Would it have killed them to just make a villain who wants to conquer the universe without it being some kind of dumb subversive twist?

I think it was pretty clearly done as sequel bait. Emperor Zurg isn't even in the movie technically, and the Zurg we DO have just "borrowed" the tech from the real Zurg Empire.

As far as directions they can take the franchise with that setup, things could be a lot worse.

Lasseter would never approve of this.

No. Zurgs whole thing was that he was supposed to be a shallow antagonist made to sell toys alongside Buzz. Making him something more than a star wars reference was smart

                Anonymous

why does it have to be a star wars reference. what was the whole point of that then? you cant just pull back and say

The joke was it was a star wars reference except the second buzz developed a good relationship with his father.

I can get if they didn't want to make him a walking Darth Vader parody. But making him Buzz from the future just seems like an awkward concept imo. If they wanted to give him some depth, I'm sure there's some other way they could've gone about it.

                Anonymous

It works in the context of the movie and buzz's arc. As for an ongoing antagonist goes, that remains to be seen as the movie implies the REAL Zurg will get involved in one way or another going forward

          Anonymous

There's this whole time dilation thing where a few hours for Buzz on a mission can be years and years for home base. Buzz accidentally got everyone stranded on an alien planet, and part of his motiviation is trying to fix it. Zurg it turns out is Buzz from a future where he kept trying to fix things and got evil.

Which makes the line from Toy Story 2 where Zurg tells Buzz he's his father not make any sense. The writers tried to cop out and say that Andy's toys were based on the old (non-canon) cartoon. They really wanted to swear by the plot point of this movie being the movie Andy saw in 1995 that made him want to buy a Buzz Lightyear toy.

I know it's a meme to suggest every movie sequel released years and years after the original should be a time skip, but I2 was one of the few examples of something where they really should've just done that. It kind of helps that was actually in the cards once during development. The final movie was just so damn forgettable compared to the first one.

I feel like they wanted I2 to take place immediately after the first movie because they wanted to show how the family reacts to learning about Jack Jack's powers.
I'll admit that seeing their reactions (and Edna's) was fun, but the whole rest of the movie would have benefited from a time skip.

The major problem with I2 is how it repeats story beats top to bottom from the first movie. It feels more like a remake than a sequel.

Probably $40 on average. I usually buy a new console game every couple of months, and on occasions a cheaper game on Steam.

Just a reminder that you can find movies like TS3, Inside Out, and Coco to be alright but it's still a complete and total decline from The Golden Age in general where every single movie is rewatchable about 100 times over and has an understated maturity while the others just simply do not and feel produced in a lab.
A lot of rewatchability is based off your nostalgia, but I just can not see the kids growing up with Turning Red and Onward and being able to objectively say that those two have better writing than the likes of The Incredibles, Wall-E, or Monsters, INC.

I think you're all misunderstanding that in-universe Lightyear is a livr action reboot of the Buzz Lightyear franchise. Andy, being done with College probably goes to see it and thinks it's meh. For the longest time I actually thought the movie would end with Buzz and the toys sitting around the TV watching the movie, and Buzz making a sly remark.

But the actual truth isPixar doesn't even care and it's not canon or otherwise, just a miscalculated milking of a popular character
