Played it for the first time recently, seems accurate. Gameplay is a massive slog, the level design ranges from decent to awful, but always repetitive. Story is fun but there's no attempt at all to integrate or tell it through the gameplay, which slowly chipped away my interest. I did like the visuals, though. I'd probably be happy to play it around the time it released as a decent game but I'm surprised the praise is as high as it is.
I did think it was amazing on my first real attempt through it in my teenage years. I finally finished it at 27 and I found Chapter 4 to be underwhelming. I was kinda glad it was done by that point. It's the only reason why I haven't bothered with a second replay
It's a statistical micromanagement simulator. The absolute worst kind of RPG because it gives you nothing to work with. You literally have to grind to unlock even the most basic shit like the ability to use a healing item.

It's OK, story is as predictable as you can get, combat is alright but gets incredibly annoying during late game where you deploy like 20 fricking units and the enemy does the same, I just ended up disabling all animations and speeding up shit as much as possible and I still could easily tab out for 3+ minutes during every single turn end.

It's part 2 of a 3 part battle that lets you save in between. If you've been fricking around with your Ramza's jobs or weren't expecting it he just rapes you and most people don't make backup saves. And then the next battle you can just auto lose because of the moronic AI
This is the game that taught me the importance of keeping multiple saves. My friend lost a ton of work grinding when he accidentally went to load game instead of save. I got bricked in one of the multiple part battles where you fight Wiegraf and he turns into Velius. What a game, one of my all time favorites.
level up stats were linked to what class you were when you leveled, which means idiots could royally frick up a character for example a bunch of levels in whitemage but your end goal was a melee class.
essentially you had to look up guides which angers minmaxers who fricked their shit up.

the classes that gave the most optimal stats were classes you didnt really want to use.
both of these are extremely emulatable, wotl specfiically has tons of hacks and patches that fix that particular version (i really recommend looking up the tweaked mod)

People play classic games and ask what the big deal is, utterly unaware of how long it's taken for average games to catch up.
What makes Tactics fun is the variety of ways you can play and customize the game. Sure you can simply play the game normally, grind up super powerful classes etc, but it isnt the only way you can play, from solo challenges, using monsters, minimum battles, only base classes, no/shit equipment etc, there are plenty of unique and fun things you can do, and playing the game normally is fun too just messing with class synergies and making powerful units. If this kind of autism is not for you, then that is perfectly understandable. Baseline, the game has some decently challenging maps here and there, but it is relatively easy because of the amount of freedom you are given. There are fun hidden mechanics that dont really have too much bearing through normal play, but you can engage in them if you really wanna customize things or take advantage of them in one of the various potential self imposed challenges you put on yourself. This doesnt include the various hacks or mods. Of course, the story is solid too. Not amazing, but decent.
Personally, for this reason and for my general love of the genre it is my game of all time even in spite of its flaws and generally shit camera. I play and enjoy plenty of TBS games including Tactics Ogre, Advance Wars, Every Fire Emblem game Fates: Revelation is the worst TBS I have EVER played Langrisser, etc, and none quite capture the same feeling FFT has. Looking forward to Metal Slug Tactics if they ever fricking announce a release date for it
Rev legitimately had potential. Im not a bug fan of Fates but I can recognize that a lot of the mechanics work well together, and that there are fun and interesting skills and units to play with. The problem I have is that the map design is utterly abysmal, and detracts from the game's strengths. It isnt even that they are flat and boring like awakening, it is that they are ACTIVELY obnoxious and tedious, thus encouraging you only to really play in the ways that easily circumvents the dumb gimmicks.

I dont get why people fail to understand this. Evil corrupts and subverts what is pure. In a lot of these games, the evil of men or otherworldly demons subverts the purity of what is religion. Evil is supposed to be deceptive and subversive, and what is more wicked than subverting the purity of scripture? A lot of the party members that stay on the path, and depend on the boons of god, still typically use these abilities to help purge that of which is evil

It's part 2 of a 3 part battle that lets you save in between. If you've been fricking around with your Ramza's jobs or weren't expecting it he just rapes you and most people don't make backup saves. And then the next battle you can just auto lose because of the moronic AI
This is the game that taught me the importance of keeping multiple saves. My friend lost a ton of work grinding when he accidentally went to load game instead of save. I got bricked in one of the multiple part battles where you fight Wiegraf and he turns into Velius. What a game, one of my all time favorites.

level up stats were linked to what class you were when you leveled, which means idiots could royally frick up a character for example a bunch of levels in whitemage but your end goal was a melee class.
essentially you had to look up guides which angers minmaxers who fricked their shit up.

both of these are extremely emulatable, wotl specfiically has tons of hacks and patches that fix that particular version (i really recommend looking up the tweaked mod)

I still have no idea how to get past the third or fourth mission without losing anyone. Seriously, having to start all over with a character is brutal if you do have someone die. The one with all the mages and the elevated terrain when you're in the town is torture. How the frick does this work? There's gotta be a way. I've tried approaching the enemy, I've tried letting them come to me, I've tried approaching enemies in pairs. I'm stumped.

What makes Tactics fun is the variety of ways you can play and customize the game. Sure you can simply play the game normally, grind up super powerful classes etc, but it isnt the only way you can play, from solo challenges, using monsters, minimum battles, only base classes, no/shit equipment etc, there are plenty of unique and fun things you can do, and playing the game normally is fun too just messing with class synergies and making powerful units. If this kind of autism is not for you, then that is perfectly understandable. Baseline, the game has some decently challenging maps here and there, but it is relatively easy because of the amount of freedom you are given. There are fun hidden mechanics that dont really have too much bearing through normal play, but you can engage in them if you really wanna customize things or take advantage of them in one of the various potential self imposed challenges you put on yourself. This doesnt include the various hacks or mods. Of course, the story is solid too. Not amazing, but decent.
Personally, for this reason and for my general love of the genre it is my game of all time even in spite of its flaws and generally shit camera. I play and enjoy plenty of TBS games including Tactics Ogre, Advance Wars, Every Fire Emblem game Fates: Revelation is the worst TBS I have EVER played Langrisser, etc, and none quite capture the same feeling FFT has. Looking forward to Metal Slug Tactics if they ever fricking announce a release date for it

Rev legitimately had potential. Im not a bug fan of Fates but I can recognize that a lot of the mechanics work well together, and that there are fun and interesting skills and units to play with. The problem I have is that the map design is utterly abysmal, and detracts from the game's strengths. It isnt even that they are flat and boring like awakening, it is that they are ACTIVELY obnoxious and tedious, thus encouraging you only to really play in the ways that easily circumvents the dumb gimmicks.
