The initial learning curve was a bit rough but once I started to play slow there were only a few areas that gave me any serious trouble. The archers in Anor Londo and the wheel skeletons in the Catacombs come to mind.

        >the wheel skeletons in the Catacombs
I both love and hate those homies like you wouldn't believe

          Anonymous

I ended up missing the Painted World on my first playthrough, the Crestfallen Warrior only mentioned something about curling into a ball in NG+ and it took me forever to figure out how to reach the bird nest. Dumb wheel skeletons sure were a surprise... Especially since the frickers hit even harder than on a fresh save file.

At the time it was released there weren't many difficult games coming out

There were plenty of difficult games, the ones that

Catherine, La Mulana, Isaac, Super Meat Boy were all released the same year and are all significantly harder. I'd even say games like Uncharted on their highest difficulties are harder. Terraria was also released the same year and had harder boss fights

mentioned are just a few. Hell I remember people shitting themselves over Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 despite that game being the most accessible entry.

Dark souls can be easy or hard just by chance with how you decide to approach the game where as something like smb will be the same level of difficulty for everyone
I found smb to be much easier than dark souls

          Anonymous

Unless you play like an absolute moron I have no idea how you'd ever find SMB easier.
SMB demands more precision and higher reflexes in pretty much any scenario that isn't SL1 fist only

            Anonymous

The fact that the punishment for dying in smb is so small it’s practically non existent is reason enough for it to be considered easier

I played it unpatched my first playthrough and it had more soul and more challenge. It was kinda bullshit at moments but I don’t care, I still prefer it
A couple differences I remember from unpatched:
        >silver knight sword had electricity hit effect, idk if it actually did lightning damage
        >lightning seemed even more powerful in unpatched
        >ghosts and skeletons don’t drop souls
        >lower soul gain in general
        >non-respawning enemies aren’t guaranteed to drop their items
        >dark wood grain ring worked if you were under 50% equip load instead of 25%
        >couldn’t purchase twinkling titanite anywhere, among other limitations to what you could buy
        >semi-invisible enemy npcs in darkroot garden would respawn upon reloading and couldn’t be locked onto
        >boss death displays “you defeated” instead of “victory achieved” (even after patch, the x360 version still said you defeated tho)
        >amazingly, the performance in blightown was even worse pre-patch
        >killing ornstein would make him immediately drop the Leo ring, even if smough still lived; I think you could farm Leo rings this way
        >fewer bosses dropped humanity and homeward bones
        >I think there was a difference in how severing boss tails and collecting their items worked, but I don’t remember for sure
        >load screens would sometimes display the wrong item descriptions; e.g. it would show miracle “seek guidance” but display the description for “lightning spear”

          Anonymous

Some boss weapons were also way more powerful, in particular the crystal ring shield. When patched it went from stupidly strong if a bit unwieldy to being pretty bad.

A few other changes that I remember.

        >Message indicating how to remove curse did not exist
        >Undead merchant in aqueduct did not sell purging stones
        >Level up menu did not show souls required for level up
        >Humanity did not increase item drop rates
        >Lower drop rates in general
        >Dusk of Oolacile's skirt had stupidly high stats for some reason
        >You could sell prism stones to Frampt for 100 souls despite being able to buy them for 10
        >Crystal Ring Shield was probably the best weapon but got nerfed hard

I get that if you played similar games before that it could be pretty easy, I for instance played Bloodborne for the first time like 2 months ago, and aside from learning how to use controller in the beginning it was absurdly easy to me because I finished every other From game several times.

It's not a hard game. I was saying this back in 2011 when it came out. It's simply a game with no easy mode and no hand holding 2 hour tutorial so it filtered a lot of plebs at the time. The game was simply a moderately challenging game that demanded a bit of patience and a some observation skills from the player. The whole "OMG IT'S SO HARD" thing was a meme. The marketing team also ran with it and released then "Prepare to Die" edition. israelitetubers made a bunch of death compilations of them dying like morons. It's just a big fricking meme. It influenced Fromsoft to make their games harder and harder and I think this was a mistake. Instead of "tough but fair" encounters the goal seems to be "lol let's crush the players" now with shit like Malenia.

You're the moron. DS1 is the textbook definition of unfair. 90% of the deaths and overall struggle in the game is due to either shitty trap deaths or the game just not explaining shit to you.
Compare to Malenia who can be staggered with hyperarmor occasionally to prevent R1 spam, clear telegraphs, etc. The one thing that could be considered unfair is Waterfowl but that's less unfair and more using your brain to figure out how to dodge/minimize damage from it, unlike in DS1 where you'll die to a trap and then just know to avoid it next time so it's ultimately just a waste of time.

Not to say DS1 is a bad game. It's morons like you who emphasize and put "LE HARD BUT FAIR" on some pinnacle of difficulty design as if it's the only thing you should be considering (and you can't even get the definition right). Sometimes being unfair and shitty is fine depending on what you're aiming for.

Do people really consider DS2 much harder than DS1? For me they are about the same. For me Bloodborne is where the game started getting actually hard. And then DS3 was a bit easier than Bloodborne, but then ER came out and it's the hardest Fromsoft game to date.

  28. 3 months ago

Mainstream AAA games were mostly trending towards casualization when Dark Souls came out. Dark Souls was popular enough to be influential and thus AAA games started becoming more challenging again (or at least gave the option). Also there weren't as many indie games back then. Also Fromsoft's games have become more and more challenging in order to keep veterans engaged.

I really wish the difficulty meme would go the frick away. Every criticism about these games seem to be based around this in some way when it was never what made the games appealing in the first place.

It just feels good to play a game that lets you explore and use some critical thinking to overcome challenges and uncover a story without holding your hand like you're in a theme park utterly unable to use your brain without the games help. Fromsoft manages to do this while creating interesting worlds that you want to explore and decent boss fights that give you a sense of scale and accomplishment after you beat it.
