How much do you care about authenticity? Do you use original hardware with a CRT or just emulators? I've seen people her saying that you need incandescent lightbulbs to play these older games, that seems excessive to me

Emulators on a PC with a CRT TV hooked up to it.
Doesn't really matter as long as it plays like "original hardware", if I wouldn't know, I couldn't tell them apart anyways.
Just makes it more convenient.
You people make it sound like hooking up a TV to a computer is easy
It's a buggy mess requiring custom drivers and can break both your PC and Crt
It is. DP to VGA adapter and a VGA to RGB SCART or BNC cable you can buy online. Both together won't set you back more than 40 bucks, of course cheaper if you DIY though. All you need to do is delete the 31kHz and higher modes with CRU for only the DP adapter and add 15kHz modes instead, fire up RetroArch with CRT SwitchRes and play whatever you want, doesn't take more than 10 minutes and you'll never have to touch it again.
>VGA to RGB SCART
if its not composite its not authentic
I mean you're right of course, never claimed it was. It's actually better! :^)
Benefits of composite without the negatives while running over RGB, having all the composite related effects without any of the interference or quality loss.
Fricking emulator gays breaking reality
Based
You can use shaders to get composite effects. There are even shaders to blend dithering without fricking up the overall image quality.
>Nintendo Enterntainment System
>Enterntainment
Pls no bully. The picture is from a while ago.
Is there a way for me to play over composite?
I don't emulate the games on PC.
HDMI > RF converter. Just werks lol (Also does AV, you have to have RA displayed at 16 9 for it to resmush it to 4 3 using HDMI, anything hooked in the AV part works perfectly)
>HDMI > RF converter
Doesn't sound very based, what kind of delay do you get?
Emulation pc + CRT.
Better than the real thing, i haven't taken my gen 3/4/5/6 consoles out in over a decade.
It's a piece of piss and you can fricking not "break" your tv or your CRT.
Emulators have composite built into them these days as an option.
I grew up with RGB coz i'm not a third worlder
Doesn't work for arcade games that require groovymame for correct speed playback.
Why don't you sell your consoles?
>noo you're not allowed to save things for nostalgia purposes
>It's a piece of piss and you can fricking not "break" your tv or your CRT.
It can break your CRT TV if you feed it incompatible frequencies, specially for extended periods.
>Doesn't work for arcade games that require groovymame for correct speed playback.
Works perfectly for GroovyMAME at correct speed. SwitchRes works for both RA and GroovyMAME. This solution supports all the same modelines as CRT Emudriver.
I don't know why you would think it doesn't.
I like it's always two sides real hardware on crt VS emulators on lcds
Yet emulators on crt is often overlooked but probably the best of both world
"I couldn't tell them apart anyways."
I played Super Mario World on BSNES and SNES9X recently, and I could tell a difference. Feels slightly less responsive than the real-deal, just gross. The odd thing is that Nintendo's official emulators feel fine in comparison.
Probably misconfigured. Specially since you said the "official emulators" don't, since Nintendo literally uses the same shit.
>Probably misconfigured
Don't have to spend 20 minutes configuring shit with the actual hardware. On top of that, I'd have to take shitty guesses on what "feels right", frick that.
You do you, each method has its pros and cons.
I have literally less than a single NES frame of latency doing NES this way on a real CRT TV and wireless controller in RetroArch, with perfect sound.
>I've seen people her saying that you need incandescent lightbulbs to play these older games, that seems excessive to me
Pretty sure those people are just shitposting
Anyhow, I use emulators because it's more convenient and cheap. Used to play them on a CRT but now I play on an OLED. I like to think about developer's intentions and how they affect the design of a game I'm playing but chasing authenticity for its own sake feels like weird escapism. Do these people watch movies through a projector?
>Do these people watch movies through a projector?
Different things, anon
This. Most movies had home releases made for home watching on CRT TVs or panels.
Meanwhile sure, there's still old movie reels that only exist as those reels, indeed those are best viewed like they are on actual projectors.
And how is that different from retro vidya getting rereleases on flat panels? Neither are "authentic".
Not quite. There is a market for people who watch movies on huge projectors. My point was that just about every hobby has its autistic rabbit hole wrt "authenticity".
Not anon, but those projectors are not the same as film reel projectors. You picture is no different than a panel in most aspects and characteristics.
Oh for sure, didn't mean to imply that they were. But a lot of motivation behind buying them is to capture that feeling of watching a movie in theaters.
Wrong on so many points. Learn the basics about filmography before stating your beliefs about filmography.
>no argument
You are correct. Suggesting that you reading a book or take a course, is not an argument. But you will be enriched beyond your imagination if you left the echo chamber.
>So you mean, something that you didn't say.
no.
>>So you mean, something that you didn't say.
>no.
You said "Different things, anon" in
is:
>Wrong on so many points.
so movies and interactive videos games are the same? got it
film·og·ra·phy
/filˈmäɡrəfē/
noun
a list of films by one director or actor, or on one subject.
Sounds like you're one who's wrong here bucko
u no wat he meant
>Do these people watch movies through a projector?
If you mean projectors like
then sure, they are actually really popular
I used to have a home cinema setup like that almost 20 years ago when I still watched movies
While it's true movies are made for film projectors, they were also filmed with CRT TVs in mind because they knew that most people would end up watching movies on them later on. A lot of old movies actually look better on CRTs because the colors pop more and the slight blur helps hides the imperfections. Plus they don't need to be upscaled.
This doesn't apply for modern movies of course, but 99% of them are pozzed garbage not worth watching anyway.
>they were also filmed with CRT TVs
That's mostly direct to VHS/DVD budget films and normal series.
Films were almost always filmed with cinema projectors in mind, that's why they have special cameras for that, they just get remastered for home usage for TVs.
>A lot of old movies actually look better on CRTs because the colors pop more
Modern TVs have definitely better color accuracy and gamut.
>and the slight blur helps hides the imperfections.
That is true for low resolution content, but that was mostly as mentioned series or direct to VHS/DVD movies. Actual "resolution" of recorded movies is far above even 4k on good film, hence why we have 4k remasters of 40 years old movies.
>Plus they don't need to be upscaled.
Movies don't need to be upscaled, refer to the above. They look good even on a 600 inch cinema screen.
>This doesn't apply for modern movies of course, but 99% of them are pozzed garbage not worth watching anyway.
What you said doesn't apply to pretty much any movie made in the past 50 years.
I seriously thought this was a parody post
I hope so
How are you watching this movie on a CRT?
Dvd player?
Very important. I think N64 controllers are uncomfortable but using anything else makes it feel like an emulator. Really prefer a real console on crt, next a clone console on a crt is still decent. Lately been using an A500 mini on a crt which is pretty good. Emulating 2D games on a pc is mainly to test they are working well if I apply a patch but I'll do a long session if it has a good crt filter.
The issue is shitty lcd's. In a few years OLED at 120 hz will allow black frame insertion on real consoles at 4k with a good filter and low lag. Just use a crt until that happens.
>In a few years OLED at 120 hz will allow black frame insertion on real consoles at 4k with a good filter and low lag.
We already have that... I run RetroArch on a C1 at 4k 120Hz with BFI and CRT filters, increase over using a CRT is like 5ms which I mitigate with run-ahead.
I'm sure you could do something similar with a good scaler, right?
There's literally official USB N64 controllers.
>Just use a crt until that happens.
I'll always use a CRT. Even in the best case with filters it's just imitation, even if hard to tell apart, plus it does not help with nostalgia.
I watched Shrek on vhs yesterday
>he doesn’t host film screenings in his backyard during summer nights
ngmi
Original hardware for 3d games, emulation for 2d games. And a crt of course. And i pirate everything, not paying hundreds of dollars just to play a game.
It doesn't matter. I used to play games with my friend on his mini tv. My TV had a visual problem that mirrored the top of the screen. I played the games and had a blast with them. Honestly I think people get too hung up on this shit
>I've seen people her saying that you need incandescent lightbulbs to play these older games
If true it was either a troll or a non-person
I try to be as authentic as I can. I do have an old retro duo system from lazier times that's hooked up to my CRT still but I have my original systems hooked up as well.
I used to care. But not anymore. I play on original hardware and carts. But linked up to a flatscreen. I had 3 CRTs die on me in the space of a year.. I have it linked up with a chingdogger upscaler. I do not give a frick. A Retrotink 5x would be nice but I’d rather buy games.
>tradeback moves
reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Lol you should see my alakzam Thunderpunch, ice punch, psychic and recover. If it wasn’t for trade backs it would have psychic, recover, seismic toss and psybeam. Is tradebacks frowned upon in gen 1 or something? Lol
>chingdogger
which upscaler exactly?
I'm currently in a weird spot where I want to get an upscaler but don't know if it's worth it to go all out on a 5x and keep it simple or get a 2x pro and a scanline generator
This bad boy. Been using it for well over 7 years now
does it really upscale? or is it just a passthrough
if it shows 240p via hdmi, it definitely upscales
uh, no? it's the opposite
240p composite input > at least 480p hdmi output
look at the picture in the post, composite is on the input side
disgusting
It doesn't look too bad. It could be worse. If you want a cheaper option I’d go with the 2X
>genwun
how can you force yourself to play this terrible shit
sounds like user error to me how do you even manage to break crts in the span of a year
I like how that setup has a giant hourglass to constantly remind him of the passage of time. It's right next to the yellowed snes, which reenforces the idea.
I don't give a shit about authenticity I just play games I've owned for years on consoles I've owned for years, frick man do you people really go around posturing this much about how much crap you have.
I'm very pragmatic. If I have it, and it doesn't take me too long to setup, then I'll use it, but I'll never stick my nose up to emulators
There's no replacing the CRT.
But other than that, emulating the few nintendo games I like on my Wii is good enough for me, got an everdrive for Genesis games, and my PS2 has a modchip and HDD, so in my opinion, everything feels authentic while playing.
The room itself still needs a lot more work though
does the Wii still explode when you try to play SuperFX games?
star fox and doom seem work but i havent played either of them on it for very long
last time I had a Wii I could only "play" them with frameskip and it was kinda choppy and without frameskip it lagged too much
But that was like 3 years ago, wondering if anything changed
I don't give a frick about authenticity, whatever I feel is best I just do. In practice that means emulators for 3rd and 4th gen consoles and real hardware for handhelds and 5th gen/6th gen consoles.
Honestly don't give a shit, use emulators with shaders or graphical enhancements (anti-aliasing/upscaling) and use the play ahead feature to deal with any input lag. Don't really care for accuracy if it doesn't effect gameplay and the convenience far outweighs authenticity. The only time it's a deal breaker is if I can notice slowdown. I've also got some of those handheld emulation devices from China but they are more of gimmick, really I only use it to play pinball and puzzle games on the toilet.
Authenticity matters to me a lot because I'm desperate to live in a time before the world Got so bad and my favorite and only media became terrible. I looked at the modern stuff coming out. It's just so unappealing. And I'm not even old.
I don't feel strongly about authenticity.
Having an experience close to the developer's intentions is ideal of course but you don't want to spend more time setting up your games then playing them.
>you need incandescent lightbulbs to play these older games
they're being sarcastic, making fun of people saying that you should play games a certain way
that being said I pretty much just play on original hardware with a big CRT
I do use flashcarts and ODE's for everything though
>he doesn't use incident bulbs when playing retro game
>he doesn't have separate E26 and B22 bulbs for NTSC and PAL respectively
Might as well just emulate
>I do use flashcarts and ODE's for everything though
And he does
thanks for the confirmation, always great when shitposters confirm my posts
WATCH OUT
I just use PC emulation as a last resort. Nothing wrong with it, but I've always preferred playing on original hardware (or the Wii) with a CRT even if the console is modded. Of course it gets harder and harder to do this overtime (not everyone wants to search pawn shops and garage sales for old tube TVs or get the cables, do the maintenance, etc), which is why I don't fault anyone for just skipping it and going for PC emulators.
>playing on original hardware (or the Wii)
Playing your NES or SNES on Wii is no different than PC emulation, except just a worse overall experience when it comes to accuracy
For some reason people think that playing Nintendo consoles on Wii isn't emulation
Didn't say it wasn't, which is partly why I put that in parentheses. VC is all emulation so I'm not sure why people don't think it is, but I still like it for some games though. Also I wanted to emphasize PC emulation and emulators as being the one I go for but prefer the least. Just never cared for it even when I first discovered it with ZNES.
I have a few US TVs that have trinitron technology through licensing agreements. No pvms because frick that stupid shit, what am I miyamoto in 1988? Go frick yourself. I still emulate at times because it's easy as shit. I didn't have to pick up or do anything, and it's just there.
I don't get people who care. I suspect they are playing no fricking games.
Original hardware, original carts, and if you don't have a wife or extra space in your house, a CRT. I want a CRT so bad bros but I'm forever going to be a panel and upscaler pleb.
You literally may as well just emulate til then.
I don't care at all. I have an N64, Genesis, Snes, Dreamcast, whatever that have been collecting dust for years, so to speak. I emulate all of it.
I don't give a shit. It makes no difference to me, personally. I am playing it.
All I know is that it bothers me when people hardwaregay on a flat panel. Why half-ass it?
>muh wife won't let me have a CRT
What stupid garbage do you let her clutter your home with uncontested? Unless she's the breadwinner, you're a serious cuckjob.
>they break abloo abloo
So do consoles and carts.
Panel hardwaregays are weird and stupid. There is no reason you shouldn't just emulate if you are panel limited.
For me, it's real hardware on a CRT with pirated software.
I collect retro vidya because I want to play it, not for it to sit on a shelf. A lot of heralded classic software is hard to get or just not worth the price; especially these days.
I'll collect a few games here or there if it has extra significance to me, but as long as I got the console with an everdrive or a burnt disk mod, I'm good.
People always say this but go forward and buy physical it feels really different when you actually own it and you can always sell it back for what you paid.
I picked one of those carts from aliexpress recently
does that thing run sega cd games?
I like to play on real hardware, primarily because I still have all of my childhood (or otherwise sentimentally acquired) consoles. I never felt the need to buy a new system to play 1 particular game, and I rarely if ever actually explore games outside of the systems I own. I love emulation but I still prefer playing on consoles because it feels like a waste to have this stuff and not use it, not that I'm complaining. Also having flashcarts makes it easier overall to just pickup and play any game I want.
I rediscovered using CRTs probably like 5 or 6 years ago. I really like them and I completely see the benefits of using one over a scaler and a U/HD display. That said, I have an OSSC and a retrotink 2x and really like using them. My dream setup is to have my consoles split between those scalers with a one of those kick ass LG C displays, and this big panasonic standard def CRT I got for free. Maybe someday I'll have the space to set it all up.
I will say I see no point in modding in higher def video output for consoles. Just seems excessive and it does always mess with the image too much for my taste. I'm used to seeing NES and N64 games with composite video so that's what I'll use, even if I'm upscaling.
Going so far as to setup a retro themed room is frankly silly to me. Makes it seem less accessible overall. I do get the appeal somewhat, it's just not worth it to me.
For any retro PC stuff, like IBM compatible computers, I just use DOSBOX or PCEM. I sincerely don't see any reason to use an old PC for old PC games. It costs way too much these days to have a decent setup and there will always be a couple of games that simply don't work with your config. Modern PCs with wrappers and ports and whatnot are the way to go full stop.
I done care about anything outside of IBM compatible general use computers so I haven't really delved into it too much. Won't say no to a free C64 though.
In the end, it's just about the games.
I only really care about Sega in terms of pure authenticity, other than that I’m fine with having something resembling the original controller to an emulator. Nintendo stuff I just use my Wii to emulate and use the NES and SNES classic controllers.
>I've seen people her saying that you need incandescent lightbulbs to play these older games
tl: saw someone make a joke in a thread once but I'm too autistic to understand when people make fun of me
>not playing with all the lights off in nothing but the glow of your crt tv

>the night sky would look anywhere near that starry in what clearly is a densely populated area
>being able to discern that many stars regardless with the glow of the TV screen beaming at you

fire hazard
literally less heat than any modern console so, no
You should use incandescent regardless
Unless you have enough money for those expensive 100 CRI leds
For me I'm not so bothered about the color of cheap LEDs as I am the flicker. With cheap LED bulbs it's incredibly annoying.
I know what you mean. I just can't play early 80's home computer games without hearing the Stasi agent taking notes next door.
authentic software and hardware, on a flatscreen with an upscaler.
i used to only use CRTs but ive gotten over it and a minor difference in how they look doesnt bother me anymore.
also i mod my handhelds with a backlit screen
If I stepped in someone's else house today and saw this setup in his living room I would feel bad for him.
99.9% of roms the roms have been dumped, emulators ranging from 10 to 20 years of development time, shaders to replicate the crt effects to display a retro game properly, PCs capable of storage and play every retro game imaginable at a reasonable price, plus time, money and space not wasted.
If you still need authenticity, then clearly you also need a psychiatrist. The diagnosis is likely to be some variant of hoarding disorder
>How much do you care about authenticity?
Not much.
>Do you use original hardware with a CRT or just emulators?
Emulation only, LCD monitor. I'll apply a shader or something to make it look a bit better but beyond that I'm not interested.
Not at all. I've got games for 22 consoles running on my pc, which is hooked up to a qled and I upscale the bejesus out of everything I can and I use a dualsense for everything. I don't have a problem with people who will only use original hardware on a crt and buy physical copies of games, each to their own but it's just not for me
>I've got games for 22 consoles running on my pc
Not anon but unironically I do have like 8TB of ROMsets.
Only 8TB? What a casual. But since you don't know the difference between a ROMset and a console I'm guessing you mean you have an 8GB iphone.
>i've got one emulator running on my pc
Glad we cleared that up
>But since you don't know the difference between a ROMset and a console I'm guessing you mean you have an 8GB iphone.
I said ROMsets, several. One ROMset per console/platform.
>still doesn't understand the difference between a romset and a console
There's no cure for stupid
>The first post already said:
>I've got games for 22 consoles running on my pc
No you don't
You have one emulator running on your pc
Everything comprehension problems?
>There's no cure for stupid
Why don't you explain it instead of low quality shitposting?
No cure for dumb Black person stupid
>why don't you explain to something with the IQ of a dead goldfish how a romset and console are different
Because explaining is only a cure for ignorance. There's no cure for stupid.
Ignore the tard, probably doesn't even know what the term actually means
>Glad we cleared that up
The first post already said:
>I've got games for 22 consoles running on my pc
Reading comprehension problems?
I named the one's that I use retroarch for and then I listed the standalone one's that I use, I don't get why that's hard for you to understand?
>it's still coping
OK, so you're just trolling. I was beginning to think you were legit moronic
>cant. stop. coping.
Poorhomosexualry. Not even once.
Retroarch for atari lynx, gameboy, game gear, nes, master system, megadrive, 32x, megacd, snes, saturn, dreamcast, ds and n64.
Ppsspp for psp, duckstation for ps1, pcsx2 for ps2, rpcs3 for ps3
Dolphin for gamecube and wii, citra for 3ds, yuzu and ryujinx for switch
Cxbx reloaded for og xbox although not many compatible games for that one.
retroarch's swanstation was great for PS1 last I checked
I'll have to give it a go, I use duckstation but I've not even tried that in retroarch. I was planning on only doing standalone emulators but I ran out of patience setting them all up. People look down on retroarch but it's pretty convenient for running a lot of systems. I did try the pcsx2 alpha build on there but it's not great, something like burnout 3 works fine but for something like gta san andreas it's just not up to it
>People look down on retroarch
A lot of that has to do with the retroarch people being dickheads honestly
I don't know much about that, have you got an example please?
check out the recent stenzek drama, guy was actually getting blackmailed over some dumb shit
No way! That's the ppsspp guy right? I'll have a Google now
Shit, that's pretty messed up. I get the hate now. I knew duckstation wasn't going to be worked on anymore but I didn't realise that was why
But it's a open source project, everyone can contribute to it or fork it, there's really no "those people", no matter how hard they want to attention prostitute, so why does it matter?
That's true but if a big time contributor makes an ass of themselves then most people are going to be turned off even if it is open source. That's just how psychology works. And this is coming from a guy who uses Retroarch and has so for years.
It is messed up but it won't stop me from using it. It's just so easy and convenient to use, especially since I've already taken the time to get it how I want it
Yeah I don't get the point in people judging software by the personal life of the people who made it, specially when it's free
Like it? It works? Use it
For some reason everything these days has to be judged by who made it or be super personal
I completely agree
>People look down on retroarch
morons* look down on RetroArch
Mostly the argument I hear is that it's too difficult to use with thousands of menus or takes ages to configure
Not at all. It's actually a simpler version of all emulators it 'hosts'. The menu is just fricking trash to navigate. For some reason the A and B buttons are switched, you can't use a mouse and the UI is just unintuitive and feels off. If you look past that it's great software.
The only time I use emulators is if a game is so hard I need save states.
Not at all. I use a CRT filter on Retroarch for 8 and 16 bit games because it makes the pixels blend in better. 64 bit and beyond I like upscaled HD graphics. To be honest I don't have the eye for detail to truly care about the slight differences a CRT makes to be closer to the always elusive 'intention' of the original creator. It reminds me of audiophiles who insist on listening to lossless FLACs with their 1000 dollar headphones. The difference is so miniscule for me that I don't want to bother with all the hassle and money for barely any difference. Some people have an eye or ear for that kind of stuff and for them it makes a big difference. But not for me, so I don't really care.
The only real "intention" is crt blending the pixels, the most famous example being the striped waterfalls of sonic actually being a low cost translucency effect with a normal waterfall on crt, some crt'd pixel art looks incredibly good because japs are savants and did stuff with it in mind
Beyond that it's mostly whatever, I doubt most devs cared about what lightbulbs you used or what astrological sign was most apparent the night you played as long as you don't go full moron and stretch 4:3 games into widescreen or use vaseline filters
Even that wasn't strictly a CRT thing, but rather the result of a composite video signal. You would get the blending on a LCD too if you do that. Really just goes to show how there's so many moving parts to retro vidya.
Not autistic enough to get a CRT. I'll use original hardware up to a point but the heavy tubes can leave. OLED with a scaler with scanline options looks damn close to CRTs.
What game is this?
I play everything on a Raspberry Pi 4 with no filters on a LCD monitor. So clearly I don't care about authenticity and I find the pursuit of such incredibly gay, but to each his own.
I don't even call it "authenticity" but just "not looking like ass" or feeling like the latency goes to the moon and back
CRT filter + reduce latency through settings
EZ
You said no filters
PVM users are missing the most iconic audio and video of 80s TV games
I just like owning retro hardware for the nostalgia, and the games just happen to look better with scanlines. I'm not picky about the boobtube, so long as it's in good shape, so cost isn't really an issue. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hacked wii on a cheap flat-screen, but looking at getting a shitty android box or something to play PS2/Gamecube/Dreamcast/etc. So yeah, I don't care about authenticity.
Sony is good but I wouldn't get that one
Magnavox is good too
This seems like the relevant thread for this question. I'm someone who uses a PC with emulators over real hardware just out of convenience, but I strive for authenticity above all else where possible. I enjoy messing around with CRT shaders and hooking my PC up to either my VGA CRT monitor or my Toshiba Slot mask CRT TV. The problem is, I realize that buy sending the signal from my PC, I'm losing a critically important aspect to the final picture. Not only will the refresh rates not match, but more importantly the resolution doesn't either. You can't do interlacing it seems with a 10 series Nvidia card.
This is where I'm confused. Interlacing makes no fricking sense to me. Let's say I'm playing an emulator for GameCube. Based on everything I've read, GC outputs at 480i for NTSC at all times. Okay, so in the real hardware when playing a 60 fps game, how the frick does the work? Is it 60 frames of half vertical resolution? Or is my TV scanning out 480 vertical lines at 60hz? Shit makes no fricking sense to me. And it gets even weirder with the emulator which Dolphin seems to ALWAYS output progressive scanned 480p even if I disable the option to do so. Shit really pisses me the frick off.
>GC outputs at 480i for NTSC at all times
A real Gamecube can output 480p if the game has a progressive scan option — Most first-party titles have it.
Also, it's 60 refreshes at half horizontal definition on a CRT.
wait, what? I thought interlacing only deals with vertical resolution? this shit is so confusing
On a CRT you can literally see the horizontal lines alternating back and forth. The vertical lines stay firmly in place.
Ah wait I'm getting confused here too, the vertical resolution is dictated by the horizontal lines of the CRT(Which is always 480 in NTSC), and the horizontal sample-rate of the image. So yes, interlacing would affect the vertical resolution.
So then a GameCube outputting 480i at 60 frames per second should be 60 unique half frames correct? Well then I guess there's just no way to get that out of Dolphin because even disabling progressive scan both in games and in the emulator settings doesn't yield any interlacing artifacts. This is the kind of shit that makes me think nothing but original hardware can truly achieve an authentic look and feel of retro game consoles on classic television sets. Really frustrating as a preservationist.
>Based on everything I've read, GC outputs at 480i for NTSC at all times.
Yes, unless you have the component cables for it, then it can output at 480p if the game supports it, which most do. The ones that don't can be forced to via simple gameshark codes. Only a scant few multiplat games will have problems with it. I personally know a guy who bought those cables for his GC, so it's funny seeing someone angry over not being able to degrade their image in the name of "authenticity".
Pic related. The grass is greener on the other side, eh?
480i is 29.976 frames per second with each frame having two fields.
Each field is a 480p image with every other line missing.
Its your scaler's job to convert your PC's progressive video output to 480i. If your PC is outputting 480p60fps then a decent scaler should interlace it similarly to what a game console would.
The thing is some games and broadcasts would take 60 unique frames and do alternating fields for true 60 fps at half vertical resolution. Any 60 fps game on GameCube is doing exactly that. But Dolphin doesn't have any method of outputting this. I guess the closest you could get is a shader to skip every other line, alternating fields every frame. But that would look horrible on LCD and probably desync with a CRT leading to undesirable flickers. There really is no way to win with emulators.
>Each field is a 480p image
240p
GameCube outputs real 480p, it's only composite that's limited to 240p/480i.
It's two 240p images.
>Its your scaler's job to convert your PC's progressive video output to 480i.
You can output 480i straight from your PC.
It does, you can output 480i with Dolphin on a CRT running at 480i and perfectly sync it.
Does dolphin have flicker on interlace?
That depends on the CRT you use.
Anything but playing original hardware on the same TV you played these games on during the 90s is cope
I recently tried playing Metroid Prime on my old TV I used to play all the games on.
I JUST COULDN'T SEE SHIT!
I have bad eyes and I just can't see anything anymore on these tiny-ass screens.
Then don’t use a small screen?
Also don’t use composite on anything 480i
The drivers get old, the tubes get old. If you know anything or are willing to pay some one to fix the former then your problem might be solved. If it is the latter the TV is a parts machine now.
Now that I have a crt and consoles for the “true” experience, I kind of want to get back into emulation for the opposite experience. 4K resolution, 60 fps, etc. Has anyone done both side by side?
nope, I'm happy to play games on my original hardware and CRT's
Modern games on my PC
I have original hardware with flash carts and ODE's hooked up to a scart TV.
...But honestly? I've reached the point where the original consoles are only there for lightgun games, or for the few games with emulation issues. I now play more games through emulation than I do on original hardware, even though I have the original hardware sitting right next to me, ready to go, because even though they ready to go, the emulator is still ultimately more convenient. I don't have to switch the TV input - even though that's literally just pushing a button on a switch box. I don't have to power on the specific console I want to play. Retroarch is just there, ready to emulate almost everything, and in most games, I can't tell the difference between hardware and emulation. In games where there IS a difference, the difference is sometimes that that emulation is objectively superior because I know the real hardware would be choking down to 14FPS instead of the 60 I'm getting.
i play on original hardware on a crt and only use incandescent bulbs not because i care about authenticity but because i like these things better than the alternatives. if a cared about authenticity i wouldn't be playing on a pvm.
I'm not a retro purist but I still have a working 27" Wega Trinitron from 2003. I use it so I can play light gun games and N64.
What kind of furniture do you guys use?
I have something like pic related but somehow it doesn't really look good for me, how do you make your setup look aesthetic?
I want mine to look good but also be functional, that meaning I can easily switch from one console to the next.
I'm moving soon into my own place so I'll be able decorate and furnish it how I please. Doing research and I've found that TV height and distance from seat matters the most. Get something that puts your displays so the center of the screen is near or slightly above eye level when seated. Obviously something sturdy so it can hold the weight of the screen. Best option overall is to have something like your pic related, drill some cable access holes in the back, get some like 3inch extension cables to compensate for a wall wart power adapters, and then get a video output switch so you can just keep everything plugged in.
I mostly play on CRT with originally hardware but if i don’t already have the console and i can’t find it for 30 dollars or less i emulate.
I thought CRT was a meme til I found a nearly new TV in my grandma's basement and took it home. Blew my mind the first time I turned it on.
Original hardware as long as it isn't a huge pain in the ass to get it, but I always soft/hardmod my old consoles , so I can use chips and flashcarts. If I can't mod it I just emulate. Most I'll do as far as changing the experience is possibly screen upgrades, like with the GBA I installed a DSi screen for backlight.
Just feels better to play as intended
>How much do you care about authenticity?
I literally only care that the emulation is somewhat accurate.
Increasingly not at all. I find it doesn't change my experience meaningfully and eats into the time I could otherwise spend playing the games.
>incandescent lightbulbs
holy based, this is an angle of autism i hadnt even considered yet. Definitely need to upgrade my setup.
I only use a CRT with my old consoles because I already had one in the attic. I'd never go hunting for one as it just isn't worth the trouble. Picture is nice and authentic on a CRT but they're so fricking cumbersome at everything else. Emulation + shaders won't be as accurate on a flat panel but the convenience and customization far outweigh the negatives so go with that if you don't have a CRT.
If I have the console I play it on my 14" Philips.
The rest I emulate
I play on a shitty CRT I found outside someones house for free that I left in a trash bag in my parents unheated garage in dead of winter for a month in case it had roaches
Im sure it needs repairs/service menu shit done but I dont care. Once it gets bad I will just plug it into my 72 inch 4k Visio and keep gaming
I simply emulate
If you're an historical enthusiast, then you should spend the time and money getting all the original hardware for the complete "experience" of playing the game in its historical context.
But that's a ton of work just to play a videogame, and for the vast majority of people, a proper emulator is all they need to be able to appreciate and enjoy older games. A well-made CRT filter enhances the aesthetic experience, but is not necessary to fully enjoy the game. l think being easily able to access and appreciate older games is way more important than anything else. The more kids who know about and appreciate old games, the better.
Stay away from modern remakes and remasters generally, as they usually alter the games in such a way that is inferior to the original despite the progammer's quality-of-life intentions.
>op:how do you play?
>i don't i just post my hot takes about it
Original hardware on a crt. I will do backlight mods for shitty non-backlit handheld displays, however.
>everyone here claiming old films were mostly made with CRT/VHS in mind
At least start with the basics
I emulate everything in native resolution with pixel-perfect scaling where possible, because playing in HD or with upscaling filters just looks like pic related to my eyes, but that's as far as I care.
I wouldn't be able to stand it even if I wanted to get into authenticity. I always hated CRTs, they hurt my eyes and ears.
>I always hated CRTs, they hurt my eyes and ears.
Wow an actual female on /vr/. Post feet.
What's the correlation between females and CRTs? My girlfriend (female) likes to play everything /vr/ on CRT instead of panels.
Your gf is a dude. Women can't stand CRT noise.
31 here and I don't hear it at all. Lifetime of abusing my ears with high volume, concerts, etc though.
>Women can't stand CRT noise.
My girlfriend is deaf to pretty much anything 12kHz or higher. Can't even hear crickets.
Though now that I think about it, it's been a long time since I was subjected to a CRT. Since your hearing tends to get worse with age, I wonder if that might no longer be an issue. When I was young was always extremely sensitive to all manner of high-pitched electrical noises.
Are people really annoyed by it? I thought if you grew up with it, you're pretty much transparent to it and only notice it whens someone points it out, like breathing or swallowing.
I'm 29 and I can still hear when a CRT TV is turned on in a house, even if I'm several rooms away.
For me it's more of an unconscious exhaustion, like wearing uncomfortable headphones. You can grin and bear it and it kind of fades away a bit after a while, but it's still a huge relief when you finally get to take them off.
I was really happy when I got a TFT monitor for my PC, even if the black levels and viewing angles were kinda shit.
>I was really happy when I got a TFT monitor for my PC
Uh, PC monitors were all 31kHz+ there's no way you ever heard any of that.
You're probably right, it's been a long time. But I had the same exhaustion problem with my eyes, especially at 60hz. I think the monitor I had was capable of 85Hz, which helped a lot, but only at some ridiculously low resolution.
There was a game in my childhood that I played through this DVD player that was at the same time a video game, it had several games, literally an emulator, however, one of these games was very bizarre and I don't know what console it is from. You could choose four characters, one of them was a ninja who walked extremely leaning forward, almost falling, it was very bizarre. During the game everything went well, it was a beat n up, you defeated the enemies that were on the screen and you could continue in the sentence, however, one of the phases was very strange, because the enemies were pink creatures similar to pigs, and they constantly jumped very high across the screen, were difficult to defeat, and even worse, if you were hit by them, you became one, which made it very difficult to fight and even get back to normal. I NEED TO KNOW THE NAME OF THIS GAME!
I used to do both but now mister fpga is the best of both worlds.
>mister
>better than software emulation
For console games I use original hardware and a crt, for PC games I play on my modern computer with enhacements such as 16:9 or better controls in games like system shock. I have a gba sp to play gameboy and gbc games
I'm not stuck up about it really. I majority of the time use emulators but using the actual consoles is also a nice experience. Kinda warmer in a way.
As someone who grew up during a time when you plugged a console into your tv through the antenna jack, I really don't care and emulate everything.
I want to play the games and not jack off to "authenticity".
Authenticity is using RF or composite on a regular TV, tilting a Game Boy towards the Sun or a lightbulb, or if you're in Europe maybe using SCART and playing PAL games.
Purists get caught up in endless back-and-forths where they split hairs about the context of authenticity and end up with some heavily-modified system that outputs to a broadcasting monitor. Not to say that can't be a fun hobby, but all that's involved can be very demanding and costly and take away from the novelty of actually sitting down and playing games instead of perpetually adjusting and tweaking things that are barely used.
Whatever balance ensures you will sit down and actually play games is the best one. Maybe it's collecting loose carts for a system you already have or buying a flashcart. Maybe it's RGB modding a dead system you picked up for cheap. Maybe it's playing on emulators with an Xbox controller and a modern display.
For me, authenticity is quickly disc-swapping pirated PS1 games and using a PS1 RGB SCART cable I made myself from other cables with a oversized soldering iron with my brother in 1996.
There are barely any systems that don’t natively output RGB
List top 3 of each generation that counts and /vr/ and put if they support RGB or not in the end, natively.
The only min ones I can think of that don’t are the NES and the N64
>min
Main*
Even the NES had some official models that supported RGB. Funky-ass colors, though. It's pretty much just the N64 and late 70s stuff like the Atari or Intellivision that's RGB-cucked
What?
No they didn’t, all NES models were composite maximum, the PPU only produced a composite signal, the only way it wouldn’t is with a different PPU
There were some NES/Famicom variants that had a different PPU that could do RGB. Famicom Titler and the Famicom TVs. They were basically marketed towards high-end consumers and Japanese reviewers used them because it was easier to take clean screenshots with.
>They were basically marketed towards high-end consumers
sauce?
For me personally, I need some sort of limitation or I fall down a rabbit hole tweaking things infinitely and never enjoying the game. That’s why I avoid emulators. With original hardware what you have is what you get for the most part. It’s the same reason why I only put one game at a time on my flash carts.
I use the original hardware because buying a console and the game is less frustrating then dealing with emulators most of the time.
>what you think you look like saying that
>what you actually look like
This guy has guides to setup emulators: https://www.youtube.com/c/UrCasualGamer/search?query=emulator
This is where you can get emulators: https://www.emulator-zone.com/
This is where you can get games: https://vimm.net/
The whole process is idiot-proof, so don't say stupid things like this again.
RetroArch is kind of pretentious
it's a tool, what the frick?
>I use the original hardware because buying a console and the game is less frustrating then dealing with emulators most of the time.
I happened to stumble upon a pvm for a decent price a few years ago so since then I've tried to use authentic hardware. But if its games for ridiculous prices like some ps1 games then I burn them to a disk or use an everdrive equivalent for other consoles. Can't be fricked to pay nearly $200 for shmups no matter now fun they are
My first experience with retro was a snes and a wii so I don't really care. As long as the games are fun and work decently with no graphic bugs and slow down
