This, the mods really should just insta-ban those "beloved game was actually.. le bad!" posts.
They're only making them because they crave attention.

You are correct, RE2 is mostly a copy-paste of RE1 but with most things done worse. It's only better on a surface level, with the increase of graphical quality technically speaking and the number of zombies at once in a room

      You are not correct

        >RE2 is mostly a copy-paste of RE1
I don't think anyone really knew exactly why RE1 had been such a hit and they were scared to stray too far from the formula. It's not a bad game by any means but I don't like it as much as the first one. It's even a regression in some ways, especially with how linear it is and how simple the puzzles are even when compared to the pretty basic ones in RE1.

I have fond memories of RE2 then I'm disappointed whenever I actually play it. Turns out all the parts I like are at the start of the game.

I still agree with this though. RE3 bores me to death and I've never been able to finish it

its main problem is the zombies do not feel dangerous like they did in the first game. you can get bitten like 10 times, plus you have tons of healing items on top of that. yeah the puzzles are moronic but they mostly are in the original as well.

      >plus you have tons of healing items on top of that
Tons of ammo as well. Before RE4 this used to be the point where Resident Evil became more "actiony"

+ you get sound cues in the forms of moaning
in re1 the only sound from zombies barring them getting shot were footsteps

Here's how it is. Res 1 is better than 2, but 2 is more fun. It's exactly the same for the terminator films. Any other opinion is pleb tier.

It almost feel like a action arcade game to me, and that's a good thing, pop the game in and get it done in less than two hours, perfection

Yeah, RE2 works because it maintains most of the exploration based gameplay from RE1, adds an action focus while still limiting your early resources enough to maintain tension, and adds a layer of polish over the visuals & story. The main problem with RE2 is that most releases didn't have a difficulty above Normal mode so its difficult to get much of a challenge out of the Leon/Claire scenarios after your initial playthrough.

I'm so fricking tired of this shitty ass Ganker trend of morons shitting on the second (usually more popular) game of a series and jerking off how much better 1 was. It's fricking everywhere these days and it's so stupid.

Every /vr/ RE thread is full of contrarians who hate RE2 & think REmake is an affront against God.

The fanbase desperately needs to stop acting like RE1.5 was some gem that was unfairly stolen from us. The leaked build has the majority of its level design intact & is massively inferior to what we got.

      Anonymous

at least to me based on what we know 1.5 would have been pretty promising but only in theory. our build is too early to make that call. i get the vibe it would have been a better first time experience then 2 but 2 probably would have had better replay value which matters more. also its not that black and white. if we had a more fleshed out 1.5 build imagine the 1.5 and 2 fusion/quality of life/content hacks. both games locations shuffled between each other in randomizers.

        Anonymous

I avoid judging the actual 1.5 scenario design too much since the build has a lot of placeholders & bits that would likely be ironed out, but I feel fairly confident commenting on the environment design.

The fundamental flaw in RE1.5 is that the base levels the game had to be built around were mostly trash. The RPD was the most interesting & even that was a dark samey looking mess that was too small to serve as anything beyond an opening area. 1.5 had a much heavier focus on the industrial environments of the Factory, Sewers & Labs, the latter of which was the longest area mostly due to partially reused assets. Shifting the primary focus to a much expanded RPD, reworking the Sewers/Factory to provide memorable set pieces, & streamlining the Labs into its unique areas gave RE2 the pacing & feel that made it so successful, something that the 1.5 design would have been largely inadequate for.

people say the station in 2 is bigger but i get the sense that their both around the same size. 1.5 isnt plagued with a massive main lobby allowing the 2nd and 3rd floors to have more rooms. 2 only had a library but 1.5 had an infirmary and shooting range. also two basements. i think the issue was that because there were more rooms it gets too samey but all of that could have been changed on a dime like what they did to the chiefs office a build before ours. the sewer is tough. the completion hack shows more than i was expecting down there. the factory was a step down in all aspects in 2. the lab i might agree with you but it might have been more about revisiting the location after it falls into ruin.
ultimately i think a overhaul was a good idea but not as extreme as they did it.

It’s like this with every game. People alway talk about how the prototype is the incredible soulful masterpiece they scrapped for no good reason. Same shit with Ocarina of Time

      Anonymous

I agree with your opinion but you are picking the wrong reasons for it. Level design is more than just backgrounds, it also entails gameplay progression and enemy placement and there is nothing to assert from that based on barely functional build that seems mostly for testing and showcase purposes. We'd have to see how the final build played to even get a glimpse of that and even that it could still be tweaked around before the actual release when it went into QA. My issue with Biohazard 2 Prototype is the A.I programming - it's definitely a step backwards compared to that of Resident Evil 1 and it would be a lot of work to go over many of its mechanics to make it feel good to play like the retail product. I honestly can't imagine a fun and challeging 4th Survivor or Extreme Battle on that skeleton.

Very shit take OP. The A/B scenarios gave the game a ton more replay value. The release version of RE2 is way better than 1.5 you are smoking crack.

      Anonymous

      >The A/B scenarios gave the game a ton more replay value

It's the contrary. In RE1 you have what, 3-5 different scenarios that can unfold with each character? And they depend on what the player does and choses.

In RE2 you only have two scenario per character, that are completely static and not player dependant.

The A-B scenario system is a rip-off, aimed to make it look like there is more when there is actually less, and people STILL fall for it these days.

Who cares about those choices in RE1 when only the best choices leads to the best ending? I always feel empty getting the bad endings in survival horror games. It feels like I failed when that happens. Only exception is SH2 which seemed to do it right imo.

          Anonymous

The point was "replay value". For one thing, there are several possible paths that lead to the best endings, so even getting to the best ending if that's all you care about isn't a static thing. Secondly, getting there and exploring and figuring out the choices is replay value also. There are some cutscenes with Chris and Rebecca I had never seen in my life despite having beaten the game 50+ times.

            Anonymous

I've been playing RE1 since it came out and I didn't even know there's a scenario where Chris has to get the serum for himself if the snake bites him until a year or two ago. There's actually 3 possible outcomes there based on where you meet Rebecca and what you tell her to do. Either you play as her and get it, you go get it yourself, or you pass out and wake up in the medical room with her.

    1.5
-support characters that can live or die like re1
-knife doesnt take up inventory space. auto equips if unarmed
-rpg like element of equipping armor
-more fleshed out locations. factory is a full area and not just 2-3 interconnecting hallways between sewer and lab. bigger locations
-i think 1.5 can have more zombies on screen over 2? also they are player height
-every enemy has an additional attack/ability they lost in 2. zombies climbing up ledges. dogs/birds have 2 attacks etc.
-wider of arsenal. 1 character gets grenade launcher other character gets grenades
    -slightly less soul

    2
    -a/b scenarios
-cause and effect decisions that carry over
    -higher quality visuals
-more creative and impressive will birkin forms
-more resourceful use of weapons. find parts to upgrade preexisting weapons. 1.5 you just find 2 separate shotguns/handguns etc
-higher quality zombies models. all taller than you for some reason
-got 1 directors cut because 1.5 was cancelled
    -soul

i can keep going like how 1.5 has a free use shutters and 2 has more lore appropriate more fleshy zombies but itll get very technical. other things like unlockables and extra modes 2 has cant be compared as we will never know if 1.5 would have also had them. i probably would have liked 1.5 more but that doesnt mean its better than 2.
