How have you liked the demo so far?
I started playing a bit of it yesterday. I love the idea behind it. I'm worried it's gonna be a bit too much since I don't normally play strategy games. But it's Vanillaware so I feel almost compelled to buy it.
Also, what system are you getting it for? I wanted to get it for PS5, but the demo on the Switch felt right for a game like this.

      >I hated FF12's gambit system
I actually loved FF12's gambit system but I don't see how it applies here. Are you able to tell units what moves to use later on?

I played a bit more of the demo on the shitter. Think I'm gonna get it for the Switch over the PS5/Xbox for that. 4k graphics would be nice though, not gonna lie. But the game is already gorgeous.

        >Are you able to tell units what moves to use later on?
The entire battle system is based around programing your units into what their behavior in combat is. And this is not in vague generalities, but in pretty specific behavior: if X kind of unit reaches Y health, use Z move, etc. If Front Row Ally unit falls below X threshold, use Y.

Really liking the demo a lot, Vanillaware art is a treat as always, Basiscape music kicks major ass again, the gameplay I had some worries about but the demo cleared them right up, mixing and matching units and strategies feels super nice. Story's kinda whatever, it'd be real nice if it got better later on, but I wouldn't mind too much if it stayed as is.
What're everyone's thoughts on consumables? I'm usually the worst hoarder you've ever seen, but in this game the fights really drag on if I have to send a unit to sit in a base for 4-6 hp per tick instead of just using a potion to heal 30 instantly. Is there any reason to be stingy with them at all?

So there's no chaos frame mechanic, right? Seems you can just liberate a town and not have to worry about alignment. It was a cool idea in theory for OB, but in practice it is awful.

      Anonymous

I haven't played Ogre Battle, but after UO's demo I'm curious. Is the chaos frame thing in both SNES and N64 games, or just one of them?

        Anonymous

Chaos frame is in both of them, but they hide it in OB64. Basically towns have alignment (evil or good). If you sent a "good" unit to an "evil" town you won't liberate it, you will "capture" it. Same with sending an "evil" unit to a "good" town. This lowers your chaos frame to be more "evil." And of course if you match a unit to the town's alignment, it's actually "liberated," and this raises your chaos frame to be "good." This affects the story path you take and the characters you can recruit later on. In the SNES you could always see your chaos frame, but in OB64 you would have to see the results of certain story events to get an idea of which path you're taking if you aren't being very intentional with every town liberation.

The main reason why it kind of sucks in practice is that you need evil units for evil towns and good units for good towns and neutral units for neutral towns, and sometimes your units just don't align the way you want them to so you can't liberate certain towns.

In real practice, you just play through OB64 not caring about your chaos frame and just play the game how you can until you're autism makes you try to control the mechanic.

          Anonymous

Oh and also whenever you look up guides on how to control chaos frame, a lot of people just end up cheating in these items that manually raise/lower alignment in order to actually control alignment. You're supposed to do things like have your good units like knights/clerics fight evil units berzerkers and witches to keep their alignment high. Or have your high level units kill low level units to lower their alignment. But it never works out how you want unless you're just really fricking lucky and reload your saves.

            Anonymous

            >a lot of people just end up cheating in these items that manually raise/lower alignment
They could just recruit a bunch of skeletons and pair them with whoever they want to change to chaos/neutral

Alignment did have some cool ideas, though. Like if you wanted to have an angel unit, you would have to have a "good" character die (and if you met some other requirements) they would turn into a really powerful angel unit.

You can however do seemingly everything in the Cornia area which has a lot of battles and content, probably doable if you skip cutscenes and play on easy mode, but on the hardest difficulty and playing blind I wasn't able to do everything

I'm on the hardest difficulty and skipping everything (Second run)
If you can save a few minutes here and there with optimal teams you can probably just barely make it through all of the available content (Since the game can't end mid mission afaik)

I could write a essay on how great it is with the balance and unit compositions shifting throughout, or how varied the maps and strategies are, how it handles inventory and resources in a fantastic way. It's borderline prefect mechanically.

It's an FE reskin with an overly centralizing "triadic advantage system"/rock-paper-scissors mechanic (it's basically actually is what people THINK the FE weapon triangle is). You're mostly just smashing your guys against the guys in red in bland maps. I can't remember ever having to think much or redo my strategy in the game.
I give it points for borrowing from FE rather than FFT/TO but it's not a great FE clone.

What a sad post to see, someone who's missed the forest for the trees.

Banner of Maid is a game where at every step through you think you've understood the meta and what's good, and then it changes and the units abilities evolve, and you're constantly updating your tactics.

At first Line Infantry seem useless and Skirmishers are Gods. Then Skirmishes are situational, and you need Light Cav and Line Infantry. Then Heavy Cavalry takes over the scene which makes Skirmishes Gods again, but then HC gets double change which means you're relying on LI, and so on and so on and so on. It's absolutely fantastic.

There's no FE game with as good balance, mechanics or levels.

I dont' think they get rapport scenes, but they build up the rapport meter. The Rapport meter is what gets units buffing each other by being around each other. The scenes are a bonus for characters

Well I meant more playing through the game with some friends watching but creating/editing characters for them type deal, if they get rapports that's nice too

I think I heard that you can't name units yourself, only pick from a preset list of names. But other than that yeah.

Yes, I did it right after the mission where you get the bow guy, I didn't realize you could go farther south in that area. It was tough but doable.

Yup, barely beat it right after doing the gladiator battle in the south.
I managed it by bee-lining for the first two towers with my archer and taking them out, then slowly whittling away the frickton of enemies that the mage spawns.
Kiting enemies away from mages was super helpful too.
And I bet the arrow rain map skill is really good in that stage though I never had the Valor to use it myself.

Combat is too slow considering you have no input on it, the reason this type of thing works in other tactics games/fire emblem is because it's a quick one and done you're not having to sit and watch a slow ass back and forth every single time

As is I really have no desire to play this despite considering it to be a day one buy up until the demo, I had assumed there would be at least some sort of speed up option in the menu but they really expect you to watch every single auto battle for the entire game

They're super squish, actually, they just have a lot of HP. Equip items that increase PP/AP for more attacks and use skills that steal PP (Thief) and they're some of the weakest enemies, almost hilariously easy to kill in fact.

What value type are you searching for/is it? If it's some kind of frickhuge number, it might be a double or float (probably a float).

              Anonymous

So far I only tried 4 byte and I mean that the second display goes from the displayed second while in the menu to like 3239493059 while the game is running, then when I pause it updates to the current shown second
I tried using functions like "find what writes to this address", "find what accesses this address" but neither of them turn up anything if I pause/unpause
Trying to change or freeze the value also doesn't work, it automatically updates itself whenever you go into the menu

    Ranged support seems really important

      Anonymous

The chip damage they provide is nice, it just sucks that deployment is so expensive so you can't just make a unit exclusively of rangers/mages for the chip damage. Also, range support is quite situational IMO due to how much resting fricks you over (unless you're on a tower). If you're able to get your units to smash into the enemy unit you're more likely to get better damage/stamina.

        Anonymous

To add to this: range support is infinitely more powerful for your enemies than it is for you.

To add to this: range support is infinitely more powerful for your enemies than it is for you.

I feel like there are bosses that almost can't be broken without ranged support though, like being able to put damage on self healing classes before you even get into the "fight fight" is pretty big.
Also no matter what, only one unit can actively fight at a time. Ranged support is just extra supplemental damage even though it costs stamina. Also the way combat works in this game as well as how strong garrisoned bosses are I feel like ranged support + your best possible unit is often times a stronger option than say ramming a boss with your strongest unit, then having them rest, then having your second strongest unit try because if they aren't strong enough the boss is just gonna heal instead of die.

yeah that's what I tried to find with the save that's right before the timer starts, but no luck

What I'd do is search with all value types, unknown initial value -> while the game is running, search for changed values (without doing anything, just idle somewhere) -> pause -> search again for changed -> idle -> search for unchanged -> repeat

          Anonymous

Then again, my experience with pointers and Yuzu/Ryujinx, they're fricking impossible to find through CE, so you might have to frick around like this every time you restart the emulator. Might be someone who finds a Switch code sometime down the line though.

Okay, I've done that a bunch, but it's pretty much stalled out around 49k values that keep changing while unpaused and stay the same while paused

            Frick yeah I found it!
I basically did what the poster above suggested a ton of times, then whent for increasing values only a few times which filtered out a lot, then loaded my save with a lot of playtime and noticed a big jump in one address, set it to 0 and bam 5 hours playtime again
For me that address was 17C57EE7BF8, not sure if it'll be the same for everyone using Yuzu

4 bytes, it ticks up by like 1k per second so in a long save file the number will be pretty high
You can freeze it with Cheat Engine and the timer will be stuck at 4:59:59
I'll check now if any issues come up while playing like this

Scratches my autism in a really good way, reminds me of some of the crunchier FE games.
I seriously thought it would not like it based on the real-time movement, but the team building is very fun and rewarding and surprisingly strategic. You feel like such a gigabrain when you figure out the solution to a tough overworld sparring match (they reward 2000g each, so worth doing).
I struggled hard to redbar Prosper's uber tanky unit with my 3-man-strong squad on Expert. And these weren't jokers, they had some serious kill power with the best equips and had been shredding through everything else including mission bosses. Slept on it. Woke up, caved and bought a 10000g "Dove Plume" (+10 initiative).
This was the key, plus a bit of fiddling around with the tactics conditions. Putting that on Mordon pushed him to first attacker and his debuffing skill was critical in efficiently spreading the damage around.

FEgay here that hates grindan shit, is the game good?

      Anonymous

There's no grinding that I've seen and certainly none seems necessary. You win battles based on good team composition. You can think of a UO "unit" (platoon/squad) as being like an FE "unit" (soldier). Individually one soldier is terrible in this game, it's the synergies that make them into a whole, functioning organism. Your job is to build a "unit"/squad into a synergistic whole that is somewhat adaptable to the unique conditions presented by each face-off (you get a chance to use items and change unit position before each individual fight).
It's akin to the highly customizable unit building seen in recent FEs and you don't grind for it - equipped items, classes, tactics conditions (programming your unit), and action order are way more important than raw stats.

I've enjoyed it, but I'm iffy on it and very iffy on the way stages are timed. The time pressure doesn't seem to add anything, but makes it annoying.

I can take as long as I want in Fire Emblem.

the timer is there to prevent you from farming reinforcements

Turtling is gay. And the time limits are really generous anyway.

        Anonymous

The time limits are absolutely not generous. Maybe if you're using the Paladin to smash through everyone in the early game, but I benched him and I was getting close to the limit every mission.

If there wasn't a time limit you could just farm reinforcements infinitely for xp and if they limit reinforcements you could just turtle until they run out. Time limit seems necessary to me.

If you didn't have the timer you could just garrison abuse, valor point farm, exp farm etc.
Forcing you to constantly cut forward is good

Just don't have reinforcements give Exp, or make Exp a value you get from beating the map, not from killing an enemy unit.

There's plenty of better answers. And given how supremely unpopular time limits are in games (eg Kingmaker gives you months and months of leeway but people still complain) I imagine it'll get smashed by the critics for this.

The timer is fine. The issue is that it doesn't have a ranking system to show you how well you did. Sure, I took one minute to beat the map but is that good or bad?

        Clearing fast is good

It's just a different style than FE or FFT
Ogre Battle is older than FFT even
There's Symphony of War which is sort of a hybrid between FE map movement (grid, turn based) and this games squad based combat
The Squad based combat in this game is a lot more complex though because of the gambit system and items heavily affecting what your units can do, and this is just the early game with mostly unpromoted units

Squad programming auto-battler, I guess. Really rolls off the tongue.
I can't understand why anyone would prefer to manually input these commands for each battle. Would absolutely destroy the pacing and tire you out. The game is NOT actually real time and isn't trying to be. What it's doing is testing your strategy (general) at the moment of deployment, and your tactics (specific) at the moment of engagement. That's where the game is, focus on that and you find the fun.
I think people are not accustomed to it but there's just as much input as traditional TRPGs, it's just more frontloaded.

        >your tactics (specific) at the moment of engagement

I haven't played the demo yet, but I understand there will be more squads to unlock meaning there will be more and more to field. I can't imagine anyone sanely manually inputting commands for all those engagements.

I didn't like diofield chronicles either

          Anonymous

This system isn't incompatible with turn-based combat, though. The choice to make the movement happen in real time is somewhat arbitrary. You could have the exact same system in a Fire Emblem type game, and in some sense FE is already like this. Fights in FE are resolved before they even happen based on simple mathematic interactions.
I didn't care for Diofield either because as far as I recall, it wasn't like this at all. It just felt bland and unmemorable. Maybe I'll give the demo another try to understand why I bounced off it, while this appeals to me.

This train of thought wasn't worth a new thread so I'm sperging it here. I finally played 13 Sentinels recently. It was pointed out to me that a common theme in VW games is necromancers having massive milkies, pic related. Then in Aegis Rim Chihiro Morimura has massive donkers, a fact which is pointed out by the characters, and something I took note of and kept an eye on. After finishing Nat and Yuki stories I thought the breasts were just a nod to her originally heading up Project Ark, bringing the dead humanity back, but then later realised her initial goal (from two loops ago) was to bring back Izumi and reprint herself, and 2188 Chihiro wanted to implant her own mind into her clone, making it a consistent theme of her trying to circumvent death, as a necromancer would. Therefore, massive breasts. And I thought that's real fricking neat.

The game is just different and people don't know what to make of it. I saw a comment on vfeg about how UO gameplay is sending forth prebuilt units and having them auto everything. Uh you mean like Jagen, Sigurd, Marcus, Seth, Titania, Frederick, Camilla, Xander, Hawkeye, Harken, Vaida, Duessel, Miledy, Perceval, etc. x 200?

        Anonymous

        >and having them auto everything
Gross over simplification. The gambit system is really indepth. It's going to be way deeper once we get the full game and access to more abilities.

I'm curious when it'll be pragmatic to set an ability to only be used at night

It's an order of magnitude more complex than fire emblem because you have squads doing the same thing as individual guys in FE but in real-time which is why I give a shit about it at all

        Fire emblem is dogshit

          >Gross over simplification.
I agree but that's what people are saying

It's actually extremely similar. The only real difference is that in FE a squad is one unit and you manually move them each turn.

Uh, yeah, except I need to at least expend some energy thinking up a unit design that shores up weaknesses or maximizes strengths to accomplish a specific objective. I might even make changes every stage to accommodate for map specific circumstances. What do you do in fire emblem to accomplish this?

I think people are confused or just misinformed about how the battle preview works
You can literally organize your gambit stuff pre-fight and get different results. I've gone from say having a 53 damage dealt 43 damage taken to a 73 damage dealt 20 damage taken just by rearranging skill priorities before a fight

If you play like a tard especially on a low difficulty, you can conceivably never learn the mechanics and win because the game is not necessarily punishing. That's the issue. If you want to play the game well (not constantly get btfo and waste actions), you have to learn how things work. It's the same story in FE, a lot of players skirt by on all the included safety nets failsafes, never learning the calcs and advanced tech, I think that's what's happening here. If you never learn what's going on beneath the hood it'll all seem boring.

Uh, yeah, except I need to at least expend some energy thinking up a unit design that shores up weaknesses or maximizes strengths to accomplish a specific objective. >uhhhhh, I guess I'll equip a swordbreaker

You're being a little silly in the other direction. There are some simplistic FEs, and there are some complex ones that demand some thought. Conquest is the classic example. Try equipping just a breaker with no due diligence and watch your shit get rocked by a million seal and "yoink" skills.

Setting up a simple set of conditions for a soldier to either throw a javelin at a flyer or attack a column of two units is more complexity than I have ever encountered in any fire emblem ever

Are you going to sit here and tell me Conquest 25 (Ryoma) on Lunatic is just some nothing brain-off map, just because this game has column-based targeting? Because I can point out the same type of shit in CQ, Engage, and even 3H's with its gambits.
The game is honestly not even that hard to figure out, I've been crushing it on the highest difficulty. Boost AP/PP by any means necessary, mount rush the objective, program squad to spread damage efficiently, use items to patch up weaknesses in offense/defense. That's the game as of the demo.
I still enjoy it because you do have to think a little. Same is true in any good FE game.

That's just a strawman. People are larping because they can understand a few things from watching anime. If they actually had proper knowledge and not just "I have x hours of watching anime" they would be playing in full Japanese. That's not the same as saying 100% fluency.

            Anonymous

Nobody thinks your anime "knowledge" is sufficient for you to say what's good or bad translation. If you could read that would mean that you are not just someone who watched cartoons and then larps online as knowing Japanese because he recognizes common anime lines, you'd be someone who actually studied. In that case what you say on the subject is more likely to have any sort of actual foundation, even if you're not 100% fluent. 100% fluency was never implied, that was just your strawman.

Sharon is the cleric? That is not nearly enough damage. You basically have two tanks and a healer. You need to swap in some damage.

Yeah I figured cuz he started with Scarlet I'd put in Sharon till she came back but I guess not.

Scarlet is actually a blaster with a healing PP so not really the same as a cleric

Give him the Sanguine sword with a less than 50% HP proc too
            literally unkillable

The fact that he heals himself when attacking is pretty nuts, it's a lot of health if you get a kill with him. Set your conditions properly to ensure he's getting killing blows.

Pretty cool if you could make it all the way around the north you could attack the fort near the beginning from the other side.

I was sort of leaning PS5 buy now I think I might get Switch just to continue from my demo save.

    Definitely gonna promote Alain first
I am so fricking tired of needing to pair him with Josef just so he can get around the map in a timely fashion

      Anonymous

I just left him with his childhood friends and run a knight squad with Josef. 300 move is insane.

        Anonymous

A full footmen squad without a ranged support leader felt like ass, never doing that unless I run into a map with 50000 barricades

      Anonymous

I'm not thinking of priorities for promotion, but I am thinking of how goated this game is going to be to have every single unit be like Josef, e.g. having multiple ap/pp, multiple abilities and passives to program conditionals for, and to have squads with 5-6 units that all need to be set up like that.

I'm so excited I could squeal.

Pair him up with the witch. If the map is huge he can just teleport to Josef later.

Bruno was a really hard one for me until I realized I just wasn't using Josef enough. I kept thinking of him like an FE Jeigan instead of just a really good unit to use.

I'm absolutely STILL afraid they're gonna yoink Josef away from me in Post-Demo content

I removed him for this mission for the same reason. I feel like he's destined to die early on.

        You can do it anon

Thanks. I'll keep at it, 4 hours left on my demo. And by the time I finish it the PS5 demo will be out. And if I need it, the xbox after that. Assuming it gets on.

Also semi related, this is gonna be my first 500 topic. Should I make another or does someone else want to?

Nah keep using Josef, there's no reason NOT to. You keep him the whole demo

I'd rather other units soak the xp.

I don't know what the formula for XP sharing is but my Clive and Adel leveled up fine with Josef in the squad.

                Anonymous

                There's no exp sharing
Your exp just falls off a cliff if you kill shit that's like 3-4 levels lower than you but other than that you get full exp individually
So Josef could be in a squad of level 1s and they all level just fine

            Anonymous

I don't think he will even die in the full game. He starts falling off when your units are like lvl 11.

              Anonymous

              He's a support not a DPS
His attack growth is like non existent

            Anonymous

Plus the squad system means even if he's an XP black hole the guys in the unit with him can still benefit.

So do we know what performance is going to be like on Switch and PS4 Pro? Not sure which version to buy. I'd imagine it'd run better on PS4 Pro but I guess I have no idea.
