Is CV3 the only case where the American version is harder? Usually they made them easier

Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania 1... They usually made the American versions harder.

              >Castlevania 1
No Castlevania's the same between the original Famicom disk version and the original NES cartridge version.
The Famicom cartridge version, which came out in like 1994 or something, just has an easy mode.

I could have sworn the famicon version had saves. Must be going senile with age.

The American version of Dragon's Lair(NES) is way harder than the European one.
            Also Battletoads.

Make the game harder so people have to rent it multiple times from rental stores. Yep, that's Konami all right
They also made some other changes to make the game harder , but I have to give it to them for fixing the cheese in this boss room

I guess there's also the fact that he has free mobility in the air, which is pretty useful if you are a terrible player like me and misjudge your jumps constantly.

Almost sounds like something I'd expect from old NES era translations.

How far do 'rental versions' go?
Did Japs not 'beat the game' worse than I did?

In CV3 specifically damage is based on stage number instead of enemy type which is pretty bullshit. Some check points removed the only one I really remember is the one right before Dracula. Might be a few spots with added Medusa/Bats/Gargoyles like the room before Dracula. Bunch of other random stuff too that probably matters a lot less. Already mentioned Grant change.

Grant 's controlled jumps are really nice thoough
