The house was quiet, clean, and comfortable. I didn't have to ride a bus and pretend to be sick by coughing to get some space. I didn't have to drive in -40C/F snow. I could piddle around in the backyard in summer in the day instead of the evening. I could finish some games.

Escapism or just having something you enjoy can get you through some bad shit. Gaming is a hobby, which can be enjoyed alone, at one's own convenience, without much investment of energy, and is relatively inexpensive.

People are hardwired to have a preference for "what could've been" whenever they don't like how things went, and they will always imagine the scenario we didn't get would've been better. Mass Effect is a great example, people point to the Dark Matter plot established in the first 2 games that got dropped in 3. The writer of those games has said, if you read between the lines, that it basically would've ended with what we'd see as a lame, preachy environmentalist message on not wasting the resources we have. People don't care, they just automatically assume it HAS to be better than the 3 colors ending.

If you have something interesting to say then you should at least try. The problem with most youtubers is that they're trying to make a career out of it. So they all do the same clickbait titles with the same formulaic editing style and similar jokes that won't get them in trouble with the algorithm. And then on top of that they're always trying to inject some weirdly personal stories to build that parasocial relationship with their audience. And a lot of the ones that do the long essay videos are obviously just trying to put out content they don't care that much about and they end up just rambling for half the video

There's an easy way to know if a youtuber actually keeps their politics out of their videos. It's when it's genuinely hard to tell where they lean because they're willing to defend points both sides will make, they are willing to be the devil's advocate and actually properly represent both sides' position
