I can slide under here easily with the Hori Pokken controller, but can't do it with an NES Classic controller through a USB adapter.

I can slide under here easily with the HORI Pokken controller, but can't do it with an NES Classic controller through a USB adapter. Are you supposed to be able to or not?

I use to do it all the time with a real NES, using an actual NES gamepad.

I could do it on NES, though.

I haven't done it in a while so I just booted up the game using mesen and a logitech f310 controller. I was able to easily slide under there. Skill issue.

no moron I just said I can do it with my other controller. now I'm wondering what's wrong with this NES Classic one or the adapter I paid like $30 for

If the game lets you do it with ANY controller, then I don't think it's possible that you aren't supposed to be able to do it. There are two possibilities:
    a) One controller is letting you play pretty much normally while the other is getting in your way somehow.
    b) One controller is helping you cheat in this strange little way while the other one isn't.

How would option b even work?? I don't think the HORI controller has a special SMB1 cheating chip in it or anything; it's surely just on/off switches like any NES controller. I think it's gotta be option a somehow. (I wouldn't know exactly how though.)

SMB1 technically allows inputs that are impossible on a regular NES controller such as left+right or up+down simultaneously. Normally this wasn't an issue since those inputs can't be done on controllers back then due to mechanical design. But now you can get a controller that would allow such inputs.

Actually on an original Famicom you can. It has a port in the front which you can use for external controllers, if the game isn't 3 player compatible by default the controller will act as a second player 1 controller, thus allowing to use 2 controllers at once.

Yeah there's that. But like what are the odds that some random controller would be sending signals like that, and that they would somehow help in one spot in SMB while not ruining other games (or the rest of that one)?
