I've burned out by eo2hd, what a piece of shit of a game.
shoulda played the untolds
I felt that way at the start of 2 but eventually it sort of went away, then came back at the end. It really is the worst etrian game.
Same to be honest. I played through all of EO1 with few issues but EO2 feels 10x worse to me, especially in the first stratum.
I bought the jap physical version for the switch because I like to own my things but when I booted it I realised I cant read jap
I bought the Jap version because it was cheaper even with the shipping. I finished EO1 so far. Wasn't even that hard to read. It was actually my first time playing EO too, and I finished it on Expert difficulty (that's the original DS difficulty, right?)
It was fun for a while. But I rather finish my backlog of games
>But I rather finish my backlog of games
You never will tho.
I just got to the second stratum. Seems like a bit of a difficulty spike so I'm going slow.
Midway through EO3. Thinking about how to subclass my party.
still trying to finish untold 2 story mode
not playing it. lusting over the brown shopkeeper
Beat the first 3 strata in EO3 and then lost interest. After hearing so many good things about this series for so long I was pretty disappointed.
Beat EOIIHD the week the collection came out. I'm currently on the 5th stratum in V and I should be hyped, but my investment on the game is beginning to run dry.
Playing Dungeon Travelers right now but I'll pick EO back up after.
Played about 30 hours of EO1HD and I gotta say it's pretty over hyped. I had way more fun with SMTII and if... I do enjoy the art style of EO a lot though.
1 and 2 are by far the worst EOs, the hate against their untold versions is by some really dedicated autists
The series started getting good by 3, before that the class design was incredibly boring
I thought these games were supposed to be the pinnacle of dungeon crawlers and you're telling me the first two are worse than counterparts in their genre from the SNES? What a waste of time.
3 has the most boring class design in the series though, worse than 1 and 2, its saved by the bandaid that is subclassing
1 is okay for what it is. The class design is kind of simple, but not overly so. 3 even without subclassing has some pretty weird options on plenty of classes. 2 is where they floundered the most. The design feels almost reactionary to a fault. Too many good, cheap skills in 1? Jack up the skill cost so some are unusable. These classes were good? Kneecap them. These classes weren’t as good? Turn them into gods. And there’s so many trap options it’s absurd.
>filtered
they're bad m8
indeed Ganker is bad at games
at least Ganker is good at showing me which games to avoid
If you think that liking SMT if... more than EO1 is me being filtered then you may need to reconsider your definition. If... is vastly more niche than EO
It went from Nintendo handhelds to a platform with over 4 decades of history in the dungeon crawler genre. People who actually know dungeon crawlers are playing these games now and realizing that they're just more overhyped nintendie slop.
This, people tend to overestimate the quality of console exclusives.
People discovering just how overrated the gameplay is, it's barely passable as an RPG. Anybody would get bored. Etrian Odyssey has a unique cool aesthetic with great music and barely serviceable gameplay. It's why the series sales stagnated towards the end because new games were about as superficially new as a 2014 to 2015 car model might be.
I'll keep saying this series desperately needs better combat and you do that by drastically increasing the consequence of effects, giving more enemies more mechanics, and adding customization to party members. You could just do that and keep the dungeons the same then you'd already have a 10x better game. I bought multiples of EO3 and EO4 but the series unironically regressed with the Untold games. Nexus showed that the only way to make the gameplay better was to add effects mechanics and customization but it was only a mashup not really a new game. Really hoping EO team makes these improvements for the Switch game and doesn't release another barebones dull slog. Bonus if they add actual roleplaying mechanics to dungeon exploration both to the dungeon itself and attached to your party composition selection
>You could just do that and keep the dungeons the same
Please no, I played like half of EO3 and every dungeon floor felt like the first floor of a proper dungeon crawler. This game desperately needs to come up with something to spice up dungeons that isn't just endless variations of big overworld enemies that move in a predictable pattern at the same speed as you. In EO3 it took them until like floor 10 or something to introduce damage tiles. The second stratum used auto movement tiles as glorified one way walls. The overly basic dungeon design is a way bigger problem with this series than the serviceable Dragon Quest combat. Wizardry never had good combat and the games were still good.
Personally, I’d say the combat itself isn’t where it has problems. Of course, it can always get better, and earlier games are definitely simpler, but they always lean into adding more sorts of surprises, types of skills and mechanics. It’s also one of the only dungeon crawlers that let physical classes have some fun, which is a bit of a shame. If there’s anything I fault it on, it’s dungeon related stuff. The layouts themselves aren’t bad and lean towards a puzzle element, which is okay by itself. At the very least, it works fine. But it could stand to be more brutal in some aspects, and they emphasize battles so much that you will never take dungeon related skills because they hinder your combat ability too much. EO5 sort of felt like they tried something with some race skills that help in dungeons being tied to stat boosts, but it wasn’t really enough.
Playing through EO1 on expert, grinding is painfully slow. Just got to the 3rd stratum and my gathering squad can barely make it to any node without an encounter even through maxed stalker. Main party gets encounters every 3 steps. It's kinda tedious since auto battle is 100% dogshit but FOEs and bosses just evaporate but it's a very comfy casual game to play that doesn't take a lot of engagement
gathering kind of sucks in EO1 since enemies drop most of the common drops already so it's not that important overall. The best gather point to farm cash is close enough to usually reach without getting into a fight too.
If you don't mind grinding them a bit get ambush on all of them since it stacks and can give you a 100% preemptive chance so you can pretty safely run from each fight.
Yeah unfortunately there's random quests to gather everything from floor X, like b13f which has a gather point pretty far from any shortcuts. The problem is mostly that grinding a squad for just gathering is super tedious and without levels their escape chance is miserably low
you can hold off on the quests until later for the most part. Once you can get equipment from the later stratums your gather party with the 100% ambush chance can start clearing fights to level up easier. If you really want to grind them find somewhere you can clear fights in one round, set up auto walk, and put a clamp or rubber band on the A button and walk away for a while.
the games are mostly just tedious and boss fights come down to whether or not you know which skills are traps, since the game doesn't tell you numbers for anything helpful. the random encounters you can just hold a through once you get a few levels in. Ganker loved (and still does) to pretend these games are super hardcore and better than every other jrpg even though it falls into the same trap as it's contemporaries where ultimately you can just grind for an hour and out-stat whatever is walling you if you really wanted to. they're still good but get a lot of unwarranted praise from troglodytes who jerked themselves moronic to himukai
The only thing annoying about some of the earlier games is that some things weren't very clear on how they worked. For example, EO2 on the DS was my first game in the series. And based on Allslash's description, you'd think if there was a single enemy, it'd hit that enemy 2-4 times and you rush it, only to realize it sucks after it only hits them once. Or you take Regenall for the War Magus, only to realize it only heals 1 HP per point. 2 is definitely the most suspect in that category though.
>she
I finished 1 HD and loved all 80 hours of it. I started 3 HD and didn't even finish the first floor. I'm trying DT2 now but not feeling it either.
>Started up EO3, in Molten Caves and having a good time
>Also started up EO1, only a few floors in but it's the same good old game, this time I'm going in w/o a Medic
>Want to also start up a EO2 file but I really want to use the EO1 clear save import password feature this time around; I never had the chance on the DS since I own a European copy of EO1
Life is tough.
3. On 3rd strata. Navigating lava is kind of a slog. Also, most of the gameplay is just grinding for your numbers to grow bigger.
out of all the 3 in the HD collection which one is best for just starting out or do II go emulate 4
3 or 4. 1 and 2 have remakes that might come on PC one day and they lack some of the QoL stuff that even 3 had.
Ricky?
Im on the 19th floor in EO1, I like the game but its taking a while with other life commitments. I will say though the c**t going 'youshouldnt like the labyrinth of X games because theyre auto attack spam' was clearly a lying homosexual as EO is no different so far. I personally find the dungeons a bit meh in exploring due to the limitations of the map having to have empty squares seperate a wall or corridor rather than simply having a wall.
Given what all you guys have said across the other threads I'll probably like EO3 the best and Im enjoying EO1 but it isnt what anons shitposted it to be.
I wonder what kind of tank-class EO:Next should have.
I am torn between Hoplites and Fortress for my favourite tank class.
I love how fortress can eat a dragon breath and end up with more tp
Still in Stratum 3 of EO1HD. Full time job, being a husband and dad don't leave me with the time for gaming that I used to have.
Finished all of them back in the DS era when I was a lazy uni student though so that's fine.
