parasite from before time. I don't think Qlippoth-Spawn tieflings are born so much as they dislodge themselves from the husk of their mother after it has drained her of blood and nutrients.
Lots of Tiefling villains. Have them be buttholes. Ideally, bring back the old lore where they're "mutants" that pop up in a bloodline, rather than a people with it's own history and culture
I remember noticing during 3.5 a lot of the random mook enemies in adventures that could have been humans were tieflings for some reason; in retrospect, I like the idea of the default fate of most tieflings being some BBEG's henchman, in the same way that all Krogan wind up Mercs. Tieflings have a bad reputation for a REASON.
Alternately, if they must have a shared history and culture make them israelites. Make the hatred of tieflings resemble cartoonish Borat-eque midieval anti-semitism (Horns, drinking infant blood, never letting an argument go). Tieflings are actively rejected by the dominant LG Catholic Church analogue religion and live in ghettos inside of human cities. Or they live in little villages that care a lot about Tradition and wear a hat and have five daughters.
It's tragic what's happened to tieflings, because I have a weakness for the "Half-Monster Guy Who Fights Monsters" trope, like Hellboy or Blade, I thought it was well-understood that's what tieflings were FOR.
>Ideally, bring back the old lore where they're "mutants" that pop up in a bloodline
Even more of a snowflake freakshit isn't better option just because it's le traditional depiction. Cull them all.
What about fixing Genasi and/or Aasimar while we’re fixing Tieflings? How would you change either or both, especially in context with the changes to Tieflings?
Maybe give them a tribe of their own where they can flock together, or even their own nation, so they're not 'all' outcasts, and why just entering a town isn't too risky a proposition for a Tiefling PC. It would certainly make it easier to justify Tiefling Wizard PCs if they had their own magic academy, for instance, and that's just to start.
I think literal devilspawn should actually have an evil nature that they can choose to fight against. and bring back racism against them, you know, seeing as a majority of them are typical DEVILSPAWN
Same way you fix all the freak races. Remove them as a playable option. Enemy-race only.

Rolled 39, 74, 96 = 209 (3d100)
Doing it wrong, but I can't blame you because without the other text, it seems like you're supposed to roll once on each table.
The correct way is to roll 4 times on table 1, and only roll on the other tables if you get a result that tells you to roll elsewhere.
Yeah it's missing key information from the earlier page.
If you choose, you roll 5 times on the Tiefling Abilities table, instead of the standard tiefling abilities.
Then you roll 1d4 times on the tiefling appearnce table.
then IF, you get 88-89, you roll the side effect table.
Rolled 27, 22, 3, 12, 50 + 1 = 115 (5d100 + 1)
Gonna try this myself now.
first 5 rolls for abilities, then 1d4 ror how many appearances, I'll roll 4 of them, and use as many as my d4 says.
I'll roll special side effects for times, and use those four in case it shows up as unlikely as it might be.
I guess dice+5d100+1d4+4d100+4d100 should cover it.
Rolled 90, 37, 63, 70, 35 = 295 (5d100)

Some weird birb thing, I guess.
Rolled 88, 33, 29, 54, 45 = 249 (5d100)
Rolled 32, 86, 31, 56, 90 = 295 (5d100)
Rolled 77, 18, 81 = 176 (3d100)
>+2 saving throw vs fire
>extremely long eyelashes
>touch inflicts 1 point of damage due to cold body temperature
I'm so could it's difficult to burn me. Neat.
Make them more like Dragonborn.
The only good post ITT
People should be racist against tieflings as a class feature. If I were walking around and saw THE DEVIL out shopping, I'd lose my shit.
Canonically Tieflings have skinny thighs, no hips, no ass.
Now no one wants to play them.
>Canonically Tieflings have skinny thighs, no hips, no ass.
>
>Now no one wants to play them.
I've never seen a Tony D character without thighs, hips, or ass. Even the skeletons.
My comment is a change, not as a description of what they previously have been.
Because of the thread topic.
Make them all cute girls, preferably with big breasts
that's the status quo already anon
Ah yes, the AGP approach, that's worked out great so far.
>Make them all cute girls,
E-even the boys?
ESPECIALLY the boys.
Excellent taste, anon
Cute OC, would plap
they make cute wives too
By playing a tiefling only campaign.
4e did that with a tiefling subrace called the Broken Mirrors. People hated that lore.
We stop letting people play them.
Problem solved. Freakshit has no place as a player race.
They don't need fixing in Brancalonia.
>No they aren't playable unless you want to be hated and distrusted by every single NPC you meet or travel full of bandages and a cloak.
>tiefling female
>big tiddies and ass, long black silky smooth hair, soft reddish skin
>would be a 10/10 if it wasn't for her disfigured face and monstrous jaw
>has no mouth, its just a gaping tenebrous hole with tentacles and jagged teeth down there
>has to hide half her face with a veil or a scarf constantly, or anyone who catches the slightest glimpse of what she hides down there will want to gut her
>one adventure goes particularly south and she gets captured
>the fat breasts get her captors thinking with their pants, the decide to disrobe her
>all three fail the fright check when they remove the scarf, with one of them fainting and the other barfing his dinner out
>"Frick the bounty, just kill her here"
Rip, Celine the Thiefing Witch, one of my favorite characters ever.
>has no mouth, its just a gaping tenebrous hole with tentacles and jagged teeth down there
>has to hide half her face with a veil or a scarf constantly,
even hotter
Yep. She was the original inspiration, but I added some more body horror to not just have a sexy red girl wearing a mask.
at what time did tieflings turn purple and what's the reasoning for it? it looks fricking stupid
Frick you anon, lavender is the most aesthetically pleasing choice.
By not including them or any other speshul snowflake race in the setting. Humans, elves and dwarves only. In my games men play men, women play women, gays play elves and manlets play dwarves.
Elves are pretty snowflaky. It's just that by now they are too mainstream and overshadowed by other trendy, otherworldly unhumans.
Elves used to be the snowflake race
Now it's tieflings
How long before tieflings get replaced as the snowflake race?
And with what?
(You) need to define what is broken or malfunctioning before (You) can request it be fixed.
factually untrue
Dont make them sexy or make it so they cant frick anything other then other tieflings
Force them to be ugly
Rolled 66 (1d100)
Charisma score and tief random appearance table already does it.
One might just add one mandatory appearance roll to 1d4 base for extra freaky.
>No hairs only feathers
>14%
Guess I'm called Feather Face now.
Except 3e was literally the ONLY edition where tieflings got a Charisma score penalty. 2e gave them a Cha BONUS - their penalty was to STR and WIS.
>no woman survives the birth
>in a setting where her survival is just a matter of a cleric slapping her with heal or in the worst case scenario revivification during labor
>not to mention all the spells meant to ease pregnancy or labor that would assuredly exist in a magic pervasive setting but that haven't been explicitly specified because they are not relevant to intended play experience
NTA, but that does make sense. So when DO the horns start coming in?
The first horn tissue will start to grow around 3-4 weeks of age on most species of goat.
That child is the offspring of a terrifying parasite from before time. I don't think Qlippoth-Spawn tieflings are born so much as they dislodge themselves from the husk of their mother after it has drained her of blood and nutrients.
I don't think cure wounds can fix this.
Make being a Tiefling a level-one-only Feat.
Literally a billion times better than the modern conception where they're a clumsy analogy for American race relations.
I thought Tieflings are supposed to be Queer or Non-Binary or something else modern and moronic.
By what measure? If you mean the Planescape tiefling art, then DiTerlizzi' arts are all like that.
If you don't think elves or bariaurs are all queer, then neither are tiefs. But this line of think makes basically anything really attractive queer.
What about fixing Genasi and/or Aasimar while we’re fixing Tieflings? How would you change either or both, especially in context with the changes to Tieflings?
First remove them as a race. Then allow for any race to have a fiendish heritage and have their heritage apply appropriate buffs and debuffs.
Why with a good dicking of course. That's all they want after all.
Spaying and neutering usually works.
