please if you do it to sell, don't spend so much time. i don't even have to search to read stuff like this every day. if it's a business, you analyze your risks, in 1 month have something to show for like this.
and if you have good reception, you continue, if not, don't waste time "fixing" your dream game.

or take the sovl hobby path and have fun.

That's why I take the porn route. I know it'll never make serious money unless I go the patreon whale route, but that takes some serious legwork first. As long as I make one person coom and give back just a little bit to the community that's loved me over the years, it'll be worth it.

Why would you release a game with no audience? First thing you have to do is make sure they are buying your game, how do you spend 3 years working on something and not realize there's no market?

this is hopefuel: even if your game is as bad as an asset flip made over three years with no artistic sensibility, you can find one person a week who is willing to buy and play your game

You can start posting anytime, just be warned that people will never respond to anything that doesn't have shiny graphics or some easily visually understandable gimmick, even if it's a legitimate feat of dev that took weeks/months/years.

Badly, because I keep changing projects and am in endless hell.
Feels like I dont actually enjoy gamedev and only keep trying to do it because no game I can find fills the void I feel, I try an idea, get all the basic systems in place and get a working demo in a test level, and then lose interest as some better idea appears in my head. I'd love to finish a project and wish my brain would stop giving me new ideas all the time (and honestly thinking of the whole thing gives me a huge headache), so I could just batten myself down and grind threw the unfun hell that is development to prove to myself that this wont make me happy either.

Man I was messing with RPGMaker 2003 since it was on sale, and I have a question. Yume Nikki had the ability to do stuff like pressing buttons (like 1), to do a specific action, and I have no idea how they did it. I thought it was something to do with the key input command or something, but I just don’t get how it works, and it feels like there’s no easily digestible tutorials on what they’re used for or how to use them, even for later versions.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few plugins for stuff like MV (I think), but I feel like what I’m after should be possible vanilla, I just don’t know how to manipulate the system properly.

I was faced with a big decision and I decided to bite the bullet and update from Unity 2018 to 2020. I also updated to URP. This has me scared shitless though, as only two minor things broke. I thought I would have had to redo all my shaders, but not only do they work on windows, linux, and mac, they also are working on android despite being broken before. It's going too well and I'm scared there's some massive bug lurking under the water where I can't see it.

The current "meta" for key input processing shit is in a somewhat advanced (for 2k/3) state. I'd focus on doing something to listen for key input in parallel and store that input in a variable so you can use it for other things.

        Anonymous

That doesn't look like a game.

I’ve been messing around with that, but I can’t seem to really figure it out
        >I think you have to be standing on the event to do it
I don’t think that should be it, YN has a mechanic where you can pinch yourself awake from wherever you’re at (except when you’re awake). I dunno, you might be right in a way I can’t comprehend with my current understanding of the system.

          Anonymous

another anon mentioned parallel processing, that seemed to work, just uncheck all the keys except numbers or you'll lock yourself in the game

Hm, I got it to at least cause the text to pop up after talking to an NPC, but that's not quite what I'm going for, and I also can't turn it off. But it's more than what I had before.

Hm, I’ll try that. I need to get it to work in the first place, before I can try out my idea. Thank you.

This is a dangerous practice that is sure to lead to classic RPG Maker jank issues.
The better and more modern way to handle key input in 2k/3 is
            >checking for input yes/no on an individual basis for each key that you'll listen for and keeping that info in an array
            >secondary array that you + or - based on whether the keys in array a are pressed or not
            >optional: feed the results into one or more variables that store the current key input (based on how many simultaneous inputs you'll need, but one or 2 is usually OK)
Now you have control over each individual key for custom input checking, like repeat inputs, input only on key press, input only on key release, input on both, etc.

I'll need time to parse what's going on here, but I greatly appreciate all the help in this thread. RPGMaker felt rather smooth sailing, and then with this, the difficulty shot up by a ton, so I really needed the help.

                Anonymous

The gist of it is this
                >you have an array of variables where you are checking every key you'll be listening for
                >you run a loop that "points through" that array and checks if it's 0, or not
                >a secondary array where you store a "timer" for each key is being pointed through at the same time
                >if a key's value in the first array = 0 (not being pressed), the key's timer has -1 applied to it
                >if a key's value in the first array is !=0, the key's timer has +1 applied to it
                >using the information in the timers, you can ascertain whether a key has just been pushed (=1), just been released (=-1) and you can use the further +- values for other purposes
                visualization of this here:

Don't worry about this causing performance issues, because this process is inexpensive to perform constantly.
You might want to make a common event that forces the secondary array to a positive value that doesn't trigger any of your key shit later on to avoid doubled inputs or conflicts, but that's a different story for other times.

I think I'm getting what you're saying now, I was finding it a bit difficult to apply it to what my goal was, but your explanation helped. Thank you.

I would start with things like spills/environmental damage due to machinery falling apart/lack of maintenance. You have pipes and stuff, but the next logical step is what function they serve? where do pipes lead to typically? Reservoirs for oil/liquid gathering, typically lead to large-scale refineries. Pumps would be necessary to lift, though not necessary to animate if abandoned/disrepair.
For wild-life, cacti and google. It isnt uncommon for wildlife like snakes to make homes inside pipes that no longer function.

you can make a pretty solid game focused on very simple mechanics if those mechanics work well and are paired with scenarios that let you play with them in neat ways

                Anonymous

well how do I come up with such a mechanic? I think I prefer complex games as a player and it leads me to come up with ideas for complex games

it's hard to come up with small game ideas that seem worth even prototyping

                Anonymous

complex games are made up of component parts that can work as smaller games, and smaller games can work as components of a complex game. look at Resident Evil 4 and Tetris
if your idea for a complex game is any good and not "you can do anything" tier then you can scale back and focus on a part of it that works on its own

rpg game with small puzzles and battles like pokemon. I'm an artist so I will probably make all the art (including tilesets).
I heard that it's a pain in the ass to work with tiles (and graphics overall) in RPG Maker that are slightly bigger than the standard ones

          Anonymous

          >slightly bigger
sort of, i rely heavily on these tilesheets where you can lay images over the standard tiles. You can use them to make your own larger tiles as long as theyre in intervals of 32. so when i have a repeating tree pattern i want, but the trees are 96 pixels tall i have to use this. it takes up alot of room on the tilesheet but that doesnt really matter, you can use as many tilesheets as you want in your game.

question, and this is just for games in general, but at what point do you all consider systems like "mp" to be anti-fun? In my game design doc I've mulled over the idea, and the more and more I think about it, the more I can recall MP as a resource has been more annoying than helpful, running out and not having healing items so you just have to do the non-fun attacks until the battle is over, a lot of the times it's more of a time waster than something that actually adds to strategy.
Or in rpgs, use the high mp attack, heal mp with an item, use it again, etc. Mp isn't even really looped into the flow of battle well to where it feels like a sort of afterthought that people add because it HAS to be in an rpg. My idea isn't an Rpg, but it's very Rpg Adjacent, so I've thought about that stuff a lot.
Do you think more games would be better or even the same with replacing MP with like, waiting a certain amount of time, or turns, or would you say I'm kinda missing something about how it's used in gaming? Just curious 🙂
Obvious answer is depends on the game, but I wanna know people's actual thoughts on stuff like that, not the basic b***h neutral answer.

Happens to the best of us, good luck on your new project.

        Anonymous

I like the system that dragon warrior monsters does, where mp only limits you in the beginning of the game. its another way for you to feel you've progressed, where you go from being able to use a strong attack a couple times verses as much as you want.
its pretty early on in the game where you get enough mp to cover you for every battle, so it never gets annoying.

Castlevania OoE: every attack, magic or physical sap your mp which regenerate quickly after. This allows fine balancing to avoid spamming strongest weapons with a low level character.

Mostly studying now since I have to retake something I just barely didn't pass. Made the main mechanic for a new level a couple of hours ago that has platforms that turn on or off automatically (5 seconds off, then 2 seconds off and then repeat). I'll make the boss for it tomorrow.

on a related note did anybody here ever use the shit they learned in those mandatory uni math courses? No way I'm ever using linear algebra ever again beyond knowing what a vector is and putting it in unity, same with all the other advanced math shit. And yet college is basically made up of 80% moron math shit and 20% actual programming

The dot product and the cross product are important to know about. The former is useful for a lock on system.

dot product/scalar product/scalar projection = measures similarity of two vectors
        dot(a,b) = value
        dot(a,b) = ||a|| ||b||cos(theta) = magnitude (length) of a * magnitude (length) of b * cos(angle between a and b)
        cos(angle between a and b) = a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y/ (sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2))

        2D
        dot(a,b) = a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y
        dot(a,b) = sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2) * cos(agnle between a and b) = sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2)* (a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y/ (sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2*~~
        cos(angle between a and b) = (a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y/ (sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2*~~
        3D
        dot(a,b) = a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y + a.z*b.z
        dot(a,b) = sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2+a.z^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2+b.z^2) * cos(agnle between a and b)= sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2+a.z^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2+b.z^2) * (a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y+a.z*b.z / (sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2+a.z^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2+b.z^2*~~
        cos(angle between a and b) = (a.x*b.x + a.y*b.y+a.z*b.z / (sqrt(a.x^2+a.y^2+a.z^2) * sqrt(b.x^2+b.y^2+b.z^2*~~

it's not the biggest thing which allows me to retake it as much as needed, just a wait between trys. You really don't need that many math things for coding unless you want to deal with physics or random doing things like more complex bullet patterns since they have to be spesific

You can retake your courses as much as needed? wtf?
I can try three times, third fail and I'm out. If I succeed I can try one single time to improve my grade, the very next semester.

Speaking of blender, I'm getting a totally new computer soon since mine is so fricking old. Do blender and gamedev have different needs for GPU/CPU? Seems like Blender is more designed for Nvidia cards is all I can see as a beginner.

my computer is 12 years old and can still handle blender, you can use whatever

Well I figure if I'm getting a new everything anyway, it wouldn't hurt to pick parts that are more geared towards what I want to do, not that I'm planning anything too graphically intensive, that is.

Currently creating one of the overworlds (supposed to be a scarlet red forest) of my game, I just finished making my own texture trimsheet and tested it on the current overworld model in Blender. I think the results look better than I anticipated, I would like to find a way to reduce tiling repetition outside of adding more tiles. I found this video from 3 years ago which looks effective but I don't think the nodes used would translate appropriately in my case. Any help or feedback would be appreciated.

Maybe, im really just trying to get gud at drawing again in general so I can visualize my game better. I'd like to make a shader to apply my hatching style to 3d, so maybe I could also use these drawings for dialog portraits.
