So Thorfinn must learn to strike a balance WITHOUT dipping into the extremes of violence OR pacificism. THAT is the core theme of Vinland Saga.
You aren't supposed to look at Thorfinn and see some role model that you can draw morals from; you're supposed to be a damaged boy who never grew up trying to cope with a world that took everything from him.

It's not like everyone bends over backwards to get impregnated by him and his close relationships are more familial than anything and while he's revered as a god, he's not generally shown to be desired by women.
And both stories put decent effort into world building compared to other generic shit and put an emphasis on the MC bonding with other male characters unlike kiritoshit stories where every male character is viewed as a threat to the MC.

Because anime got a frickload to make. That's why. Studios have to work on shows for nearly a year and can easily cost up to a million per episode. Which means they need funding from outside. And that funding usually comes from manga and novel publishers who just want their titles to get more exposure.
This isn't like the US or Europe where big giga corporations like Warner or Disney bankroll the entire thing on their own. With each anime you have like +10 different interests groups backing it

It kinda feels like im watching a spin off of Tu Love Ru with the spineless MC and pink haired girl, with a harem of monster chicks instead of space chicks. I enjoyed that series a lot. Maybe its because of all the pushback against being beautiful and sexy nowadays, but it makes these series show more brightly than before

It had a perfect blend of dark atmospheric Seinen style and a more cute sleek modern aesthetic. Also a lot of experimental series and genres. Then in the early 2010s, the style changed to be a lot more colorful, modern, digitalized, and Moe focused with a lot more Slice Of Life Highschool series on the rise. The demands of big companies started increasing and so did the number of shows being produced on average which led to focusing on the taste of mainstream audiences with less room for experimenting. A lot of the directional decisions were made by big higher-ups rather than the creators themselves. A very similar thing happened to the video game industry over the years tbh

I used to absolutely mow down anime now I can’t get through a single series. I genuinely can’t tell if I’ve gotten too old and bitter or the industry changed. Maybe it’s because I was just going through 30+ years of classics and once those ran out I didn’t like it as much, but I was still actively seeking out mecha and “artsy” shit but I don’t even do that now. I do still play anime styled retro gamed a ton though, those are extremely kino. There’s about 200 Saturn and ps1 games that need translating.
modern anime is all quantity over quality. Animations are garbage and even the most moronic, uncreative manga, LN, RPG maker game or web comic gets an adapted. Old stories werent necessarily better but at least the animations were good. This is also why Demon Slayers receives so much praise despite the story being so garbage cause it's a battle shounen with actually good animations.

I already mentioned OPM S2 which was seasonal just zooming out and playing sounds to create "fights". Animes like the spider trash which aired two seasons also had notable bad animations with one episode having them outsourced to china. Producing a battle shounen and then going budget on the battle animations is beyond me even if it's "weekly".

Do I like old anime because I'm a contrarian and only like it because it's "old" or do I like it compared to new anime because new anime feels too "preachy"/tryhard at times and just lazy/unoriginal at other times.
But then I'll look back at old anime and they get political too. There's a lot of plot elements that they do there that would also make people shit today. But I can't help but think - well old stuff just does it better but what the frick does that mean? I guess one way is that even with politics stuff - they'll try to humanize the villain that isn't just giving a sob story while new anime they just either give the villain a sob story or he's just an evil prick just because.

Take naruto as example, the main "villains" actually wanted to make good things(by achieving peace) they just used a more radical approach to it, they all had actual plausible stories and why they are the way they are and why they do those things.
The few modern anime(correct, naruto is not modern anymore since it aired in 4:3 aspect ratio for years) have villains being evil just for the sake of being evil or shitty reasons, so now compare that to naruto and say again modern anime "just as good as 2000s anime".

I think it's a combination of aesthetics and direction. I watched Mnemosyne a while ago. The colours are more muted. It almost feels like a noir series. Lots of silence or mood pieces that don't really have a clear presence. Whenever some fight did break out, there would be barely any music. The focus was on the other sounds and the dialogue of the character(s).
In modern anime, you'd have lots of energetic and exciting music to get you pumped for action. But it tends to be more generic hype music, instead of something like Susume Hirasawa's tracks that make all action sound like these battles are hectic and tragic, a result of political tension and greed, not wow wacky cool fight beat the baddie.
'97 Berserk had lots of longer drawn-out shots with Susume Hirasawa's music making it either tranquil and fit to give the audience time to think about the events (when it might've also been intentionally dragging out moments so they'd have to animate less)
Speaking of how noir Mnemosyne felt, I did like No Guns Life a lot. Definitely felt like it could've come out of that era, even though that it too is now 5 years old.
In the end, as always, try to see each anime as it's own thing. And if you find out you don't like a lot of modern things, just don't watch them. As you say, times change. No need to feel bad about the current things not jiving with you. If anything, it'll allow you to enjoy things more when you don't keep them beholden to OLD & NEW

I've never watched an actual harem, although, I guess Harem in Labyrinth kinda works, but it's not really a harem until later on.
Most of the other "harem" stuff I've watched are "guy surrounded by girls which he never taps". Quite annoying actually, I was hoping for a fantasy relationship, so I thought, harem would definitely have a relationship, boy I was wrong.
Drama "who will win the MCbowl!?" harem is cancer imo. Battle harem is usually not like that
It can be done in a fun rival way like Tsukimichi, but usually it's done in a mean way like frick like in that greatest demon lord isekai, the girl comes in being a useless then MC and the girl that orbits him give her a confidence boost and she suddenly tries to grab MC for herself lol
