How incompetent is Sony?

Remember when the DS was announced, and immediately there were a thousand great ideas for a gaming touchscreen? Concepts and mockups flooded the internet, and some games released with even better ideas.

Then remember how the DS sold a billion units?

Then remember how Sony put a 100% useless trackpad on their controller? Not good enough to type with our select anything, it's only ever used as a large single button.

Then remember in 2020 when they released the PS5 and fricking did it again?

explain how they would put a touchscreen on their controller. The Wii U did that and flopped horribly

Literally just have the trackpad be a 3 inch phone screen. It would only be a vast improvement, no reason it would bring any of the wiius faults with it

The PSP was better in every single metric.
It was revolutionary in every aspect.
I even sold my DS and bought a PSP back in '06.
There was so much fun to be had and I even wrote my own hb.

2 decades later I still can't find any good game that isn't Dissidia

PSP was definitely a lot better in retrospect and I'm a zillennial who grew up with a DS and only knew one person with a PSP

Racing section should be repurposed to Driving/Racing/Vehicular, so Twisted Metal Head-On can have its spotlight and move Ace Combat in there too.

Sorry, but I'm not gonna do the Nintendo Switch wojak face if you show me god awful ports like valkyrie profile and absolute dumpster sequels of PS2 games like Jak and Daxter

PSP games where PS2 quality games on the go, that was the selling point, the NDS had Pokemon and Mario Kart DS, Pokemon being the sole reason Nintendo wasn't kill by the mid 2000s, deal is that companies kept heavily supporting both, for me that's all that matters.

DS sold well because it was the third party developers system of choice. The thing would have been a trillion times better without the dual screen/touch shit

And that's why the PSP sold 450k units and became the best selling console ever.

Not in retrospect but from contemporary PoV it was better in every metric and an amazing device.

I remember that for every good DS game where the touchscreen or dual screens added or were essential to the experience (Canvas Curse) there were three or four where it added nothing (Mario), felt like an afterthought that was forced on you (Dawn of Sorrow), or just actively made things worse the entire time (Zelda)

          >Zelda
That's true. After I bought a DS light+R4 for my wee sis she play Phantom Hourglass and I immediately asked her about the ts controls
          >Yeah it's just a gimmick and kinda dogshit. But hey we finally got a sequel to the WW story
We used to be big fans of WW.

You missed out big time. I learned so much with that little fricker back in the day.
Back when the Pandora battery came out I requested to be added to a list in my community and drove around to unbrick and flash other peoples PSPs. Met so many interesting folks that way.
Emulation was much better as well. The DS struggled even with 4th generation emulators and this wasn't solved until the Supercard became a thing.
It was also the only acceptable portable media player apart from DVD players.
Gameswise there was kino like the two God of War games, the GTAs. Even the Chinatown port was much better. Twisted Metal made a comeback. Katamari port was also decent.
Not to mention you could play Ridge Racer or NFS.
Sure when you compare them with the PS2 games they were kind of mediocre but it was just amazing too have access to real 3D games on the go.
If you didn't liked the liberary or sn0y stuff in general you could do so much other stuff.
Shame I never bought the camera attachment.

After reading your post, I now know that I really didn't miss out on anything
Emulatorwise, PSP emulators ran like shit. GBA was pretty damn good but not perfect. SNES was somehow better in NDS, never understood why but it did. I used my PSP exclusively for PS1 and GBA games
I guess that for someone that only played shit at home, the NDS was objectively better system. Shitlloads of unique games that still hold up today instead of shit that was outdated even back then, with the only gimmick that it is portable
Half minute hero, Ys, Megaman powered up still waiting for powered up 2 crapcom and dissidia were really the only games that I actually enjoyed. Metal gea Acid was the very first game that I pirated after hacking and it was a massive disappointment. I bought my PSP with liberty city stories and while that shit was fricking impressive, dear god it fricking sucked ass to play specially when I already had played an objectively superior alternative before

It's just a disappointing system all around

Even after burning some excess cash on a vita, I'm spending more time playing PS1 games than PSP titles.

            >I really didn't miss out on anything
The whole hacking/hb scene was much better but I guess you wouldn't know since you sound more like a user than a dev.
            >SNES was somehow better in NDS
Complete BS. maybe in the beginning but later the PSP could run almost anything @ full speed apart from Super FX stuff. Even the nullDC ran some what decent later on.
The DS always struggled to get a decent framerate in many SNES titles.
            >Ac!d
Many games in the beginning were kinda dogshit but the library got much better as the system got older.

nailed it, this was approximately my experience too, hacking all my friend's PSP's, watching new episodes of Naruto at church, ripping all my friend's UMD's to memory stick, watched Final Fantasy Spirits Within on one, played Battlefront online great game, played together at church and we took a group screenshot, good times.

it's staggering how many good games are on it too, and how many got rereleases, ports, remakes, on more powerful hardware. homosexuals on Ganker will say they dont know any games for it, but I could rattle off several dozen from the top of my head, if I pull up my collection there would probably be like 40-60 games.

also it's no joke that it was a smartphone before smartphones, you had pictures, music, movies, a webbrowser, carried that thing everywhere and got to play nigh homeconsole quality games. still blows my mind how good they look and how fun they were.

            >Multiplayer
Local MP was good on both consoles but the PSP reigned supreme in terms of online.
Much better QoL features and the netcode wasn't garbage.
            >Watching animu
One of my fondest memories ever is me and Nora -1st gf- watching KyoAni series like Suzumiya Haruhi, Lucky Star and later K-On.
I even downloaded the jap exclusive games.
All of them used to be mediocre mini game collections and were nothing special but it was good enough for fans.
She learned to read moorunes and was fairly proficient.
            >Battlefront
I remember when a friend showed to me and I was surprised that it ran so well.
Back then you essential had to host a LAN to play games like this.
Always chilled with the bros in the Mensa -Cafetaria- and played a couple of rounds.
Also Castlevania Remake, Syphon Filter, SOCOM, Ace Combat and The Warriors come to mind.

I later became a member of that Mensa for a rather short time period yes.
But a Mensa is simply the german version of an american HS/College cafetaria.
Usually only found on an university campus but certain form of schools got one as well. Especially in larger schools located in metropolitan areas.
I went to a Gesamtschule and they always got one b/c the whole concept is modelled after the american HS experience and thus very similar in nature.

    this didnt happen

initial reaction was: two screens? why? where's GBA2?
it was only at E3 when nintendo showed off the touchscreen and stylus in action with a bunch of neat demos that sentiment started to change

most people only realised DS would be a huge success when they played wario ware touched and finally saw the potential of the touchscreen, and others when the flood of unique games like nintendogs and brain training came out

    >Remember when the DS was announced, and immediately there were a thousand great ideas for a gaming touchscreen?
No because it never fricking happened, moron, in fact most devs went out of their way to minimize interacting with the touch screen as much as possible because people (rightfully) fricking hated shit like drawing Glyphs in DoS, there were only a select few games that made good use of the touchscreen gimmick, such as the EO games.

Regardless of how good the touchscreen was on the ds, there's zero reason for a touch pad instead of a screen on the dualshock. It could improve one percent of games and be left completely black for every other game, at a net cost of $.50 per unit.

Also, the DS barely did anything with internet, and could memorize 3 wifi logins. The ps4 can't remember 2. If you bring your ps4 back and forth from a friend house, you need to do wifi setup and network tests every single move. Absolutely moronic company

    >Remember when the DS was announced, and immediately there were a thousand great ideas for a gaming touchscreen?

No, I don't. I remember it largely being a shit gimmick most of the time and even Nintendo largely stopped giving a frick by the 3DS.
The only time it was ever useful was in real-time first person games, of which the DS had like 4.

The ps4 was sold as the best console of its generation and couldn't remember 2 wifi logins. I ran a game off a disk, then later bought it digitally. "can't run the game with disk data, please delete disk data and download digital data".

You'd think with a brain dead prompt like that there'd be a button to do that for you, but no, you need to go dig around in the storage and delete it yourself, then go back into the awful slow psn store and find the download button again. Absolute garbage us

And now they want us to buy the ps5? Like those design decisions aren't going to happen again?
