I liked Nioh, Nioh 2 was a big upgrade, and SoP was different but still really good.
Didn't play Wo Long because it sounded kinda wank from what I heard.
Will probably pick up RotR at some point if it's not wank like Wo Long.

Exactly my opinion although I love Nioh and Nioh 2. NGB was my favorite Xbox game.
I hope RotR delivers but I have my doubts. Will play after DD2.

They haven't really failed in a long time, so it'll probably be at least good. Don't like how this is being sold as more of an atmospheric thing and less videogamey personally however, I don't know how that being the focus will go since most of their highs in the last few titles have been primarily gameplay related and good set pieces rather than an overarching narrative.

For me they suck. They tack on systems for the sake of having more systems. They are only good in combat where they mostly rest on Itagaki's laurels and haven't made anything I completely prefer to NGB or NG2 since they keep piling on the garbage like loot, skill tree and levelling systems and stretched repetitious campaigns instead of coherent challenging experiences. High technical capability and no fricking taste is modern Team Ninja to me.

Team Ninja died after oatmeal cookie left. Nioh is shit. Ronin will just be your typical ubisoft slop with some shitty Nioh combat thrown in.

I looked at the first trailer and it was atrocious. Stranger of Paradise was dogshit and Wo Long Johnson looked like it would be the same though I never played it so I'd just decided to write this game off, but I looked at the last few gameplay trailers and I'm slightly optimistic about it and will probably get it regardless of reviews, but if this turns out to be complete garbage then I'm done with Team Ninja for good.

It should be good but I'm still playing it after Dragons Dogma 2. It looks like we now have styles instead of stances but they're functionally similar I think. There's some sort of ki pulse you can do when the bar fills up under your weapon but I don't know if it needs to be full or if you can do it before that and simply recover less ki. Each style has four skills on R1 but I don't know if they are locked to that style or if it's customizable to any degree. There's a lot of similar weapon types though and I do wonder if there's actually going to be significant distinctions. Western sabers, Chinese sabers, and katana are all just one-handed slashing swords so I hope this isn't a Wo Long situation again. The bayonet melee weapon looks pretty cool though. It's charged square is shoot so that should give it some distinction from the other weapons since it's a melee/ranged hybrid. They really should put out a demo.

      > It looks like we now have styles instead of stances but they're functionally similar I think
Except changing stance feels more immersive and tactile to me than switching styles in yakuza

        Anonymous

I don't know why you're bringing up yakuza when this is Ronin and made by a different dev. It looks sort of like stances from Nioh but I don't if there's fluxing between them or anything like that.

      Anonymous

So basically your own customized stance/moveset. I'm glad it's not just Nioh 3 so Nioh 3 can be its own things.

Love NG Black, like 2 and 3:RE
    Love Nioh 1 and 2
    Like SoP
Enjoyed Wo Long, but it was the most underwhelming of this list
See the pattern here, and the fact that they are going for the "Assasins Creed meets Ghost of Tsushima" angle, including an open world, and....I really want to like it because when they deliver, the combat is fricking great. But I dont have my hopes up, I bought all the games on my list day 1 (except NGB) but Im considering waiting for this one

I actually like XIV, VIIR, and XVI was at least a significant improvement on the XIII/XV era but Strangers of Paradise is fantastic. It and World of Final Fantasy are like the only spinoff titles worth a damn since like....Crystal Chronicles maybe?

It's alright. They tried to remove some stuff from Nioh to make it more like Souls but they still left enough stuff in to turn off Souls players AND Nioh players were missing some of that depth.

Nioh 1 was alright, DLCs were fricking bonkers but not in a good way.
Nioh 2 was excellent and an upgrade in every way that mattered (story was a complete joke compared to first)
SoP was fun even if definitely pretty jank
Wo Long was mediocre on arrival but DLC/updates have made me come around on it.

Not really psyched about this game. The supposed emphasis on story seems like a giant misstep, the lack of yokai/fantasy elements seems like it would hurt enemy variety and these are devs who already struggle hard with that, open world for devs who excel with smaller levels seems not great.
Might still get it but not anticipating a good reception as some people might think it'll be.

      Anonymous

I keep going back and forth on it. One day I'll be really critical on it and then the next I think I may have been too hard on it. I'm not thrilled about the realism either but I'm hoping the human enemy design is better than usual in order to make up for that. They're doing a bad job at really showing the game so it's still hard to get a full read on combat. Not crazy about the camera angle and open world either but maybe they'll make it work.

        Anonymous

The actual combat looks fun at least.
But the overall gameplay...it's clearly meant to be some kind GoT soulslike in a way that wouldn't appeal to anyone who likes GoT or soulslikes. Ubishit/muh realism combined with spongier enemies you can't just button mash against. Why they didn't take more inspiration from ER is baffling
Wouldn't be as worried if it didnt seem like this was a big risk. At the very least if anyone takes a big financial blow from this I hope it's mostly Sony and Team Ninja can dial back and go back to making niche games more in the style of Nioh/NG

I can't see every future game they make being open world like Ronin regardless of whether it succeeds or fails. It's been in development for like 7 years or something apparently. I think Nioh 3 or a Ninja Gaiden revival still could happen. I actually kind of want another SoP as well but that probably won't happen. It's still a questionable choice to release this the same day as DD2. It might hurt launch sales but that's just my prediction. I plan on getting both but I'm playing DD2 first. Not everyone is like me and will buy both right away though.

    >How is modern Team Ninja
Fantastic. Probably the best they've ever been. The fact that cookieface and the Team Ninja members who left to join him have only produced either mediocrities or flops means that the best talents stayed with Team Ninja.
Nioh 1 and 2 are 10/10s that I'll play until I either die or suffer some debilitative disease that renders me incapable of gaming, like arthritis or Alzheimer's disease.
Wo Long is a very solid 8/10.
Stranger of Paradise is a game that is difficult to assign a score to, because it has excellent music, combat, playstyle variety, enemies, and bosses (an even better boss roster than the Nioh games), but the visuals and graphics are atrocious, and the technical performance is even worse.
I don't give a shit about DOA6. Though really, I have never have given a shit about the DOA games. The combat in those games look so weak and floaty compared to its 3D peers (Tekken and Soul Calibur).
    >and do you trust them?
Yes. The only thing I don't trust them with is good optimization. They really need to talk with Durante (the guy who does Falcom PC ports) and pay him to do PC ports for their games. Wo Long and Stranger of Paradise are some of the worst PC ports I've played in ages. The Nioh games are okay in terms of optimization, but they could easily be a 100 times better.

As for Rise of the Ronin, I don't know enough about it to know whether or not it'll be good. Sure it has Yasuda directing it, but this is an open world game, and he's never done open world games before. And open world games, by the very definition of the genre, are always cancerous titles that waste the player's time with pointless filler and bloated maps. But who knows? Maybe the combat/enemies/bosses/gameplay will be so good that it'll make its open world nature less cancerous.

Nioh was good, Nioh 2 was great. I never played SoP but from what I've heard most people liked it. Wo-Long was good, but not quite up there with Nioh. As for Rise of the Ronin, it looks kind of bad to be honest. It looks like a copy paste of GoT, a painfully mediocre game. I'll probably get it if it comes to pc, but I can't say I am excited about it.

Current Team Ninja is great. Loved Nioh 1 & 2. I enjoyed Stranger of Paradise and Wo Long, although I care not for world in Final Fantasy or the Romance of 3 Kingdoms. DOA5 and 6 were fun fighters, but releasing DOA6 in 2019 was a mistake. I think if they released it this year it would have been a success as there is backlash against “woke”. Soleil’s output has been the definition of mediocre to bad, and Itagaki seems to be running scams and reminding people that he made DOA and NG reboot. I’ve already pre-ordered Rise of the Ronin, but I hope they do NG4 after this.
