How would you compare demon's souls (ps3) to dark souls 1?

I just beat ds1 for the first time recently and i have extremely mixed feelings on it. Demons looks appealing to me but is it worth getting a ps3

it's good. more consistent than dark souls in terms of level quality. certainly not worth buying a ps3 for unless you have a dozen other games you want to play. emulate or play the superior PS5 remake. (inb4 autistic screeching)

It's the best Souls game, and actually challenging. DaS nerfed and casualized the whole design.

The survival mechanics do become less intrusive after a while, but you start to get the hang of things anyway. But I can’t fault you for not liking it.

I played snake eater and don't really remember any performance drops...
I didn't play subsistence though, but i remember reading about frame drops in that version.
the game seemed to be a solid 30 for me?
mgs 2 was 60 i know but mgs3 has more detail so it was 30.
if people are gonna knock bloodborne for being 24 fps dropping to like 18 during some bossfights (camerabeast paarl comes to mind) i think 30fps in mgs3 is fine.

            emulate, lol.

Yeah I should have clarified, subsistence had it bad. You’re right that the OG wasn’t terrible performance-wise, but it’s just nice having everything smooth in the HD Collection.

It's a slower game but you're supposed to make heavy use of cqc and other new mechanics like camo or throwing items to devise your own unique ways through levels. I think its a lot better than 1&2 because you can be more tactical.

DaS Black folk won't admit it, but DeS is basically the same thing, just without so many elevators that lead you back to Firelink Shrine. Of course, elevators to Firelink Shrine make DaSBlack folk bust in their pants, so they don't care for that. If you liked DaS and didn't particularly care about the elevators to Firelink Shrine, you will like DeS. I prefer DeS but they are both excellent, DS3 is the best in the souls series anyway

DeS was fine, but it also has a lit of flaws. The game is too easy, you don't even need to forge your weapons or even care about your stats too much, since you'll probably be curbstomping every single boss and encounter first try, but the mine area is moronic because if you don't have magic or a magic weapon, you'll be dealing shit damage to the bosses. The areas are also easy because no matter how many obstacles you face, you'll always have like a million healing items on you so there's barely any sense of danger. Also, the game just abruptly ends. After beating the levels, I expected an extra area to be unlocked, but no you're taken right to the ending. World Tendency is pure jank, it's a neat feature, but in the end, you'll just end up killing yourself in the Nexus whenever you kill a boss just so you don't lock yourself out of some weapons. There's a lot of soul (Maiden Astrea, following that fat bastard through boletaria, general atmosphere, etc), but in actual gameplay, it falls flat for some parts of it. The Allant fight is kino though

  11. 4 months ago
    Anonymous

It was an experimental game compared to Dark Souls 1. Most of the bosses feel like a puzzle and almost none of them require you to try as hard to beat as in your average DS3/Bloodborne/Elden Ring boss. It also has the nice feeling of never feeling like any specific boss is designed to shut down your build through resistances. Like difficulty wasn't as big of a priority as it was for the modern games. Levels are designed linearly, you aren't really retreading ground unless you are grinding, resulting in there being very little unused space. The games soundtrack is also pretty unique, not just orchestras going off like the rest of the series.

Depends on what you didn't like about ds1 on whether or not you'd like Demon's Souls. They aren't dramatically different, if you liked one you'll like the other. You must've liked it at least enough to beat it, unless you're one of those masochistic "I have to finish the game or else my opinion doesn't count" types. Ds1 takes a pretty sharp dive in quality after Anor Londo and basically hits rock bottom for the entire experience at Lost Izalith. That doesn't happen with Demon's, its quality is consistent all throughout the game.

Though it is extremely experimental in some aspects, namely the slightly obtuse method for obtaining boss weapons, which is the only reasonable way you're going to get a strong weapon without grinding for ores. The bosses for the most part are extremely easy compared to ds1 and most are gimmick fights of some sort. Since you beat ds1 you're probably not gonna die more than once or twice if at all on many of the bosses besides a couple outliers.

World tendency is a silly gimmick that for the most part doesn't really affect your playthrough in any meaningful way unless you get pure white or pure black, which you probably won't. Healing is sorta broken cuz the game throws grass at you and you can basically carry 50+ extra health bars with you. Magic is kind of uninspired but equally broken for the same reason, it's easy to farm mana replenishing items instead of only having a limited number of casts between bonfires.

If you get tired of one area you can always dip and go to another thanks to the archstones and nexus hub area, it's not a giant interconnected world that requires traveling.

The servers got shut down so if you wanna play with other people your only options are playing the remaster or emulating it. Emulating worked fine for me and I even got invaded once which I won but I had trouble invading others and getting summoned myself.

Demon definitely has the easiest bosses.
Half are easy as frick. And only 2 are somewhat difficult.
Compare that to any other game in the franchise.

There are a few bosses in DeS that I've never died too, some are gimmick bosses, and others have a secret that trivializes them (like turning off your footsteps for the blind boss or finding a flame resistant shield to use against the flame lurker.)
The rest can be tough but not as hard as the average Dark Souls boss.
Also your first game will be the hardest, and a lot of people played Dark Souls 1 before Demons.

Dark souls bosses are all easier on average the only exception is the DLC, and I despise how people list off strategies or tools for trivializing bosses while acting as if the same thing doesn't exist for Dark Souls. I doubt you had the sense to find and use those items on your own and if you used a guide for demon's souls it opens up the strategy guides for everything in Dark Souls. And that doesn't even account for world tendency which everyone suicides in the nexus so they can make it white.

Unironically? The controls. They are now standard controls for modern games. They certainly weren't back then. Player centered 3D camera was also something so struggling to be mastered on both the developer and player side of things back in 2009. While much of it was unfamiliar back then, it is now common that the first hurdle to playing is a lot smaller now.

DaS had better world building and exploration.
Estus Flask was better than heaps of grass.
    DeS human bosses were better.
Combat was pretty much the same, weapon variety too.
Mana was better than set number of casts.
I put them neck and neck, honestly.

It's like how Oblivion is to Skyrim. You'll enjoy both for their own qualities.

    >mixed feelings

why? you will get better answers by stating what was not ideal and what was. all the other games are either very different or slightly different and none of them have so much the same that they're near identical

I played snake eater and don't really remember any performance drops...
I didn't play subsistence though, but i remember reading about frame drops in that version.
the game seemed to be a solid 30 for me?
mgs 2 was 60 i know but mgs3 has more detail so it was 30.
if people are gonna knock bloodborne for being 24 fps dropping to like 18 during some bossfights (camerabeast paarl comes to mind) i think 30fps in mgs3 is fine.

      emulate, lol.

it's the nioh of souls where you play 4 separate maps.

it's a nice game, especially when you're starved for souls combat, dark souls is just vastly superior where you can enjoy the whole exploration of the world.

It's quite different but also similar in many ways, DS clearly takes a lot of its ideas from DeS. I liked DeS, it's a game with an interesting atmosphere and setting, overall it's quite easy and basic compared to later Souls games (DS1 is like this as well, to be fair). DeS is also a level-based game essentially, it's not an open / interconnected world like DaS. You can choose the order in which you play the various "worlds" to some degree but in each individual world you go through levels one by one. There is no bonfire-equivalent mechanic, you teleport into a level and have to complete it by reaching and beating the boss so if you frick up it can be quite punishing as you have to start over from the beginning, even though like I said I don't consider the level of difficulty to be particularly high overall (there are some difficulty spikes here and there).

    >is it worth getting a ps3
Nah, definitely not. The game emulates great on RPCS3, you can even play it at 4k 60FPS and so on with no issues whatsoever. There's really no reason to play it on a real PS3 if you're not some real hardware purist for nostalgia goggle purposes.

online shenanigans and asymetric 3v1 multiplayer are the best part of these games

    DeS?
Pretty much worse in every way compared to DS1. And yet somehow I have played through DeS probably 2x the amount of times compared to DS1 and I couldn't for the life of me explain why. Hope this helps.

    >I just beat ds1 for the first time recently and i have extremely mixed feelings on it. Demons looks appealing to me but is it worth getting a ps3

it was the reason I bought a PS3 10 years ago and never regret it
it's by far their best souls-game
bloodborne is on the same level

I remember trying to emulate this on my PC. I was surprised because it ran so well, then I broke a barrel an fps dropped to single digits.

This game was so magical when you played it first time without knowing anything about it.
I cant imagine it working today.

if you don't like DaS, you wouldn't probably like DeS.
Try ER or Sekiro out if DeS doesn't work for ya as well.

If your PC is decent you can emulate it. Demon Souls is pretty fun, but it is a bit different to Dark Souls. On your first playthrough, you're kind of expected to build around the bosses, rather than build a certain way. I recommend giving it a play.

Demon's Souls is a better game in every way. More novel ideas and superior atmosphere. DS1 is for the most part a rehash of DeS for the xbox audience with a worse execution plus it's blatantly unfinished.
