I really liked it at first but at some point towards HW I realized most of my gameplay was dialogue and cutscenes. I always liked the stories in FF but in an MMO everything is just too dragged out for me to care. I like WoWs approach where it’s just a backdrop and you can tune in whenever you want and it’s not excessive.
I play FFXIV and have for many years, it's popular for an MMO but compared to big games in other genres it's a small potato. MMO is a dying genre with no innovation sadly.
I tried FFXIV and the combat animation plays out regardless of your movement making it look floaty and disconnected from the ground.

It's difficult to really express, but there's just a certain feeling of atmosphere and 'immensity' that XIV has moved away from. Coils and Alexander were awesome, Eden and Pandaemonium felt like slogs where you just teleport to a boss and smash its teeth in. And shit as WoW's story, is, I still enjoyed the concept of Vaults far more than the stories in ">Nier Crossover" and "Let's piss on the Twelve lmao".

Well, all the people that made it initially basically retired, quit, or were fired. All of em. When you replace the passionate spark of old with new hires who have reverence but not respect for the IP they're working on, you lose what made it great. Because the was catered around Endgame raiding and neglected everything else for years and years. Nothing to do if you're a casual or midcore player so they left and eventually even the raid gays got tired of the difficulty being so high because it's tuned to the RWF raiders.
M+ killed WoW. It was fine in Legion because it was easy and a competitive way to gear up next to heroic raiding but the minute they made it better than raising and encouraged the tryhard cancer it became shit
We can argue all day whether M+ is good for the game, but the game would be even more dead without it. It's a new avenue of end game content for those who do not want to commit to a few month long raiding schedule where you're expect to attend 9-12 hours worth of raid nights every week.
tbh I think it’s great, I can get top tier gear without a guild or talking to anyone or playing the same thing for 2-3 hours straight. I also love the wowtoken because I can play for free and I got d4 for free, still haven’t played it though. Antisocial and poor adhd zoomers stay winning I guess.
WoW was the classic Discord/Facebook. You logged in to partake. You had to sub and be on the game to partake. Today, everyone just idles on Discord and half-assedly gets involved in a bunch of communities they arent really in, but are technically "in".
My guild died the second we got a Discord cause then being part of it was no longer being gatekept.
the playerbase changed how it plays games while wow clung to its old design and didnt change with it. people dont play wow anymore for the gameplay but to beat it completely. you have to beat all the content and you have to do it with as little effort as possible or solo.
part of what made the wow community change was the rise of discord, easily accessible guides for everything, minmax culture and the unwillingness to wait to do content. players also dont want to group up anymore to do things.
it has to be all now now now and if there isnt a way to automatically queue up for content with others its seen as bad.

Can you do that in wow? No, not really. Because to enter dungeons you need mythic plus score, to enter raids you need curve achievements, you need high enough ilvl to outgear whatever content you queue for. Is this fun for people that take the game seriously? Sure, but they are, in any game, always the minority.
Similar thing happened in pvp. You wanna go in with your friend and play some duo thing that is utterly unviable but fun for you? like... double dk lets say. Cool! You can do that! Then every match you encounter is healer+dps, or rogue+mage. You quickly realise that the game is only played by people taking it seriously, and your fun isnt allowed.
You also need a solid suite of addons and weakauras, the game is simply designed with them in mind now, they expect you to use them for its difficulty, so if you dont use them, you are nerfing yourself.
This is simply not an engaging method of play for a majority, and the moment you turn away your casual playerbase, your game is going to suffer. Every gamemode is held together by people having fun, now that no one is having fun in anything and just running in their hamsterwheel, there is a depressive atmosphere in the entire game.
Classic ironically feels more friendly for casual playthrough than retail, despite having much older design concepts

MMOs are a dead genre for a reason. WoW is an anomaly based on it's grandfathered playerbase of 30-40 year olds and XIV is the only FF game that hasn't sucked balls for 20 years so it draws in that big base too. Not even the biggest company in the world, Amazon, could make a successful MMO.
Dragonflight isn't worse than Shadowlands, BFA, Legion, etc. Better than Warlords maybe. The problem is none of these were quite good, the modern formula sucks but they refuse to act on this because deviating from it risks alienating the last brain-damaged people playing the shit game. I get a better sense of community interaction playing Fortnite with their season events and special gamemodes.
There's no sense of community, player progress is dulled by the oversaturation of gearing activities and truncated by seasonal design scheme, the world is super shallow due to the minigame diablo adventure world quest format, the lore has long since been butchered to appeal to fragile leftists that can't stand racial division in a game about warring races, and to top it off the game is unabashedly pay to win with every chat channel being spammed with boosters. What is there to enjoy?
