On what? Get a currency tab, 4 or so normal stash tabs, and a couple premiums, and it's "playable". You don't need trash like the card set tabs, most rewards from them are trash just to bloat your inventory.
That's the problem. Newcomers won't be able to differentiate between good drops and bad drops, so a card tab, unique, essence and fragment tab is more or less required. So they don't frick themselves over. If you are experienced, of course, you can get along with the bare minimum. But at that point, you will have more than that anyway. The game is horribly designed.

I tried PoE after playing the D4 beta and it felt laggy. Also the skills looked outdated and felt slow to cast. I'd rather try hard in D4 because its nicer overall.

Hopefully 0. I really tried to like PoE, but the only way to "play" is buying the exact shit you need and finishing the league, while solo self found is near unplayable due to abysmal drop rates.
In other words, the literal only way to play is to buy a bunch of currency from chang and vasili so you can skip the gameplay portion of the game.
If you play solo self found you're meant to make the drops work for you and the build be centered around them, not going for a build and trying to find the specific min-maxed gear that works for it

I'm here to enjoy a game, I want my character to get stronger by killing shit and getting decent loot, I don't want to just soullessly trade for the exact shit I want, and PoE gives you no real options other than that.

Neither. I played through PoE and did maps for a bit till I got bored and moved on. Also played through Diablo 2 (original then resurrected) and 3 then played endgame a bit till I got bored also. I just finished playing through Grim Dawn and Ghostlore. I'm playing Inquisitor Martyr now. Then i'll play Last Epoch and Wolcen.
I'll just wait to see what happens with Diablo 4 for now and decide on it when it goes on a cheap enough discount. That's what I did with d2r and 3. If it turns out to be too much of a prudish homosexual game then i'll just skip it.
