What's happening is they couldn't be bothered to make the landscape of a planet continuous. It's simpler to just generate different instances without having to worry about how they connect to each other. So you can land in spot A or spot B, and each of those spots may be 100km wide or whatever, but you will never be able to walk from spot A to spot B.

I remember Todd said you were only limited to a certain area, but it does strike me as incredibly against the spirit of a game like this. At the very least make diegetic so the player runs out of oxygen or energy or something instead of a harsh boundary like this.

Because you CAN go everywhere on the planet. The system works in a weird way as in you can only explore the region around where you landed. If you wanna go in that place in the pic, you have to land there.
I don't really care about starfield but I just want to say I like the way Elder Scrolls does invisible walls. I think its perfectly fine to say this 1 region is where the game is set and you cant go any further but you can see other regions outside the map. Its much better than the stupid shit like almost all GTA games being big islands.
