For context I had no experience with Doom aside from playing a little bit of Knee-Deep in the Dead. I played it before streamers/YouTubers got a hold of it, right as it was going viral, because my partner told me to and I had no idea what it was.
The geometry etc. was fairly impressive and it managed to scare me a few times (especially that moment in the basement when the new monsters show up) but I thought the actual content was shit, creepypasta-tier "lore" documents aside. I had never touched any of that trashy liminal space zoomer crap but I could tell it was extensively ripping that off with half the environments, it just made me roll my eyes more than anything. Not to mention the groan-inducing hyperrealistic blood in the airport bathroom etc. practically begging you to be unsettled by it. I couldn't believe my eyes when I was reading people in the original thread (since that was about the extent of discussion at the time) saying the game made them cry, it was some of the most hamfisted corny internet horror shit imaginable. The only compliment I can give the game in the realm of narrative is that it uses the level design to drive home the theme of regret, which is cool. But that's where the praise ends.
Anyone else disappointed by this thing? It convinced me to stay away from Doom wads, it was proof that the Doom community playes are incredibly aesthetically basic and impressed with literally anything that goes for emotions other than "shoot demon", so I figured there was no reason to bother with their output.

If he only played the shareware demo then he would be absolutely annihilated by Plutonia and Scythe, they're classics but they're designed with the expectation that you've got a good understanding of Doom 2 and that you're looking for a greater challenge.
Almost done playing it for the first time, and this has been my experience. The levels in the other two episodes are just too big.

i thought it was pretty cool, mostly on the technical side, but i can appreciate the atmosphere, i don't really care if it's zoomer crap i think it's cool.
what i found strange was that it wasn't 'about' the two gay guys but the real life creator's divorce, which felt lamer tbh. although it's based on a real house so that's something i guess
