The emulation on it kinda sucks, it isn't a powerful console. PS1 has all the mainstream RPGs but PSP and Vita have some niche gems.

If you’re an RPG guy, you’re probably going to want to stick to PS1 RPGs via Adrenaline. SNES and GBA are extremely underwhelming on the Vita, and obscure/overlooked titles tend to not emulate well. Snes9x 2005 and gpSP are its best performing cores and both are ancient and rampant with incompatibilities.

      >I'm a big RPG guy
I’ve been playing Tales of Eternia. The PSP version, though. Better audio quality and battles run at 60fps.

GBA games look really good on the Vita screen, it's such a shame that the performance is ass.

Why are you idiots lying? Tell me you never owned a Vita without telling me you never owned a Vita. GBA games run near perfect on the Vita. With the gpsp core via retroarch, shit runs great. I can even underclock the CPU to 222mhz and it still runs full speed with the normal 2x filter. Same goes for SNES for the most part, but for games that use the super FX chip, there's lag here and there, but I'd say a good 95% of the library plays full speed with no problems.

Don't undermine the Vita's emulation. The Vita is a excellent retro emulation machine. Certainly better than those generic chink shit handhelds.

nah it's shit, and you only think it's great because you dont own one if those generic handhelds you talk shit on.

ps1 emulation is frickin terrible without l2/r2. the analog sticks and back touchpad are terrible replacements, and trigger grips dont feel good at all (and arent even made anymore).
snes emulation is unacceptable, even if it mostly works. almost anything will perform better than the vita. theres no reason you shouldnt be able to get near flawless snes emulation in current year.
the one thing i will give you is that gba emulation is pretty good. people memed about it being shit because dynarec was broken for a long time, but as soon as that was fixed, emulation worked great the vita became one of my favorite gba systems. still not better than the recent 3:2 rk3326 devices.

i dont think a vita is a bad purchase, but if you are getting it purely for retro emulation, there are some possibly better options. you can get a new rg351mp for around the same price as a vita, and have a much better experience with snes and ps1, and a slightly worse experience with gba (due to the screen). if you just want gba, the rg351p would be even less.

          >nah it's shit
wrong and wrong. those generic handhelds fricking suck and you're an idiot if you buy them.

ps1 emulation is good as it's not even emulation, it's running natively through adrenaline, and you can just use a grip for l2/r2 and them being not made anymore isn't a valid complaint, you can just grab one for either the 1000 or 2000

          >snes emulation is unacceptable, even if it mostly works
Like I said, 95% of the library runs full speed. I've been chipping away on my snes backlog on my vita, and so many games I've tried run at full speed. It gets the job done.

          >3:2 rk3326 devices
these things look ugly and bland as frick. no thank you

          >but if you are getting it purely for retro emulation,
The vita also has the benefit of its own library. Vita emulation is still at its infancy so there's alot of meaning to owning an actual vita.

I would only consider getting a chinkshit handheld for Saturn, N64, and sixth gen console emulation. Everything else, the Vita gets it done fairly well.

yeah, i must be an idiot for preferring these devices i own more than the vita which i also own.
im aware the ps1 shit is native, but trigger grips or right stick are shit solutions and you dont get emulation features. good trigger grips are going to be like $50 minimum on top of the ~$150 you would spend looking for a used vita. the grips kinda ruin the portability of the device and you cant use cases/sleeves anymore. ps1 is just a better experience on most of these other chinese devices.

im not against the vita as an retro handheld, but i wouldnt reccomend it to someone who doesnt already have one (as a retro handheld; i think the vita is overall a good buy because of psp games and indies, but those are not retro). there are now chinese handhelds that have better ux than the vita.

tl;dr i think the vita is perfectly fine if you already have one, but going out and buying one for /vr/ games exclusively might not be the best option

anyways, i think i should answer op

            >pokemon romhacks
they go great with handheld emulation. if you want to return to something familiar, try altered emerald or roaming red. if you want something completely new, try gaia or prism.

Not quite an RPG, but definitely grab Muramasa Rebirth and all of its DLC. The DLC is exclusive to the vita and it’s one of the best games on there.

The whole Ys series is on there. Ores Gula is an exclusive and is pretty good. Ar Nosurge Plus. Stranger Over Sword City.

Also, make sure you get Adrenaline for ps1-psp games, PKGj for DLC, and RetroArch for almost everything else. It’s a great little console once hacked. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

They have the biggest case of sour grapes I’ve ever seen. I’ve been playing my backlog on my vita for years and adore the thing. It’s perfect for damn near everything that isn’t the sixth gen and beyond.

Oh! And Gundam Breaker 3 Break Edition. It’s cuhrayzee virtual toy battles and has a ton of customization. It also has a fun little VN story to go with it. PS4 version is obviously better, but for a free Vita game it’s a nice one to have on there and play on the go. I mostly only play /vr/, but every now and again I’ll play Breaker 3.

He thinks fullspeed = perfect. I guarantee you he doesn’t play most games to completion, and just replays the same dozen games he’s been playing since childhood. ALttP resets after rescuing Zelda due to gpSP setting off the game’s anti-piracy. The Legacy of Goku games also don’t work for the same reason. Mode 7-esque sections in games run insanely fast, like the overworld in FF6 or Swanky’s Dash in DKC3. GBA is the drizzling shits on Vita. And I say that as someone who loves their Vita, but uses a New 3DS for SNES and GBA.

I played through legacy of goku 3 recently, and while gpsp via retroarch had some issues here and there bugging out and clearing the save, it was completeable. The main menu not running audio at full speed sucked but wasn't a deal breaker.
GBA on vita sucks generally though. I can't understand people who say any emulator or platform is satisfactory if the audio is glitching out or the game isn't running full speed. Full cope for not having the actual system.

I have a PSTV, which has better emulation capabilities since it can be modded to tolerate higher overclocking, and I have to attest to the emulation capability not being too great. The obvious 8 and 16 bit consoles run fine, but everything else is a mixed bag in terms of performance, especially so given the wonky resolution making it difficult to fill the screen with integer scaling of standard 240p/244p resolutions.
That said it's become my preferred method of emulating PS1 games, and the semi-native PSP playback also makes it highly desirable for those games as well.
I haven't even touched any Vita games on it since I only use my PSTV for PS1 and PSP games, and I've owned the thing for a year or so.

        >I have a PSTV, which has better emulation capabilities since it can be modded to tolerate higher overclocking,
Both units support the same frequencies. The only difference is that there's no reason to underclock the PSTV, since it won't affect battery life.
        >The obvious 8 and 16 bit consoles run fine, but everything else is a mixed bag in terms of performance
SNES isn't great depending on the game.
        >especially so given the wonky resolution making it difficult to fill the screen with integer scaling of standard 240p/244p resolutions.
It's an excellent resolution for GBA, which is why I was disappointed it didn't run well. By the way, Sharpscale is essential if you want good video scaling.
        >That said it's become my preferred method of emulating PS1 games, and the semi-native PSP playback also makes it highly desirable for those games as well.
        >I haven't even touched any Vita games on it since I only use my PSTV for PS1 and PSP games, and I've owned the thing for a year or so.
I don't use my PSTV very much, but I'm torn between my PSP and Vita for portable PSP and PS1 games. On the one hand the Vita controls are incredible, on the other it suffers input lag and chunky 2x scaling.

Yeah, it’s better to watch a couple videos on hacking whatever particular hardware you are before actually attempting it. You should feel completely comfortable with the process before jumping in.

just deleted the data. It's like, half done, but I forget what step I was at. I accidentally selected formatting the Vita memory card rather than the micro SD card. I remember the root directory numbers were reversed or something.

Similar story for me. I bought my vita back in 2017 and it was gathering dust until last month when I hacked it.

Now I use the thing on a daily basis. If sony wasn't made by a bunch of morons, a PS Vita 2 could have been a real contender for the Switch. Just the fact that the Vita is much more comfortable to play on and has a better software and hardware (no fricking drift) always makes it at least on par with the switch. Too bad it didn't have enough support from devs.
