I don't know how much they want you to feel attached to the characters anyway, they all seem kinda like pieces of shit.
I think another key thing with L4D is you just find about more about their lives and personalities as you just play the game since a lot of it is revealed through just conversations the characters have with each other.
Even Left4Dead 2 that went a little goofier with its cast still has a better understanding of simple but still stand out characters. Those two games in general are lightning in a bottle miracles of a very specific last hurrah era of game design from characters, dialogue, level design, pace and game feel. The closest I think anything else has gotten is the Tide games if the devs weren't greedy dumb fricks.
Can you really call it lightning in a bottle if valve pulled lightning in a bottle for lik 6 games straight.
Fair enough, those two games came out right in the peak of Valve's performance in gamemaking.
Vermintide 1 was great, the characters were all deeply flawed and some even hated each other, they were forced to work together through circumstance and as you played it felt like the characters were growing closer as they would randomly drop one of hundreds of dialogues during quiet moments in missions and you would learn more about them.
In Vermintide 2 it feels like a lot of that is lost and you're more like a team of superheroes teleporting around the world to deal with problems.
L4D’s real secret sauce is that they were designed and written by the funniest team the industry has ever had, coming right off of Team Fortress 2 and Portal. Both Left 4 Dead casts have 10/10 barks and banter. The real secret sauce is that there was no secret sauce, just pure talent and execution.

Judging from this trailer alone, it seems to be some blend of LawBreakers, PayDay 2 and Overwatch. You have heroes with abilities that steal shit from PvE NPC's, and then fight against each other to extract with the loot?
Other than that, this game's art and writing direction is EVERYTHING that I hate about this era of gaming. It looks like Watch Dogs, Saints Row 2022, Borderlands, Fortnite, and Destiny all bred each other in a man-train and then this thing hatched from the fetid egg that dropped out the back of the congo line.

There's a Dreamcast game called Segagaga (SGGG for short). It's a game about Sega losing market share to the new dominant company Dogma (Sony). They end up hiring kids off the street to turn the company around. The whole thing is very self-referential, self-deprecating and even a bit of gallows humor since it was made when it was clear there wouldn't be a Dreamcast 2.
I mention this because I can only assume this game started off with a similar idea. Some tongue and cheek humor about Sega being some intergalactic megacorp that runs the world and people just want to steal merch.

Gunfights in zero g are awful and only work in single player set pieces. The game also looks like a worse version of The Finals which itself isn’t great.

piling random shit onto a characters' backstory does not make them better. there is nothing added to the characters by making them black or gay or ballerinas or whatever. el silbon (using male pronouns, for some reason) is not changed any by having a southamerican background. she is not an actual chupacabra, she is not a monster hunter using parts of mythological creatures as weaponry, she is a basic sniper character who will shout something in spanish every now and then and make random cultural references that have no actual bearing on her character, the characters she's fighting or any other part of the game. there is no real reason she is loud and obnoxious and not just a normal sniper whose is also hispanic. and there is absolutely zero eason she would be fighting over merch of 80's and 90's imagery on a space station.
contrast this with a local favorite minority like the demoman. him being a scot is incorporated into gameplay with his shields and swords. him being black leads to his own feelings of ostracization, something that feasibly adds to his choice of a high-risk career path of a demolitions expert which normal people would avoid. he is a freak of nature, he isnt depicted as brave and empowered but rather a broken man pursuing dangerous work. his odd elements either play into his actual gameplay or justify why he's doing the things he does.
there is no justifiable reason why an insane ballerina is stealing funko pops for the sheer thrill of it, there is no reason why a black space pirate is stealing old sega consoles, hell no character involved with this game seems to have any actual reason for wanting to participate other than the annoying nerds.

I think half of what makes the TF2 mercs work is that they aren't squeaky clean. They're mostly a bunch of pretty capable dirtbags that know exactly how nasty they are (except Scout, who's got an ego bigger than the sun). I can't think of a recent hero shooter IP that didn't try and make most of their roster just the bestest good guys/tortured souls who couldn't control their fate.

Their backstories are often that of some super genius doctor/hacker/astonaut/mechanic who invented infinite free energy and solved all the impossible math puzzles and saved all the puppies at age 9 before they graduated at MIT, Yale and Harvard at the same time.
Then it gets paired with a "personality" that is often nothing more than vaguely (and poorly) alluding to a tacked on racial/sexual identity, a massive ego, plus cookie cutter snarky butthole dialogue that makes them sound like a teenage schoolgirl.
A lot of them across all of these hero shooters end up coming off even more abrasive and deplorable than the TF2 cast of scumbag morons.

The frick is this? They saw Lawbreakers and wanted to one-up it in terms of terrible character designs? Hyenas is a horrible name too. Arena FPS are dead. Creative Assembly is a fricking RTS studio isn't it. Why are they making a shooter in the first place? The entire game seems like its target audience is solely resetera.

I think it'd be for the tumblr crowd, if they still existed in full force. But now I'm not so sure. Most of those types of "people" also don't play videogames they just watch streamers play them. So marketing to them is a bad strategy.
This is the type of thing where, if they asked the audience "would you play this game?" they'd get a ton of votes that say yes, and then none of those people would actually play it, they just said yes because they agree with the politics of the game and want it to succeed but don't want to put in the work to help it succeed.

It's even worse than that. Tumblr's entire subculture has been long dead for years at this point and none of the groups that replaced the community barely have anything in common with tumblr outside of being genderspecial weirdos. It has absolutely nothing to do with either of those things. Jagged Alliance 3 is much more in line with either.

Say what you want about shit like Overwatch gameplay, but at least their designs all look coherent to their setting and are immediately recognizable as being from that game as they all have a coherent design style, these all look like random fricking skins from any other modern game, nothing is tying them together.

There aren't just text blurbs that say "this character is smart and charismatic", they show it through their actions. Everyone has an intuitive understanding of the Scout's personality and that he's a wienery butthole, but they didn't need to say that. The "meet the class" series was a great way of doing this.

I hate to bring up overwatch but in the early days of it, they had little cinematics to help showcase characters, they also give you the personality really heavily in game with their actions and voice lines
In comparison this is just lame exposition dump. They couldn't set it up so that we learn about the characters as we play, and the front-and-center is their abilities and skills?
