100% true. I keep finding old games, playing them, and enjoying them a lot more than the new things. Technology got better but everything else went to shit.

yes, i just recently beat jersey devil for the PS1 and had a decent time with it, it would've been more enjoyable back in the day i guess. tried vampire hunter d for psx, it sucked massive wieners, hell night was kind of cool, klonoa was brilliant and im going to be playing in cold blood soon. the classics are classics for a reason though, re3 definitely features in my top 20 psx games list.

I gave the OG versions of RE1-2-3 a try in like 2022 and they were amazing fun, it actually made me wonder if I like 1 OG or REmake more even though I grew up with GC REmake, that's just how good they still are

        Literally me.
I love the hubs and npc's in them with their little stories.
Music is great, levels are fun and E 102 story was surprisingly kino.

        Pretty much.
I had never played Tomb Raider games before, so I have zero nostalgia for them, but playing the remasters with tank controls has been eye-opening.
I was so used to platformers just autocorrecting all movement that this type of platforming where you need precision and it's slow paced and methodical feels incredibly fresh and far more engaging than modern stuff like Uncharted.
Being high up and looking down actually feels vertigo-inducing now that there's real risk.
Also the atmosphere is pure kino, it feels kinda lonely and even spooky to play these games.

Last time I played VC I was surprised how short it is really. As a kid I would just mess around, drive around the city and murder people and cops, but as a adult I was focused on finishing missions.

Word. I played Morrowind years after Skyrim and it felt great.

I generally only play MMO's (unfortunately), and of the dozens of MMOs out there I mostly just play WoW Classic (2004), and Oldschool RuneScape (also 2004, sort of). Even FFXIV (ARR) is 11 years old.

It's hard to tell if older MMOs are genuinely better, or if it's just nostalgia because I grew up with these games. Or if more recent releases are actually just shit.
So if it's them or me. It feels like it must be them.

I'm in the same boat as you. I mostly play MMOs nowadays. I'll play every dogshit MMO that comes out, Korean, Chinese, gacha, I'll try it. But at the end of the day I'm gonna hop on WoW to do keys with friends and when WoW is in its downturn I'll hop on XIV to be social.
The problem these newer games have is that they're trying to break into a genre that has already thousands of hours of content with a game that requires thousands of players for the game to function. For there to be a market, a supply and demand etc.

      >WoW
has content, has competition(logs), has all of your friends
      >XIV
has a lot of story, has competition(logs), has your friends, has mods, has cooming
      >OSRS
has autistic amounts of grind you can do, constant progression, has your friends.

The one thing that all of these games have going for them is that they all have your friends. So it's probably not the MMOs being shit, it's the fact that your friends are also playing them. If you like something, shill it to your friends.

look remakes like re4 and persona 3 reload I enjoyed. but gta remastered trilogy is actual trash dude. like not even meming here. its dogshit and not worth your money and the older games are unironically worth your money/emulation/pirating.

The appeal of an open world game (if they don't succeed at having actual good writing or gameplay systems), is scope, and that inevitably ages terribly, because what seemed huge in the past inevitably gets dwarfed by even bigger games.

GTA games are shit, and hold up terribly though.

  15. 3 months ago

    I mostly agree,
but there are a lot of things that have aged like milk, or been overthrown by new better games and gameplay

like for example, most old RPG or MMO aren't too good, the tab targeting and/or clumsy combat is AWFUL.
The only thing carrying older RPG and MMO's is their writing, story and setting
