Bowser's a decent guy underneath all of it and will even team up to stomp actual evil threats. Eggman actively does shit like blow up the moon and split the planet in half

Bowser tried to genocide the Yoshis and turned a whole country into blocks and bushes.

It's all presentation. Eggman is an egocentric but charismatic man baby, much like Bowser. Other media and a few missteps get people to misunderstand this.

How many companies and ventures does this man own? He's at least 80+% of the 1% in Sonic's World, and he's profitable to work with for the other 20%, so he just keeps on keeping on.
Besides, the only real problem he's ever caused with people on the planet was The ARK because he made such a fuss about it. 06 is a time loop that fixed itself. Dark Gaea did frick all, barely anybody noticed or cared that the world was in pieces. Colors, Lost World, Generations, Frontiers were all cordoned away from people. Forces only seemingly affected the furry population. He's basically a nuisance for the Government but he still pays hefty taxes for all his real businesses so he's got the green light. Follow the money.

True enough. And considering Perfect Chaos' revival, he succeeds even if it's not as explicit.
When you mention that, I am surprised he hasn't been disappeared yet. The G.U.N. faction of the Government seems intent to do so in SA2, so who knows what happened to them afterwards. I never played Shadow the Hedgehog so I'm not sure about G.U.N. afterward.
I still stand by him being too profitable. What's a destroyed city when he has and can generate the capital to build another one just as big in a couple years?

          Anonymous

G.U.N. was around during 06 since Shadow and Rouge are agents for them, and in Zero Gravity it’s mentioned that they’re investigating all the robots going haywire, though they don’t actually appear. I think that was the last time they were explicitly mentioned.

Yeah, if we're to believe that oil ocean is like a lake and not like a real oil reserve then everything on the planet would have died
Depending on how much you believe in climate change, a little over five trillion gallons have done all the CO2 damage we've done so far.
What Sonic did would be 760 times as bad as all of the oil consumption throughout human history, and he did it all at once.

According to Ian Flynn, All of the Sonic games take place over seven months.

And Sonic was locked up for six of those in Forces, meaning everything from Sonic 1 up to Forces happened in a single month.

It's possible Robotnik has spent the first fiftyish years of his life amassing resources, only to see a blue hedgehog relentlessly destroy them in a few weeks.

Pretty sure Ian was joking about that and not something serious that people will of course do in this fan baseand people with a grudge to use that out of context

        Unleashed had another one-and-done.
        Same for Gens.
        Colors was Eggman.
Lost World was the Zeti, who weren't well used but could be fun in spinoff material if used well.
Forces was Eggman again and Infinite, who was just a mook who died.
Frontiers is some big evil moon.

It's not that these are things that the writers haven't thought of, it's things they intentionally avoid because they miss the point of the stories the Sonic games try to tell.
Eggman and Sonic aren't really "characters". They're metaphors; stand-ins for concepts larger than them.
Sonic represents nature, freedom, and the good of all, whereas Eggman represents technology, tyranny, and all that is greedy and selfish.
Asking "why doesn't Sonic/the government/whoever just kill Eggman" misses the point of the characters and the stories the Sonic games try to tell. You can't murder the concepts the characters represent, or essentially are.
This is why trying to have character development for either of them is misguided. They're intentionally static characters, inspiring change in others. The story of Sonic vs. Eggman should be treated more as parable, dealing with larger themes rather than the plights of individual characters. So many people miss the point, and that's why the Sonic series is as fractured as it is.

      Anonymous

This is why Shadow was so beloved because he wasn't static and was allowed to change

        Anonymous

I never said OTHER Sonic characters should be static like Sonic. Sonic is a vessel for change in others. There are plenty of excellent stories in Sonic that revolve around specific characters, often learning lessons from Sonic (Shadow, Blaze, Emerl, Marine, etc.) But to treat Sonic (or Eggman) as a dynamic character is missing the point, and a ton of Sonic media misses that essential aspect of those characters.

That is a major plot point of SA2 and the government couldn't do shit to him. The US isn't going to try and oppose a man who can just shit out space armadas and casually crack the planet into pieces, especially since Sonic always stops him anyways.

For money, I'm sure Eggman either hacks cash into offshore bank accounts or sells his own tech to other companies. I bet he used roboticization to make a killing in the medical field. Imagine being able to completely replace a failing organ or detached limb. And being able to switch it off or otherwise control it whenever he wants doesn't hurt either.
