I am convinced this game is a troll or a Brewster's Millions like situation for game devs. This is the king of all walking simulators where you literally just walk and deliver packages like you are playing UPS simulator. The gameplay is all about using different walking techniques to traverse lands. "Bosses" in this game could be small rivers or lakes you need to get around. There is no way Kojima and his friends didn't sit there and talk about how they could sell literal shit to fans and they would defend it thinking it was deeper than it is because Kojima made it and Kojima was like "Ayo hold my beer".
This game was an artistic piece but it was an artistic piece to show morons will buy anything if certain names and memes are attached to it further elaborating on the messages he pushed in Metal Gear Solid 2.

>you literally just walk and deliver packages
"okay".
Look at all that shit that helps you walk around and deliver packages
>b-b-b-b-but it's also a shooter we swear despite the game punishing you if you actually kill someone
Back to your boomer shooter homosexual contrarian, i know you can’t go 5 seconds without your dopamine hit
Isn't it boomer to want a game where you walk......I am sorry hike everywhere and it doesn't test your reflexes or thinking in any way?
Boomers have been the ones pushing the narrative based games with little gameplay.
>Doesn't know what a boomer shooter is
Go back.
Can you quote where I was advocating for boomer shooters?
Can you quote where I said you were? I just pointed out you don't know what a boomer shooter is. The other guy said you were, but of course you didn't quote him.
Again, go back.
>Can you quote where I said you were?
>The other guy said you were, but of course you didn't quote him
> Isn't it boomer to want a game where you walk
No, next question
You are wrong. Boomers are getting older and have kids so this is the game that appeals to them now. Slower narrative based games they can play inbetween taking care of their kids. They want this shit not us.
Wrong, boomers play simple mobile games now which is mostly gameplay with no story
Millennials are the ones that love to play story heavy games
>ayo hold my beer
go back
Ah yes, someone who didn't play the game. Walking simulator is a derogatory term we've coined for games with no gameplay mechanics, where all you do is move your character like a giant cursor to the next prompt until the game ends. Death Stranding is not that, Death Stranding is a hiking sim game, with altogether way too many gameplay mechanics for traversing variable dangerous and wildly different terrains complete with natural obstacles, man made obstacles, and fricking supernatural obstacles in the form of fricking ghosts and time altering rain storms.
>i...i...its not a walking sim you chud
>it's a hiking sim!
Of course it's a low IQ smark.
It is a walking sim in the absolute literal sense, rather than in the meme sense of games like Gone Home or Firewatch
It's not a walking simulator it's a literal sim game about walking
>Death Stranding is a hiking sim game
So.....a walking sim?
I've never seen this explained so well. Walking sims don't have gameplay. They're just some artsy homosexual who's not good enough to write a book or movie. Meanwhile, Death Stranding, and Kojima games in general, tend to be very subversive and thoughtful. I don't particularly like his games, but I will always respect the madlad just because of his auteur-like status.
>walking simulators
God you homosexuals love that phrase don't you? This game is not that. It's more like a "Tactical Strolling Action" sim.
OP is just now realizing that around 18-20 years ago kojimas ego blew up from people constantly blowing hot air up his ass and his inflated ego has never stopped swelling since. Like people are forgetting this is the man who blows through game budget to hang out with celebrities.
Weird this is a game where holding your breath to help you with stealth/ignore poisonous gases is a mechanic, i always enjoyed this mechanic
>morons will buy anything
post the last 10 games you’ve bought (you won’t). i absolutely guarantee they’re all slop
>p...p...please give me ammo to use against you so I can deflect and ignore your argument
I will never answer this. I hold all the power and I will concede none of it. Cope with your "see he won't say it" response I know your shit tactics.
You have no argument. The same “b-but it’s just a waking sim!!!!!” garbage has been spammed for four years now.
You will never get anything from me. I will never tell you things I like so you can just deflect and attack whatever I say I like. This tactic will never be used against me.
Absolute coward who is embarrassed about his shit taste in games or doesn’t play them at all.
You will NEVER get my preferences. I know your autistic tactics, whatever I say I like you will attack it to invalidate my opinion. I will never give you this power autist never.
pot, meet kettle
>n...n...no u
Your primary tactic was a godawful whataboutism and a terribly lazy one at that.
I like death stranding, so when you tell me your favorite game is Anime pantsu moe extravaganza, yeah, I’m going to laugh at you.
cleaning mule camps was fun fight me
>get the sticky gun that MULE's use
>play catch with some hobo that wants your box of shoes
What an actual moronic post holy shit. There's countless people playing a fricking simulation of trucking right now and you think a game where you have to skillfully modify terrain and walk with various equipment and enjoy easier routes as a reward doesn't have a market.
>where you have to skillfully modify terrain and walk
So a walking simulator?
Yes? But it also has driving, combat, platforming, construction, and many other things. It's not a meme "walk and talk" game, it's a game where walking is a fun and well developed mechanic. Do you lack the intelligence to separate the meme definition from the objective assessment?
>it's a walking sim where the object is to walk from point A to B
>no bro it's more complicated than that you get things that making the walking from point A to B better
kek
every game is a walking sim with that logic.
>every game is a UPS delivery simulator
Yea anon sure.
>has to rely on another moronic strawman
No argument, next.
>you have no argument if I don't like it
kek
God reddit needs to come back so you homosexuals leave.
Not an argument
>get the grenade launcher
>use it to either knock out people with sleeping gas or fire oil slicks to make vehicles slip out, and force them to slip and fall
>you can make people slip into a river and fall off the waterfall
The entire game did feel like a joke but I found the gameplay loop to be addictive. I think I honestly like this game more than MGS4, another game where Kojima definitely wanted to just troll people.
This isn’t too far from the impression this game left on me when I played it near release. I only played until the first boss and felt like Kojima was laughing all the way to the bank with my money with every passing second.
I was really not in a good place when this game came out, though, so I have to wonder if I just didn’t give it a fair chance. Although, I also dropped MGS4 despite being a huge fan of the first three games. I just don’t have a lot of patience for games I don’t find to be fun. I think video games should be fun, and I felt like when I was playing Death Stranding that I was being made to feel like a fool for thinking that fun is one of the most important qualities that a game can have.
I also felt talked down to about my own country by someone who didn’t grow up here, honestly.
The first zone (basically a long tutorial) is the worst part of the game. The second one opens up immediately and that's when the game clicked for me. But it's definitely not for everyone.
I’ll give it another go sometime. I was just so bitter about life back then that there was no way I wasn’t gonna feel like the butt of the joke that game was telling.
Sam is bitter as frick. Surprised you didn’t identify with him.
Well lol, I kinda did, and I didn’t like how that felt. I actually dug the hiking gameplay but didn’t feel any pull whatsoever from the story to keep playing. I felt like I was just playing a purposefully empty game alone where I watched a lonely guy be sad and angry. It was not what I needed to spend my free time on when it came out.
I was too, I was like Frick these cuffs, frick you guys, and frick america…. But then everyone I delivered to was so immensely grateful and respectful to me, calling me a legend and treating me like gold, I began to soften up. Don’t skip what people say when you deliver to them, it emotionally rewarding.
>I was too, I was like Frick these cuffs, frick you guys, and frick america…
I honestly didn’t take issue with it like that; quite the opposite, ironically. For some reason I took offense at the game’s portrayal of the US and thought it was blaming for its problems instead of trying to empower me to fix them. I never skip dialogue or cutscenes in games, so I talked to several holograms, but them being holograms that refused to speak to me face to face was just too demoralizing to me at that point in time. Like I said earlier, I just wasn’t in a good place when this game came out.
> holograms that refused to speak to me face to face was just too demoralizing
Well remember, going outside is real fricking scary, for the individual and the group
>don’t go out, what if a bt gets you, you’ll kill is all!
which why they are so impressed with you.
> Like I said earlier, I just wasn’t in a good place when this game came out
I hear you man. Keep on keeping on.
Yeah but it's fun. The deliveries and obstacles are fun.
You are obviously not old enough and lack the life experience to appreciate this game. It is powerful and engaging. I have seen multiple people reduced to sobbing at its touching ending, especially those who have just become fathers themselves. It kojimas best game overall, hands down, and an awesome ride.
This. Fricking this. The mission where I walked to the lake then I walked to the other lake was amazing. Such a memorable mission. I made sure to walk even slower to take it all in.
Nope, frick you, Ganker likes qwop. Cry about your homosexual opinions in your hand
Not a father or anything but this game did make me cry, I love BB's theme ;_;
It's sweet you can either sing it when sitting down or use an instrument from the musician instead
Hell, sam actively gets better at the harmonica once you play it enoug
Neither am I, but I should be, and that can be pretty heart wrenching when playing this game.
>carrying a single package at walk speed along a safe route
Don't worry lazy homosexual, I will link the chiral network and restore America for you, you just keep dragging your feet
Why are you carrying your active skeleton instead of wearing it, Sam? Mama, explain it to him again.
Why is anything you described a bad thing? Is there something inherently wrong with gamifying a mundane task? Paperboy was one of the more popular games on the NES.
>paperboy is a UPS walking sim and exactly 100% the same thing as Death Stranding
Jesus fricking Christ these whataboutisms are getting lazier and lazier as the thread progresses. Quick someone compare DS to Elden Ring next.
This bait isn't even worth a you
>the guy that compared this game to paperboy is accusing others of bait
kek
My primary question was asking how they're a bad thing. Both are games that turn a mundane task into a game. Can you describe what makes them so apple and oranges?
One of them is fun, the other one is relaxing.
That's irrelevant to the question.
That's not what a whataboutism is, anon. You aren't stupid, are you?
NTA, what is the question
What makes a mundane sim game bad? Why would it being a UPS sim make it inherently shit?
I think the strongest point it is the lack of deep and complex gameplay that allows you to combine different features and alternatives with your personal style.
In Death Stranding the physics engine is too simple to turn it into a richer and deeper experience and that's quite noticeable with the vehicles. If we compare them with other titles in the genre, is totally shallow and borderline useless. The lack of being able to experiment is a point against.
And the reason for this, I think, is that Kojima doesn't even consider the core gameplay as the focal point of the experience, for him, the main point it is the movie. Death Stranding is to grind a movie by chapters in the same way that in Grand Theft Auto the delivery missions are to grind money.
In comparison, a simulator give you puzzles that you must solve with the various tools at your disposal and your ability to conjugate them with your personal play styles. That is where the fun lives.
You didn't play it, your opinion is fricking moronic and objectively wrong.
I played it (the standard not the expansion) AMA
You suck and your opinions are trash
I played the full game, it has strong points but I can't justify the lack of content and activity in the world. It's as if Kojima wanted to justify the lack of content in the world with the extension of it.
Didn't ask
Good for you.
Cry more
Truly a unique gaming experience. I'm glad he tries this kind of stuff and prefer it to companies that make the same game time after time. I thought the game was good too. Fact is pretty much all games are quite easy. But as soon as a game has some button mashing gameplay with particle effects you'll basedface your ass off.
Perhaps the underlying problem is that the gameplay is not deep enough to be considered a simulator. It only takes the concept superficially, takes the Kojima brand and sells it. It's not really a simulator. Not in the strict term.
There's an aspect of it where you're incentivized to plan your route beforehand, and to manage your resources (bring what you think you're going to need to help you traverse the route you chose, is there rivers and so on, but don't bring so much that you can't carry it, also make your supplies last, is there a safe house along the route where you can rest and maybe even restock?)
All of this gets ruined with the repetitive BT encounters, though.
Stop carrying ladders and start carrying hemetic grenades and bts will give you zero issue. Carry between 6-8 packages worth and just blast everything in sight. Last run thru on hard I didn’t get grabbed once.
I'm thinking of replaying it but I've heard the Director's cut edition makes the game easier, should I replay the original?
The original is kojima’s vision, play that. I bet his team had to twist his arm pretty hard to convince him to squeeze a bit more profit out of it with add ons.
It has nothing to do with Kojima and everything to do with the fact it's something that actually felt original for once. You quite literally need a higher IQ to enjoy this game, because any one element on its own its pretty lame, but this game is more than the sum of its parts and ends up being atmospheric and contemplative as frick. Something a smoothbrain can never grasp because his mind can't into things holisitically and only deal with what's immediately infront of it.
It’s genius because it took the fetch quest - a soulless filler game mechanic that hack devs invented - and made it into something fun, deep, and even poignant.
Where is the fun in grinding a movie nobody understands to this day?
I get it (I’m not writing the 50 pages it would take to explain it)
I like how the cliff and bb flashbacks feel like a metaphor for kojimas departure from konami.
>I’m not writing the 50 pages it would take to explain it
It is the symptom of a bad story.
>wtf this isn't another gacha or soulslike... is this a joke?
/v/brain rot
