Not really. There's nothing to do in the game outside of monster collecting. The overworld is empty. Hate what shitmon has become all you like but those games still have a story, towns and a variety of multiplayer modes to tie the experience together. All Palworld has is to keep resource gathering and fill out the tech tree.
same way valheim got so popular - it's a fun game that got tons of exposure from news outlets and streamers that launched for a cheap price

A combination of two things. Initial layer of popularity from people treating it as a crusade against gamefreak. And then streamers cashing in on that making it massively more popular among more normal people.
