Your backstory informs the character and explains their flaws and personality. You always make your characters flawed in some way, and those flaws should be significant enough that they lead to conflicts either external or internal on the character's journey.
The key thing is that your character carry the story and the audience's interest. A plot can be generic, but if you knock it out in the character aspect, people will stay invested. The worst thing you can be is boring and the second worst thing is to be too front loaded . Like be honest, did you really read through that, at best you probably skimmed.
People have short attention spans, this is why your work should respect their time. With that respect will come a mutual respect from the audience. Regardless if they like your work or not, they'll at least acknowledge you get to the fricking point. Brevity is the soul of wit. In otherwords, get to the fricking point first and foremost.
Even if you're building tension, or atmosphere, or intrigue, you should always go through the pathways of least bullshit. You'll find it makes your characters stronger, your plot more engaging, and your product better. You'll discover what bullshit is on your own time.

In the remake he was specifically asked to stay away, and then the same thing, goes to investigate when he thinks something has gone wrong.
Giving him a reason to be 30mins or an hour late to explain why he misses the start of a zombie apocalypse is moronic. Zombie apocalypses need to start slow and ramp up, otherwise you need to go through tortuous logic to try and explain how a virus infected everyone in a massive area nearly simultaneously and yet still have pockets of uninfected survivors. Horror comes not from BOOM INSTANT DEATH, it comes from the slow creeping dread that your initial hope at surviving is slowly turning into inevitable demise from an unstoppable force of death.
