I'll give you an honest and detailed answer rather than just telling you you're dumb.

the "liminal space" spooky phenomenon comes from a combination of visual things. You will not be able to get the same idea purely from description, because it depends on image framing, color palette, clutter or lack thereof, out of place objects, recollection and recognition. It's like a form of negatively-tainted nostalgia; something that feels like it should be right, but due to extenuating circumstances is instead lacking qualities that the nostalgia would make positive.

Plus, a large amount of the sense of horror comes from a suggestion that there Might Be Something. Once you introduce something, the lingering dread of the mysterious and unknown is collapsed into a solidified understanding of what's there, and it loses the mystery that makes those images spooky. There are questions of how one got there - a "liminal space" image often makes you wonder how one gets there and where it goes. In a tabletop game your players know how they got there, which means that half of the spatial mystery is solved.

TL;DR not every form of horror works in every medium. Run what you can, don't try to make something that's spooky in some unexplained still images work in a descrptive, non-visual interactive medium.

And now I've actually explained things as best I can, I'll stop holding back.
        >Not everything from your zoomer spooky video games and youtube iceberg videos works in a tabletop game. When your elders say that we've tried a lot of things and don't think your idea will work we're not just dismissing you out of hand, you dense little nugget. Dip yourself in the well-aged sauce of our wisdom and don't do dumbfrick shit like this. And if you're new to Ganker, lurk and learn what things mean.

this anon gets it. Its a very visual genre, something that does not transfer well to tabletop.

What is you're actual idea? How do you intend to describe what your group sees besides "You see more yellow walls like the last 1500 feet" every 10 minutes?
Is the liminal spaces the whole campaign or is it just a part?

No i was planning on it being a forest that loops. kind of like the Blair Witch, and they have to fallow marked trees to get out. its not vary fleshed out but it was a general idea i thought would be nice.

              Anonymous

That's not really a liminal space as much as it's just a really basic puzzle.

                Anonymous

Yeah that's why I was asking how a liminal space would work, because I want to flesh it out more and wanted people to bounce more off of.

For what it's worth, I don't think the "liminal space" idea of endless empty office spaces and pool rooms is completely off-limits for TTRPGs as a kind of abstract survival horror, procedurally generated giga-dungeoncrawl, but I don't think it works for D&D.

D&D characters are too empowered and granted means to handwave their way through problems. Monster? Kill it. Running out of food and water? Goodberry and create water. Injured? Lay on hands. Take away those things and you have very few rules, if any, for really engaging with some kind of surreal pocket dimension where space extends outwards forever.

It works perfectly for B/X, basically that’s what old school D&D is

              Anonymous

thats 10000 times better then what I would consider "liminal" space. Its a solid idea that needs to get fleshed out.
Why is the forest like this?
Is there anyone else in the forest?
Is there any"thing" in the forest?

It wouldn't work at all. It's a dungeon that amounts to wandering around an endless maze of identical rooms until a jumpscare monster finds you.

Didn’t see it was 5e. Make it feel like an old school dungeon crawl by denying rests and forcing them to track their resources and be stingy when replenishing. You’re fitting a square peg in a round hole though.

Ditch the new "endless hallways" take on liminal spaces and go back to the original meaning: the threshold between two defined spaces. Doorways, gates, bridges, the shoreline, twilight, midnight and other such between things. Put an old fencegate out in the middle of a field with a sign saying Keep Closed and make anyone who knows about insist in a panic the party obeys the sign but refuse to speak further. Maybe the party opens it, maybe the mage notices something wrong, maybe they close it in time or not. Maybe the party arrives to find it already open, called to the nearby village just as the killings begin. What exactly it was that slipped through or from where is a mystery, but it's clearly malevolent and infinitely hungry.
Or maybe the party gain ownership of a large house, only there's a door that sometimes opens to elsewhere, if you know how. Someone from the other side certainly does.
