the way most people play is they save gems for the characters they want and will usually get them but you have to grind a lot. paypigs pay the $5 a month or whatever it is for boosted gems and degenerate whale gamblers will spend hundreds rolling for shit.
you don't *have* to spend anything, the game just incentivizes it.

thats just over 300 gems a day, you get 60 from dailies and can easily get a couple hundred by doing a few quests, clearing domains, opening chests, and finding fast travel locations.
you can also get free fates for doing various things so you also save the event ones up and use the regular ones right away, using the starglitter to get more event fates.
just gotta learn how to extract everything you can from the game.
If you are just starting Genshin and you really want Mona or Jean or something, your live must be hell. They really need a standard banner selector

I think dailies are a pretty small part of it, you only lose like 15 pulls across a six week patch if you don't do them, but you still get like 70 if you play the other stuff. I don't really bother with them anymore, if it's a period where I'm playing it more in general then I might do them along the way, or well you get the commissions done just by opening chests and stuff now as well. But I'm not going to start up the game just to do dailies. This has been a pretty dead patch as far as new stuff goes, so I've just been playing it like once a week or two

These are the case openings for Counter-Strike 2. 23 million cases opened just this month. Each case opening is at the very least 2-3$ for Valve. In just three months Valve makes as much money as Elden Ring made ever since it was released.
Mind you, this is the worst-case scenario in which every single case opened is a drop, which in itself is not a realistic scenario because people constantly buy cases from the Steam market. That means there's a lot of cases that make Valve far more than just 2-3$ per opening.
Genshin is no doubt at least as half as popular as CS2 and has the israelitery upped to eleven so setting the price to 20$ would be a huge loss to them.

I do not play Genshim. In cs2 you can sell the skins, thats why a lot people gamble on the boxes. I assume you can not do the same in Genshim
there's no trading in genshin, but there's a guaranteed win on a set number of tries
and instead of skins you get characters each with a different set of skills that make gameplay more interesting

Any game with this would be dead in the water. Part of what makes gigawhales pay up is that they get to dab on the poors. If they can't demonstrate their superiority, they won't bother with the game. A lot more people can pay $100 to max out a character rather than $1000+.
Also, part of the appeal of gacha characters is that they are somewhat hard to get. If you make it easy, far fewer will care. This kind of stuff catches the smaller minnows and dolphins - they'll pay $50-150 to try for something special just out of easy reach, but won't go harder. Just finish out that spark, throw a bit of money to hit pity. But some small amount, that anyone can do without effort? Not worth it.
And just a bit of nitpicking: $20 is way too much. It's approaching "entire new game" money to most people. $5, maybe $10, and you can catch a lot more people. But in any case, not nearly enough to make up for the small percentage of whales that will pay for gacha.

Thing is, f2p gays most likely wouldn't spend money anyway even if it was less. I certainly wouldn't buy a single solitary character for 20 bucks, that's still a ridiculous price when you can get an entire game or a proper DLC for that. So the model where they bleed out whales probably works the best for them, freegays will keep being freegays either way
