How's your playdate game coming along? You can program your game using Lua, C, or a mix of the two. You can also make a game in browser right now:
https://play.date/pulp/
Most of the playdate's library sucks, so if any of you make a decent game, there's a good chance Panic will accept it as an official submission to their catalog.
DMT Has Friends For Me Shirt $21.68 |
Has about the same appeal.
FPBP
Tiger is unironically reprinting some of the more popular units since 2020
>cuck crank
No thanks I'm an adult
I'm not a wiener snorting hipster so I don't particularly care about this console and its stupid crank.
>B-B-BUT YOU CARED ENOUGH TO POST
Just enough to call you a homosexual
Someone give me the qrd. I've seen this being shilled on Ganker a lot but never heard of it once outside. What's with the crank lmao so you have to charge the battery?
>What's with the crank
Joysticks are too mainstream so these guys put a crank on it
https://twitter.com/playdate/status/1760005950981931501
That game looks absolutely horrendous. This is what they're advertising with??
That's why I'm telling Ganker to make a game. There's very little competition and I know there are game devs here
Why in God's name would I want to? The game will go out to like 17 people. I can live without $100 for 10 hours of effort
>Shilled this hard on Ganker
>People don't like it
Ummm how dare you, guys? It's NICHE. That means it's WORTH the $200 pricetag and $6 mini games
>The game will go out to like 17 people. I can live without $100 for 10 hours of effort
they've sold 70k units and devs have been known to make a couple thousand dollars. It's not money you can live off but it's more than $100 (if your game is decent)
>Look at top games
>A boring Tetris game
>A slow, barely challenging rhythm game
>Guess who
>Galaga
>Asteroid
>A math game
I think I'm fine not appealing to man children
You can't do any better
>rhythm game
>no music
what the hell
That actually made laugh. There's people who spent money for that kind of quality damn.
it's an analog input device that reads angle of rotation
is a hipster console which gimmicks are its old-school monochrome screen, the crank used to play games, and creating games for the console so others can play them.
looks like crap
How dare a niche product exist. Did you get mad at the Arduboy too?
Someone should port Super deep throat to this thing. Using the crank to choke the girl would be pretty funny.
My Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 3080 can barely run super deep throat. I think it's fry this things processor and melt the crank
I'm good with my softmodded 3ds
i have never seen any hobbyist community miss the fricking point of something as hard as i have seen Ganker miss the point of the playdate
everyone that thinks it's intended to be, or marketed as, a nintendo competitor should be lined up and shot
>It's not a main line console like the others okay????!!!!!?!?
>It just costs as much as a switch lite!
>Or $30 less than the switch!!!
>Or 2/3 the price of a switch OLED, OKAYTTT??????!
Cry harder. Maybe it'll lube your cuck crank
I have had more fun with it than most indie slop FOTM people have promoted here
i'm going to prove i'm not your strawman by running in and screaming that i am, in fact, your strawman given flesh
People miss the point because of the price tag. If it cost as much as a chinese gameboy emulator everyone would be on board
What’s the point then genius? It’s not a cheap way to distribute indie games (more expensive than PC, highly restrictive hardware specs) it’s not some infinite battery life minimalist console for survival preppers or something (stock Gameboy has longer battery life), it’s not cheap (you can get a switch lite with more games and universally higher stats for the same price), it’s not appreciably small or specially efficient (can’t do anything your phone can’t do and takes up additional space), what the hell IS the niche?? Why wouldn’t indie devs prefer old consoles, emulators, things with itch.io and a userbase in the double digits? You’re mocking people for not understanding the niche so clearly you know what this does better than other options, right?
NTA, but the way I see it the niche is the unique control scheme and being a faux retro console that has official support for easy acquisition, development, and distribution of games. It definitely isn't a big niche, but it's something.
I haven't got one myself though, so this is just me guessing why others have gotten it.
>What’s the point then genius?
My brother was ine of the morons who preordered this thing. As far as I've seen, there's next to nothing on this system besides a gimmicky fishing game and a lot of mediocre puzzle games. He loved it for about 3 months, then forgot it existed
At least it has more games than the PS5
Get out of here anon you don't want any of this shit!
this game is fun lol
we don't like fun here
Why the frick people want to use the bloody Lua ?
It's a shit language
I gave up on making a game after putting in multiple dozen hours. The C API is genuine dogshit and the console developers/publisher completely missed the mark on what makes tinkering with embedded software fun. The docs are dogshit, half of the functions will straight out crash your device due to undocumented invariants and they take years to fix obvious shit that any competent programmer could take care of in 5 minutes worth of effort. They only care about the Lua API because that's the only thing their target audience of they/them California söydevs are mentally capable enough to use.
They should have open sourced the API and docs, at least that way I could actually fix their shit (I would unironically >do it for free)
you should unironically describe your experience and send it to panic
At this point I burnt myself out enough on the console to not even care anymore. They would probably just cry and call me a bully. I'd rather someone with an actually good sense of developer UX made an actually good handheld in a similar vein.
Mars After Midnight when Lucas? Pretty much half the reason I got this thing in the first place.
Also the lack of backlight is annoying.
>Also the lack of backlight is annoying.
skill issue
How does TE consistently manage to produce such ugly unappealing looking products?
>there's a good chance Panic will accept it as an official submission to their catalog.
do I get paid if that happens
Panic takes a cut of every purchase but you can still sell your game elsewhere if you choose to, even if you are accepted
oh the games for this are not even free? lmaoooooooooo
you get 24 games with purchase but after that the games are paid (outside of free itch games)
>people make game Directs for this thing
>400x240 1bit display
>slower than $15 raspberry pi
>$200 plus tip
