How To Begin The Metal Gear Series

Not a big fan of modern games. I grew up playing Splinter Cell on the original XBOX but never happened to play metal gear. Bought my mom MGSV for Christmas, it looked pretty fun, but I like my lore consistent, so: if I want to play the entire series, what's the best way to do that? I'm willing to play originals or remakes, but I'd prefer to only play one version of each story unless both versions are fun to beat in different ways.

Where do I start? Where do I end? Is there any game I can disregard? Thanks boys.

OP’s got a cool mom if that wasn’t a typo.

She 100%ed it and loved it. I've got her on Ghost of Tsushima now and she keeps pulling me aside to show me how pretty the game is, kek. She loves stealth-action games where she can conquer territory. She actually played Splinter Cell before I was old enough to hold a controller, I got it as a hand me down.

Are MG and MG2 genuinely good?

My mom's great, at the cost of my dad being a spineless egotistical sack of shit, but hey, you can't win them all.

yes, mg2 is definitely worth at least trying, I just wouldn't play it before mgs1.

          >Are MG and MG2 genuinely good?
They're not as refined as MGS1 or 2, but they're worth a playthrough if you played a couple of the games and liked them, especially MG2. MGS1 is the better starting point than MG1 though.

So classic MG is victory lap material. 10-4.

As a game 4 is fine if a little short if you skip every cutscene.
It's definitely one of the tougher stealth levels in the series, chapter 4 especially but it's a very fun experience overall. Most of the complains come from the story which is just bloated with exposition, long cutscenes, useless information and nonsensical character motivations.

I might give it a try anyway. The batshit plotline is enjoyable in a campy way to me, but maybe that's a zoomer perspective. If the first two games were unironically badass, I can imagine it being frustrating watching the series flanderize itself.

MG2 is a lot like MGS1 with more of an emphasis on sneaking and exploration. Same for Ghost Babel.

You won't play the MSX games to completion, so start on the PS1 with MGS. Play MGS2 on PS2 or Xbox OG, PS2 Substance is best version. MGS3 Subsistence is good on PS2. Play MGS4 on PS3 but understand that game is essentially Kojima shitposting about secondaries that can't read between the lines.

Skip Twin Snakes, MGSV and all the portable games. Not really worth your time.

MGS1 -> MGS2 and then stop because that's where Kojima intended to end the series, and it's all downhill from there. MG1, MG2, and Ghost Babel are good too if you don't mind retro stuff.

If I can accept some moronic lore and all, is MGS3/4 fun to play? MGS5 looks fun, if a bit needlessly huge.

play 1, 2, and 3. if you're curious give mg2 a try when you get to 3, bonus included. do not listen to people who tell you to play mg1 and mg2 before mgs1. if anything it will moderately detract from the experience because it's so different and relatively primitive. the only worthwhile thing about 4 is its multiplayer which isn't viable for a noobie to get into in 2024.

Does MGS4 suck as a game that hard?

not that anon but mgs4 is both not all that fun to play and has a pretty shitty story, you can tell that kojima wanted to be done with mgs by 3 and it's moronic on purpose

Understood. Looks like I'm playing the core trilogy then probably checking out MGSV just because it's a cool sandbox then. Thanks Ganker.

no, but it's just such a bloated mess that it's not really worth suffering through for the meager amount of unrestricted gameplay. if you really, really want to experience a few crumbs of polished seventh gen stealth I guess it might be worth playing.

MGS3 plays differently (way less of an "arcade stealth" vibe) but is alright for the most part. MGS4 is fine when you actually get to play the game in an open area which is basically never because the movie game meme is real.

MG1 and MG2 are fun but can be a bit cryptic, there's no shame in using a guide for those if you feel the need. my advice to you would be to start with MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, then Peace Walker, then MG1+2. after that, play MGS4 but be warned that the plot is rather all over the place, leaving MGSV for last as a fun sandbox game.

Get the master collection, play Metal Gear 1 and 2 (or at least watch a let's play on YouTube) then just go through them in order.

Compared to Splinter Cell, MGS is supposed to play a bit arcadier. Think of it like a toybox where you can do all these different sort of things to interact and frick with guards, but you can play them really fast and fluidly for better ranks if you choose to.
