At the risk of derailing this wonderful Sopranos thread with Sopranos discussion: It's a competently written drama that has a lot of likeable characters in interesting situations. The drama is believable and layered, and deals with universal topics like mental health, financial security, family relationships, and personal ethics. It could very easily just be about who's getting whacked, but instead it takes itself seriously and the biggest emotional moments are more often than not about the consequences of dysfunction.

It's also quite funny, both with corny lines and constructed subtle jokes, can be scary, and is definitely able to be self-indulgently artistic. And on top of all of this has some amazing performances that range from good to genre-defining. Whether by the actors' own talent, or credit to the direction; almost every episode gives you multiple servings of memorable scenes. And with all that it is still able to deliver satire and societal criticism that doesn't feel like it is stepping in front of the plot.

You don't have to like it, no one has to like everything. But it's a bit like saying you don't like pizza. There's nothing wrong with being accessible and suitable for mass-consumption. Being niche isn't inherently a good thing, and being broad isn't inherently a bad thing. There's a lot of good art in that show and I find it hard to believe that someone can watch it and get nothing of substance out of it.

      >How anyone could like this show escapes me.
I have a hard time getting past season 4, everyone is a turd

There is a level of schadenfreude necessary to enjoy it at that point. I didn't watch it for years because I got burnt on it being miserable the first time around. But I suppose it depends on your tolerance for seeing these people sabotage their own lives over and over.

I think the issue is that you're comparing it against the stuff you ordinarily would find on American television, which is what the Sopranos was essentially competing against at the time. It's a very dumb series written by hacks, but when you look at the landscape of American television, it's understandable why people might imagine it wasn't garbage. But, in 2024, with all the power of hindsight, the show has aged like milk and the people still dragging around its corpse for whatever "memes" they can find in its moldy cavities leaves me wondering if there's any cure for people like you.

            >I think this post is more revealing about yourself than you'd like it to be

I'm not the guy who tried to wax poetic about a show that tries its hardest to mythologize New Jersey Italians.

Maybe it's because I'm from New Jersey. Though, that really can't be it. It's not like it takes any special skill to recognize every actor is just the kind who overacts even without any cameras, to the point where they're convinced they're not acting at all.

The "drama" of "Everything is fricked because everyone's fricked up, but it's okay because they can blame it on other fricked up people" is just tedious, nihilistic self-indulgence that can last for about a season before the cards are laid down and you can see it's just a shit hand.

It's just the same old tired crime drama cliches set in the mystical fantasy land of New Jersey, with a cast of characters that could all die and it'd probably be for the best for everyone, themselves included.

My own brother was a guido.
He's not even Italian. All it took was spiked hair, an orange tan, and that constant "Oh, you wanna go? You wanna go?" attitude. He even got pretty far in the auditions for some season of the Jersey Shore. And I love my brother, the moron that he is.

I even had a few guido friends. Well, not friends, but whatever it's called when you're friendly with someone but you don't respect them, and they sycophantically worship you because they've seen you beat up your brother for forgetting himself a little too much and he happened to be the toughest quido in the gang, probably just on account of not being some midget Italian. You couldn't throw a stone in New Jersey without hitting at least two guidos, so hating them on a personal level would just consume you with hate.

If it sounds like I hate obnoxious Italians though, you're right. I'm actually kinda surprised there's anyone who doesn't hate obnoxious Anythings. Hell, I'm half convinced that the only reason most people enjoyed the Sopranos was because they just wanted to see all the shitty people in the series die.

That is literally the point. They're all evil people that get what they deserve in the end. You may be able to excuse one of the transgressions in isolation, but they just keep making the wrong decisions every opportunity because they are selfish, greedy etc. It's death by a thousand cults, every small act of selfishness paints the picture of an absolute monster.
It's more of a deconstruction of the "glamourous" ideas of gangsters and shows how banal evil can be and lulls the viewers into rooting for the bad guy at times because you also see the things that make them sympathetic. It's very clever in that way. If you think it glamorizes the mob or is nihilistic it went entirely over your head.

          >It's a very dumb series written by hacks, but when you look at the landscape of American television, it's understandable why people might imagine it wasn't garbage.

Nah, it was Tony Blundetto that really brought it about, the fat joke was just setting the stage.

I used to live in the town they filmed the last episode in, Holstein's was crowded like a motherfricker for so long after that, which is crazy since the food there has always sucked.
