If I remember right, the dev kept promising mod tools. People were waiting for them but they never appeared so customers went elsewhere and eventually the dev just abandoned it.
The dev eventually did deliver on the mod tools, the game even has a Workshop page and a pretty good conversion mod called Colonial Charter
>Never got the hype it had or good will/reputaion it accumulated.
It was first of its line.
To put that into your movie perspective: it's late 00s and Hollywood just started to make remakes of the 80s IPs, hey, wanna see the new Indiana Jones movie? It's going to be great, I've heard commies are his enemies this time.
Since Banished came out, "never-to-be-finished colony building sims" became a genre on its own, each and every one of them with the same set of issues, so people became both aware and weary with it.
First off it came out with city building and sim games where considered dead. Second it added the survival element so it required much more managment than previouse builder games.
SHH! You can't ask that! Just accept that it is unfinished because it is!
>"Survival" colony sim has no actual survival elements to it >There is a SINGLE event bringing in outsiders to you >In fact, there are barely any events at all >Nothing than own frick up - and a massive one - can set you back
And this is like the top of the top of my head. All of those were promised when the game was still in dev and never implemented or addressed
>"Survival" colony sim has no actual survival elements to it >There is a SINGLE event bringing in outsiders to you >In fact, there are barely any events at all >Nothing than own frick up - and a massive one - can set you back
You can't complain about no survival elements then b***h it's too hard in survival aspect lol
>"Survival" colony sim has no actual survival elements to it
It does though. You have to manage food, warmth, tools, population control, happyness, and disasters if you have it turned on. >There is a SINGLE event bringing in outsiders to you
Actually it can happen multiple times, plus your population can give birth so why this is an issue is really weird unless you're one of those people who thinks the only way to get more population is from migrants, which only shitty survival games for morons do that. >In fact, there are barely any events at all
Traders, stavation, disasters. I'm really confused on what you mean by events. You mean really random ass bullshit like raiders, giant monsters, or some other RNG bullshit that isn't actually fun? >Nothing than own frick up - and a massive one - can set you back
so you admit that it's a survival game?
Seriously, what exactly did the dev promise that isn't in the game? I have a shit ton of hours and followed the dev blog. Everything he wanted to be in the game is in the game.
The game is pure trash and it shows that they never even bothered to finish it. The problem with making time pass so quickly (inworld, not the game speed) is that when you assign them to do something even slightly far away; They get cold/hungry and double back over and over again making the tasks never be done.
Also, the scripts for eating/hauling are super trash. I ran out of food for the winter on hard, then afterwards the fishing/foraging was yielding food again. But they continued to starve because after a single batch of food was done, every pawn would simultaneously run over to the depot and fight over the food. Then store the food in their house and the family would try to eat even though it wasn't enough for one house let alone a city. This repeated forever until they all died kek, because they continued to stop working for more food.
If I remember right, the dev kept promising mod tools. People were waiting for them but they never appeared so customers went elsewhere and eventually the dev just abandoned it.
Colonial Charter makes the game actually somewhat finished. But ultimately, Workers and Resources, Endzone, and Frostpunk do a better job than Banished. Which one you go for depends on exactly what you are looking for, but they all are good games.
It's a bit simplistic, imho. But it's not bad. Not quite my cup of tea, but I play it occasionally when I want to do a colony builder for just a couple days.
This game spawned a bunch of clones, all of them somewhat worse than the original. W&R is an exception.
The worst offender is Patron and its broken logging industry.
>Wait for yet ANOTHER overhyped game that's in dev since forever (and will stay there for another half a decade), so you can be disappointed once more!
I honestly don't get the mentality that's pre-requested to be still playing colony sims past '20 or so mark. It's like an abuse victim >No, no, he will finish it >It's a passion project of his, be more considerate >Well, the updates might be a rare sight, but he clearly listens to us, just check the patch notes >What do you mean "abandoned"? I'm still playing it! >It's going to be out in 2031, just check the dev diary >He's just having a hard time in his life, give him a break
The only other fandom that's this much damaged are people who slavishly followed Project Zomboid from the very start. And it's worse with them, because the devs eventually DID get their shit together and started working on the game (it's still an endless beta, just the functionality increases ten-fold in past 4 years)
Yup. It's the same thing every every autistic genre.
Factory sim games. >It's factorio, BUT WITH 1 EXTRA GIMMIC THAT MODS ALREADY DO BETTER! >And 10 less things because we don't actually understand the genre or the game we are basing it off of at all! >It's both more shallow and more tediouse at the same time! >Also we don't have combat because not only are we pussys but that's to hard lol.
Dwarf clones. >Look at this GIGANTIC BASE YOU CAN MAKE! >MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ALL WITH THEIR OWN PERSONALITY! >Actually though if you get more than 5 people in your base the game slows down so bad that you would sware you where looking at a photo album with your grandma. >Also all your colonists are so fricked in the brain it's a merical if you even get pass the 5 minute mark without them literally gutting each other and then raping their eye socket because "not sharing the same favorite color" makes them hate each other that much. >And if you do make it that far they'll still have a complete mental break down because not only did they go 5 seconds without eating overly processed food, but even basic food makes them unhappy for some reason. >Oh you want to actually advance to make all the good stuff? Well it requires a shit ton of materials, 5 different rooms and an overly complicated crafting and tech tree to make, a basic bed! >Ah you made it past 15 minutes? Here's a horde of raiders lol. >git gud it's clearly a you problem and not the game.
Colony sims. >Hey remember Banished? >Well what if it had... >Wait for it... >still waiting? >???? >COMBAT! >That's it. That's all we added. >Why yes we have no idea how to actually implement combat to make it intuitive and not shit, how can you tell? >But don't worry cause instead of vauge colonal.midevil times our game is IN A POST APOCOLYPTIC FALLOUT 76 WORLD! >And if you don't like than here's colonal/midevil times verson. >that will be $29.99 plus tip lol.
>>But don't worry cause instead of vauge colonal.midevil times
This reminds me:
There was a project of a colony sim where you literally build that: a colony in 1700s Carribbeans, and its gimmick was water management. What happened with that project? It's been 6-7 years ago, I think.
As for the rest:
I think it was the worst with Dwarf clones, because RimJob happened, and that game delivered. So now you have endess clones of RimJob that also try to be Dorf clones, resulting in endless stream of shit from all indie venues and also low-budget projects by mid-sized studios.
>because RimJob happened, and that game delivered
RimJob is absolute ass and is the reason why dwarf clones are so shit. It's actually what I generally based that part of the post of. Dwarf Fortress is good because at it's core it's a building game. The entire point and everything revolves around building and expanding. Rim World failed to understand this and instead thought the game was about baby sitting your dwarfs. Rim World is like if you took the sims and just ramped up their emotions 10 fold. This is why it's also huge in to streamer bait because the fun doesn't come from actually playing but seeing your colonists go crazy over dumb shit and then watching them kill each other Happy Tree Friends style. It's also why the new updates and DLC is about single entities rather than groups.
>>But don't worry cause instead of vauge colonal.midevil times

The joke is that Banished, the game that opened the spigot of colony sims, already had all the fricking issues rest of the genre has, yet people time and again expect something else, this time without fundamental flaws that come from the genre itself. It's just baffling
Not to mention with all these never-ending Dwarf Fortress style autism-simulators, it's not about the final product so much as the process to get there. Their work is never truly done, so you might as well go along for the ride.
Every game is sold on the idea that one day it will be completed. When that doesn't happen then yes you are cheated out of your money. Specially when a dev doesn't even remotly come close to what they promise like with many EA building games.
>city builder
This game was initially scaled at the village/small town level, some mods try to take it a step further to where you can build towns but mechanically the game wasn't meant to have that sort of scale.
Still a pretty good and enjoyable game once you get the hang of it and there's definitely a lot of mods to enhance the experience.
No, it comes from American diet. Anyone eating the slop Americans do would - and does - look the same: a human blimp. The only difference is the skintone.
>No, it has the most horrendous, Duplo-block, low-poly aesthetic
You could have just said it was a Unity store asset flip, and I would have agreed with you.
Friendly reminder that the only remotely good thing that came out of this genre was Dawn of Man, and it is a fricking edutainment game to tech children about the prehistory in northern Europe.
>Wait for yet ANOTHER overhyped game that's in dev since forever (and will stay there for another half a decade), so you can be disappointed once more!

It is until you get to about a 350 pop, then the cracks start to show up really quickly and your supply chains stop producing.
It could be a great one though, when it's finished.
Imagine if an RPG had cities with a real economy like this game. Kill enough people and you mess up the supply chain. Sell them logs and they build faster.
I recently played Lords and Villeins and after I finished the slog that is the tutorial campaign I found that under a Rimworld clone facade laid not a Banished+Rimworld+Dwarf chimera but the Spiritual successor to The Guild 2. It also made me realise that Colony Sims are gay and that what I want is the Guild 2 with some city builder mechanics. Frick making shitty villages for myself let me make a Dynasty off the backs of Peasants while bamboozling the King and other nobles.
I'm tired of builder games with extreme micromanaging.
It's fine at the beginning, but later I should be able to hire managers and stuff to deal with the crap that's beneath my station.
Are all my citizens a bunch of literal drooling morons?
they didnt even fricking finish it
Never got the hype it had or good will/reputaion it accumulated.
Then again, I got baited into watching Barbie movie so maybe I'm just a moron.
The hype was 100% in the aesthetics

The game was finished, people just got upset that he didn't milk it with DLC.

Not him, but really? You have a screenshot of the tweet? This is legit news to me.
what is it missing
SHH! You can't ask that! Just accept that it is unfinished because it is!

Frostpunk is better both as a city-builder and as a winter survival game
Banished is cool with mods though

It's okay, but too simple. The same devs are working on a Rome-themed successor which looks a lot better and I hope will be a better game.

Endzone is complete garbage.
This game spawned a bunch of clones, all of them somewhat worse than the original. W&R is an exception.

Farthest Frontier is objectively better but your nostalgia goggles prevent you from seeing this
I love Farthest Frontier. Just the right level of comfy for me. Why can I only move blueberry bush though.
Airborne Kingdom
Sky Pirate Raider gsg when?
wait for Manor Lords

None of that makes rim world shit you moron.
It does if you aren't a fricking moron which you clearly are.
Rimworld has a completely different focus than dwarf fortress you moron. Both good games in their own ways
Dwarf Fortress is normiecore now, you don't get any cred for pretending it's better than RimWorld anymore.

I've always wanted to make a roguelike RTS built around city/fort management like Banished/Frostpunk, but it's a colonial sim.
>colonial sim
I approve.
the fridge-shaped goblina genetics in modern-day mestiza populations didn't come from europe
No, it comes from American diet. Anyone eating the slop Americans do would - and does - look the same: a human blimp. The only difference is the skintone.
if you liked the time-pressure aspect of this, check out Against the Storm (still EA and way more complete an experience than Banished)
Settlement Survival is Banished but better.
Eh, it's banished + colonial charter, but made by chinks.
Does it at least have Chink aesthetics, or just drab and boring regular stuff?

Land of the Vikings is unironically a big upgrade. Pretty comfy winter tavern and snowy village, tbh
