+Free: Real free, Richard Stallman free, you never pay a dollar for it and they don't get a dime from you using it
+Open source: What you see is what you get, no hidden telemetry bullshit, also means plugins and modifications by the community are very abundant
+Very lightweight: It's 25MB and almost completely portable (The only real hitch is file directories for projects but theoretically you could do it all within a portable drive)
+Seamless: You can dick around with 2D and 3D scenes alongside editing the actual code without any interruptions, even debugging is incredibly fast
+Popular in the court of public opinion: Unity shit the bed hard so a lot of people are batting for Godot now, so it's easy to grift by just saying "Made in Godot!"

-Scripting is shit: While it has a lot of cool features like signals and such, it has a proprietary language called GDScript which is basically Python for morons so it's not very translatable to other engines or vice versa. You CAN finagle using C# instead but it's very much a band-aid solution even with official support.
-Incredibly fricked shaders: Despite being in the year of our lord 2023 you can't actually smoothly load shaders in real time. Say you wanted an enemy to burst into flames when they died - that will ALWAYS hitch up the game as it has to load in the effects. You can set up a loading screen to preload these effects and keep them hidden but that's a band-aid solution.
-Shitty documentation: There's a lot of crazy shit you can do with Godot, and most of it isn't even shown in the documentation as it's mostly function summaries with very little detail, and some just outright have no entries. You find out about it from people who were experimenting with it and documented it themselves.
-Asset issues: While you do have a built-in 3D modeler, things like levels and geography are things you're gonna have to do yourself, and it's awful every time
-Demographics: The community's full of troons. Enough said.

Added work for something that shouldn't even be a problem. And what you suggested is just a more detailed version of what I said - it's not a proper solution, it's a band-aid solution.

The problem is shaders change depending on the lighting.
          > Player turns on a light
          > Everything flickers as the shaders recompile
You have to put every shader in every combination of lighting conditions that you expect to use for them to be ready.
If that wasn't bad enough, I'm pretty sure if you swap the lighting too fast, it CANCELS the shader compilation, so you can't just turn the lights on and off really fast to get all the shaders compiling, you have to wait for them to get done, which you can't do because there's no API to see if shaders are compiling in the background.
There really needs to be a method of saving what shader variations are needed and compiling them at the start.

Wait a minute, this is the first time I've heard about this.
Do you mean to tell me if I make a single Dynamic light that rotates across the sky to act as the sun light in my day/night cycle, that the shaders will recalculate every frame, and there is no way around it?

              Anonymous

A shader should have parameters declared as "uniforms" in the shader code, which are bound to variables in your program. Any dynamic lighting would be implemented using a uniform array of light positions that can be changed at runtime, so it should never involve recompiling a shader.

                Thanks for clarification!
Forgive my ignorance. When does a shader need to recompile at runtime?
Something as simple as changing an RGB value or sliding a threshold on a shader?

Good post. I vouch for everything here except maybe "shitty documentation". I don't know what people expect, for the computer to download all the info into your brain? There was never anything I couldn't find easily so idk what "secrets" aren't documented.

          Anonymous

          >I don't know what people expect, for the computer to download all the info into your brain?
It's more that there are entire chapters of functions that literally just list that they exist without even saying what they do. It's frustrating because this should've been something handled before adding more features. Explain what you've got before you get yourself more shit. I'm not asking for "secrets" or whatever, I can figure that shit out on my own when I know what exactly it is I'm looking at.

          >how is this bad?
          1. Devs moving over to Godot need to learn an entirely new language (or jump through hoops for C#)
          2. Devs who want to move on from Godot have zero experience in more common languages, they're limited to Godot. Expanded perspective of languages is what separates alright devs from good ones.
          >nice meme
It really isn't. Any time I put up a question on their git or stackexchange or, and I say this in nauseated tone, reddit the best answers are from thigh-high sock-wearing hairy sex pests. Trannies love fringe nerd shit and Godot is within that fringe right now. I won't deny their efficacy in wasting more time than I have on figuring out problems that boggle me, but they're still creeps and it makes interaction with the larger "community" (which is a necessity for an open source project since the best support will rarely be dev-side, especially with Godot where they're more busy with upgrading over fixing) irksome.

            Anonymous

Different anon, new "dev" here: Isn't it true that learning one language makes it far easier to learn another? I took a course in javascript and css and I was able to apply even those disparate skills to gdscript so I figure learning something with gdscript as your only basis wouldn't exactly be that hard. Surely?

              Anonymous

              >Isn't it true that learning one language makes it far easier to learn another?
It's easier to go from another language to GDScript than it is to go from GDScript to the more common languages, but all GDScript will really teach you is things like order of execution, syntax, and some key vocabulary. But it's like saying you learn to bake from making pancakes - sure, some similar factors are there, but it's so far removed you're gonna lack a lot of savviness and will have to unlearn certain behaviors to the point you might as well start fresh. In addition, the actual formatting of GDScript is quite different from the more popular languages (In particular bracket and space usage). And even then, moving into GDScript, especially if you're porting a project over is incredibly frustrating.
This doesn't make GDScript a bad language either, mind you, I fricking love signals and I love how easily deployable scripts can be in Godot, but it sets up bad habits it really shouldn't. That being said, it's still better for learning than blueprints (And there is a fun plugin that lets you visualize signals so that it retains the Blueprint "format" if you're super super green to gamedev and came from UE4/5).

Would you say it's worth putting up with Unity's bullshit given that I'm just trying to learn the process of making vidya as well as apply and expand on them minuscule amount of programming knowledge I currently have?
I always figured it'd be easier to do so on Unity than Godot coz of the issues you've mentioned with their proprietary scripting language but also there just seemed to be a LOT more support/documentation/fricking google results for unity dev shit when I last looked.
And given that fact, I can only imagine the current gen GPTbots have an easier time giving decent starting points for doing X or Y and I can take it from there, maybe ask clarifying questions and whatnot and actually get something usable.

Nah bro. Anyone can learn a new language and adapt if they already know the concept of it. That is why Python is considered the standard go-to for newcomers. So the idea that you are limited because of GDScript is just moronic.

I have decided to make a spin off prequel from my current 3rd person post apoc monster girl fricking puzzle game, to something smaller and easier to bust a demo out for in 3-4 months.
You'll play as a dude forced to take part in a conflict between two of the key in universe characters, via a tower defense style game using paranormal creatures, hosted by a demon.
You'll be able to choose a hero unit(who you can romance/frick while playing matches and they aren't on the field) or you can opt to spend time with defeated hero units from the other players, raping and mind breaking them to give them debuffs on respawn.
Eventually, mind broken hero units will turn on their players if summoned to the board.

An hypnosis simulation game. Its very sandbox-like, allows free fondling and encourages you to experiment with different techniques. Takes a lot of inspiration from the golden era flash H-games.
The process is gradual, and you get different types of scenes based on what thoughts you add, delete or modify, and multiple endings depending on what mental state you left her in.
Not sure if people would still find such a game interesting, though.

Since this is the closet we have to a game dev thread on Ganker right now i'll ask here: When making textures for ps1 style game should i first draw them in what ever resolution i prefer and then downscale to 256x256 or draw them in that size from the start?

      Anonymous

You can always downscale with little or no downside. But upscaling is a different story. Don't assume you're always going to want 256x256, you might change your mind later. So make them in hi-res, then downscale. It's safer.

Turned out to be fine sans a hydrocele which they can't do much about. Ended up learning from a friend in orthopedics that all my pains indicated I somehow fricked up every single goddamn muscle in my groin and it's gonna take a couple weeks to heal.

WHY THE FRICK DOES GODOT NOT HAVE CONES INTRINSICALLY

      >How is your game going, anon?

I can do mediocre 3d animation and I'm also a mediocre coder.

I always progress, then scrap a project entirely when I either finish making a mechanic I think is cool, OR when I hit a roadblock.
      .
This time, I made character animations till the point I was coding how the combat transitions and hit boxes work. THAT SHIT IS PAINFUL. Scrapped that project, I'll probably try again later and make further progress.

A good programmer could make a soulslike in Godot over a weekend.

Cones geometrically are useful for certain areas of effect such as vision/detection areas. The only truly triangular mesh you have is a prism which offers no such benefits. I had to model my own goddamn cone and import it.

Godot is arguably better for 2d anyway, and with the recent nosedive of unity corporate I think it would be reasonable to at least experiment to godot for such a small project like this.

Not even a question, Godot. Godot is literally a 2D engine that got 3D support, it's probably my favorite choice for any 2D game.

Thanks anons, I'll do it in Godot then.

your lack of historic knowledge is baffling, godot was originally a 3d engine. it ended up primarily being used for 2d due to the low budgets and primitive hardware being targeted by the studios using it before it was released publicly.

I was using quickcast keys for the spells, but it has a radial menu
jump, attack, rewind and turbo have their own buttons

so like 5 main inputs with casting, but a few extra inputs for finer stuff (spell menu, double tap up/down for a dodge/lunge with iframes, crouch slides, climbing, open a map, etc etc). As long as "rewind" replaces "shield" for most games it avoids too much complexity

If I remember well the videos of that one autist completely rewriting Mario64's engine for max performance & quality, the N64 can handle up to 8 source of directional light, allowing to simulate point lights if you are willing to tweak the "directional light" value accordingly.

I got a Godot question maybe someone can answer.
So rather than importing a model, you can use a .blend file and create a new inherited Scene, and it works flawlessly, and it is nice because any changes I make in blender instantly updates in godot. The issue is that I have a lot of bones in my control rig which could cost preformance, and all the bones are in the Inherited scene, and I can't seem to remove them from my inherent scene "Alert! Can't operate on nodes the current scene inherits from!". Is there any way around that or will I have to export and import the model like I would with Unity?

I've learned C# for Unity years ago but my coding was shitty spaghetti code so I wanted to learn fresh the right way with Godot's GD Script. From what I understand however, C# is still a better language than Godots native one. Is that true or am I worrying about nothing?

            Anonymous

C# is a bit faster yes, but you can generally do everything with GDscript and performance is still ok as long you don't make Yandere dev levels of bad code.

i use GDscript for everything until i find performance critical code and then convert that to C++, Godot supports C++ which is as fast you can get without getting to assembling/microcode homosexualry.

The avg age in Italy to move out of the home is 30. And it's higher in some other countries. But the moveout age overall has dramatically increased because of all the darkness everyone's been freaking out about for several years now. Hell, the most common theme for adults now seems to be getting their parents moved in with them once they're too old to be assed. Being a neet is no excuse though. Learn yourself a skill. Apply yourself. Stop being lazy.

The Tiled program is still better then using Godot's tile implementation, even in 4.1. There's an importer for Tiled that works in 3.5.

It's a game about murdering other schoolgirls in gruesome and/or stupid ways without getting caught.
Even if it was done in silly animu style and just following classic tropes, it didn't need anything sexual for most platforms to not want to be associated with it.

Yandere *are* mostly an highschool trope tho.
Not that they never get written in settings with older people, but most of it rely on the character being a dumb teenager that can't handle her first burst of hormones nor handle proper social interactions.

I gave up over a decade ago. I was bankrolling a ww1 game with my personal income and later crypto earnings. But things just didn’t work out.

The release date was scheduled on July 31st 2014. The centenary of the Great War. But not only would we have not made the deadline. We had nothing to show after nearly two years in development. A single unfinished map. With missing textures. And assets ripped from other games. The devs I hired were completely inexperienced. The game was just not shaping up properly.

Sad really. I had some grand plans too. It was very ambitious. Over two dozen factions represented. America, The British Empire(with all its dominions), France, Germany, Russia, AustriaHungary, The Ottomans, Italy, Japan, Serbia, Greece, MonteBlack, Belgium, Portugal, Bulgaria, the Arab states, and so many more that I’ve forgotten. I had plans for hundreds of unlocks. That included weapons, (requestable)vehicles and attachments. Worldwide theaters of war. From the trenches of Western Europe, to the open fields of the Eastern front. The sands of Arabia to the shores of Gallipoli. The jungles of Africa to the Alpine mountains. The oceans of the Pacific to the coasts of Asia.

But alas. I was a fool and wasted my money. I spent over $100,000 by the time I pulled the project. I know I got scammed. And that is why I learned not to trust online and offshore companies. I truly believed that I could crank out a triple A experience on the cheap. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. I didn’t even want to charge money for it. I just wanted to make the definitive World War 1 experience.

Also I had plans for single player. I wanted to play as historical figures of note. One of those people would have been Private Adolf Hitler in the German campaign.

      >. I wanted to play as historical figures of note. One of those people would have been Private Adolf Hitler in the German campaign.
Should start with that. But don't reveal the name, start him with more facial hair, grimy trench warfare etc, then when you reach the gas mask section, he shaves it to the classic tooth brush moustache before putting on the mask.

Actually I had it all planned out. You would start off as a silent protagonist in the German recruitment office. After giving up a letter from the Kaiser allowing you to enlist in spite of your austrian citizenship. The recruiter would shake your hand and welcome you to the Deutches Heer and refer to you as Herr Hitler. I wanted you to know who you were playing from the very get to. Of course you would relive many of hitler’s moments from his life during that time. The gas attack. The artillery bombardments. The running messages back and forth between the trenches. And occasionally you would get to play as secondary protagonist Manfred Von Richthofen aka the Red Baron in the sky above the trenches. With even more mainline missions being broken up and punctuated as tertiary protagonists took over, like a fireman who’s using the worlds first flamethrowers in the trenches and as a submarine captain hunting cargo ships in the pacific. Eventually as the submarine captain the final mission would be sinking the Lusitania. And as the Red Baron after you were shot down. You’d play as Hermann Goring.

Oh wow it’s been ten years now. I can’t believe I remembered all that. It’s like it’s permanently stored in my mind.

*As in, restart dev on your own as a small gamejam sized slice of ww1

I have zero talent or skill in computers. I was just bankrolling the whole project myself. I don’t think people would trust a complete technologically inept moron like me with their money. Also the world has gotten a lot more political now. Any attempt at portraying hitler in an unbiased and analytical light before all the national socialist stuff; would cause great controversy. And liable my project and person to character assassination and harassment.

Honestly if I had the money. I’d do it! I’d work on it in secret and not tell people the contents of the single player experience. I’d wait for them to figure it out on their own.
