I’ve been playing xiv for a couple years now, and I played wow for 5 years before that. The community is so much more social in xiv, definitely the thing I noticed most. The WoW community is kinda...antisocial even online.
Technically started WoW at the tail end of BC, but didn't get into it until well into WotLK. Went through a bad breakup during MoP where I threw myself into it more, but was never gud enough to get the Black Harvest achievement. Something that still bugs me today even though I don't play anymore.
Depressed and frustrated and still seeking escapism I decided to try XIV and made some progress, but didn't really get into it until SB some years later.
Not sure of the exact chronology, but went back to WoW at some point for WoD, but didn't stick around long. Pretty much stuck with XIV since SB though.
Plan on resubbing to XIV for 6.3. No plans on ever returning to WoW.

I played WoW with friends for like a month with the most recent expansion and it got boring so I quit. Eventually I picked up FF14 and played that for a bit, but I got so bored with the story and gameplay I dropped that too and now I don't play any MMO. Instead I took the time to go play STALKER, all the Metroid games, and I replayed Resident Evil 4. All of which were significantly more exciting and interesting video game experiences.

29. I couldn't make it through Battle for Azeroth. Played through FFXIV all the way through Stormblood the month before Shadowbringers came out.
Late 20's. Casually enjoyed from vanilla to cata. Tried legion at launch but didn't like mythic dungeons (didn't help that all my friends quit). Played LotRO, Rift, GW2 before settling on FFXIV late Heavensward. WoW had better netcode and the open world was generally more fun but I'll never go back.

first ogre raid in WoD is when I quit. between never leaving garrison and no flying until post-expac thats when i first started playing FF14 seriously. And mid-BC classic is when I opted in to having my account deleted.
Then FF14 shit the bed with post-stormblood shit by making normal/story mode raids tedious and hard at the same time. removing warning zones and adding instant death shit made leveling alt jobs a pain in the fricking ass. I asked them to close my account earlier this year.

Yes, because that boss was designed assuming you already did the Fate with AOE markers. Since that's the first time most players nowadays encounter that type of boss they put AOE markers on it.

Go the XIV Mod Archive, sesrch foe the user named Req Rider, DM him on discord asking for a link to his thicc mods discord server. His mods are the main ones everyone uses for big breasts/asses and he makes them public on the archive but most other thicc mods are only on that server.
Mods require you to use Penumbra or XIV Textools to install them. Textools injects direclty into the game's files, so if you mod an item then anyone wearing that item will have the modded appearance. Penumbra is a XIVlauncher plugin that has an ingame UI and more functionality than Textools letting you choose how the mods appear or even use multiple mods on the same item (EG you can make cats have bigger breasts than elves or make it so only your character is modded) with the downsides being a higher performance overhead and it not working after a patch until XIVlauncher is updated which usually takes longer than Textools. On the flipside, textools requires you to restart the game to change or install mods while Penumbra works entirely ingame. Textools meanwhile can let you edit racial scaling like height, or scale booba up if the largest sizes aren't big enough which is what I do.
I think I stopped playing WoW in earnest after Legion. I skipped WoD. I tried BfA and quit after the first raid.

I played WoW from 2006-2011 and haven't played another MMO since. I probably never will either. They're a waste of time and a distraction from playing better games.

I would consider FFXIV to be a good game, it has good soundtrack, good boss fights, good story, the combat is your standard tab targeting MMO that plays it safe, so I'd say gameplay is above average, and finally, you can complete the game in a couple of months, no need for grinds or waste time, just play and enjoy, then wait 2 years for the next expansion, pay for the game and have months of great content.
They will have 2 free weeks every couple of months in between so that's when I try to catch up with the patches and content I missed.

Also, I know a lot of people who like XIV, and not a single one of them finished more than 3 FF games, and in fact, most of them haven't even PLAYED one. The probability of people who made those lists being like them is high, especially if they're journalists.
I myself finished all main FFs and played XIV (ARR without expansions) up to around 30-35 level and its story and characters were better than in FFs: I, III, X-2, XIII-2, that is all. Yes, in those terms, even II and XV were better.
Well, maybe it gets better 50, 200 or 1500 hours in, when you reach Shadowbringers, but I'm not going to go through the boring part and MMO combat to reach the good part.
I think its rated so highly because there are stories you cannot tell in a short game like most FF titles. You need the character development only an MMO can give you, and XIV does it well.

I've been playing ff14 since mid ARR (tried it first on 1.0 but it was lame but hey I got a neat tattoo now) and I get this. I think ARR-HW's msq quests are basic mmorpg fetchquests disguised/trying to be something else. Afterwards it gets better sure but in the end it's a mmorpg with a good story (good meaning not bad and could've been better) for a mmorpg. I can't compare it to older games' stories because I first think of the mmo "limitation" . People say that it's an RPG first and a MMO second but still it has to cater to the masses like any mmo. I've played FF4, 7, 8 , 9, 10 and 15 and yeah these were story focused jrpgs, 14's story isn't on par (well in case of 15 it's better lmao) but at least for the mmo limitations (imo limitations again) it doesn't shame the "brand".

I quit WoW after clearing Naxx during WOTLK and went back to EVE online because I found the social aspects lacking. I picked up XIV because my girlfriend wanted to play and it was so utterly boring that it was the first game I ever played where I was literally falling asleep and dozing off mid-dungeon. The only MMOs I truly enjoyed were EVE and Archeage becuase those are actual social mmos that require interacting with people in order to advance instead of relying on PVE pinatas and involved meaningful world PVP that actually had stakes when you got into fights
Archeage during Beta and early release was some of the best shit out there.
Before any of the pay to win shit mattered and the game wasn't gutted to heck with guides for everything BDO had the same death

Any of the current extreme trials. Read up on strat a bit, join a practice party if possible, but if there isn't any than really anything else than a farm party will be fine. Dont worry it's relatively easy and none will get pissed at you for doing things wrong.
If you enjoyed that then you can move on to trying the current Savage tier.

I'm just getting to endwalker for the first time and I'm enjoying it. I don't think WoW or ff14 Is perfect, wows glamour system is better(the gallery specifically) can handle true pet classes etc. But ff14 makes my character actually feel like part of a story, trials are fun, housing is fun etc.
On the whole I think I probably enjoy ff14 a bit more. Helps that I always hated sylvannas and I was a horde player. I do have a question though I know the WoL is about to get a island to run a farm on, do we have lore on why? I can only imagine it's so they get a vacation before they have a psychotic break from years of constant tramua
we don't know the actual reason why yet. A character gives a list of what you haven't done yet on Eitherys at the end of Endwalker. its teasers for upcoming and current content. the list includes ruins under the islands of the ocean, but who knows if thats relevant to sanctuaries.
