You can really just do a system like this but with a twist, I don't think you need to build on it. Future chapters of the game will probably stick with the formula and just add boss-specific twists like Spamton's BIG SHOTS or Queen's punch out minigames.
UTY really didn't change the formula in a meaningful way. It did the formula well and I like the unique boss stuff that does exist, but it's not striving to do more than Undertale from a combat perspective, mostly just adding QoL and flourishes like the different backgrounds and music depending on the area you're in or changing how encounters work in genocide.

Hmm. Tricky question. My first thought is to either expand upon Dalv's role in the story, or swap him with the more charming Decibat. Honestly though, it would need a massive rewrite to comfortably fit in a time period before Undertale proper, which means no Flowey. Gimmie a minute, OK?
Write it so Undertale only happens as a direct result of Yellow, that being more than just "Clover dies at the end because he has to".
In terms of gameplay, don't expect the player to have already played Undertale, that makes for a worse handling of difficulty, Deltarune doesn't do this and it's better off for it.

But UTY having no effect on UT is central to the problem with the pacifist ending. We get to see what Clover accomplished by making the ultimate sacrifice and it's literally nothing
Personally my problem is everyone just kinda ends up worse. I can accept if Clover's journey doesnt affect the events of UT proper if he did something of worth in his own. What did he do exactly, make Martlet quit her job? Force Ceroba to relive Kanako's death from his own sacrifice? Starlo is granted a bit better as his situation with the feisty five was fixed but that's 1/3 (Dalv who). He should've either not sacrificed himself or actually accomplished a little more like saving Kanako even if that's at the cost of his own life

Just make it harder than how Toby makes the games. You can add more soul modes and bullet colors but too much is such a thing. You could make a game where a soul mode is always on too and that could work
The combat system allows for lots of expressive moves from the enemy side, and soul modes help differentiate how bosses feel.
Orange, blue and green bullets are also good to have to keep things fresh
With these gimmicky turn based games I think that you should keep both turns as fast and snappy, so introducing too many minigames or making the attacks from the enemies take too long can ruin it
The grazing mechanic in Deltarune is great because not only its a risk reward system that gives you an useful resource, it also reduces the duration of the enemy attacks
Being able to do more than just dodge during the enemy would certainly make the fights more interesting, the yellow soul mode or the cyan soul mode (from the Spamtom the great fangame) should be the default
DRYanon here, i'll be gone for most of the day so i wont be able to do much. i hope to at the very least set up the "fade to black" transition for going between rooms before i have to leave.
my plan is that
starting out, you get the shooting soul mode for serious bosses (such as the mid bosses or chapter end bosses)
around the game's halfway point, the shooting mode becomes permanent.
for the final chapter you gain the ability to dash
shooting mode bullets only be able to affect yellow enemy bullets, so the combat wont be trivialized by the ability to delete everything
on kanako's half, [spoiler]she'll gain the ability to do the scampton the great parry.[/spoiler]

Especially once you get past the halfway point, you'll have to recognize in a split second which soul you're controlling every attack unless you sacrifice the speed of battle and scream at the player who is being attacked before each turn

This might just be me but I almost never pay attention to that, I move on after reading the text and if I dont care about the text because Im on a second attempt I just skip forward to the attack. Plus it's still changing the player's skillset (soulset?) on a random interval if you arent also making Kanako have the same soul abilities.
it's because it doesn't change anything gameplay wise in DR, but if it changes the soul mode you would suddenly pay more attention to it
well part of the reason why you dont pay attention is because its pretty useless to a decent player in the base game.
difficult battles target everybody, and normal encounters are completely non-threatening unless you're out of practice.
Oh yeah not to mention, no AOE attacks against the player makes the game pretty easy even if you only have 2 party members the entire time. Full party heals becomes a lot more broken when only 1 person can be targetted, which I suppose you could make them rarer in response but unless their revivemint rare, which will end up making the item pool feel a lot less varied, you can stockpile them easily
I still dont want to stop between every attack to think what skillset I have, I'd rather my abilities just be consistent the entire fight. Plus I might skip past the target indicator on instinct which while still my fault, gets easier to do if I have to retry a fight multiple times

Undyne the Undying has a very clear indictator of what soul mode you'll be next turn with her spear swing, and you can see the color of your soul in the UI. She will never change it as the attack starts, only when it's over

Now I feel like the opposite would be a problem, though i will readily admit here maybe my ADD is the problem not the game, since the parry involve letting the bullet get that close I might use it on instinct while in yellow mode and put myself in more trouble because I have no control over when I can use what ability. For a superboss or two thats fine, but for an entire game that's going to constantly trip me up, and I dont even have a consistent healling option to fallback on if I run out of items from this
Okay so I just did the Scampton fight (It was actually really good glad it was brought up), I think as long as the attacks that can be parried will not be colored as such when Cole is dodging, I think that's managable. I was under the assumption you could parry ANY attack for some reason in this idea.
Though I have to ask, if parrying still gives TP what are you spending it on without a heal spell? Specifically, on any playstyle that isnt hardcore pacifist, because holy shit I cant imagine doing a fight like this where my only heal is a limited inventory of items. Are shields just Temporary HP or are they like Ceroba's "Negate first hit" shields?
You can see the parry in action as soon as the battle starts, it doesnt really punishes you too much or anything for missing it

The pure soul Chujin talked about being needed was entirely related to making his serum work in the first place. Nothing actually points to it being able to reverse the negative effects of a bad serum.
This correlation between the two somehow came to be most likely because of how the devlopers info dumped all of these details in the span of the last 30 minutes of the game.
it's no secret that absorbing a human soul makes a monster way more powerful so it's not the biggest leap for ceroba to hope that j-j-jamming clover into kanako would either undo integrity's damage or make her strong enough that it didn't matter
that said it still has nothing to do with chujin's original plan and seems more like ceroba and/or the devs trying to desperately work with what they already had planned
