there aren’t that many games that are perfect and deliver such thorough entertainment for many hours, and exceed all expectations. when one comes along, it’s celebrated for decades

      Anonymous

It's not even close to perfect. The controls are garbage and RE4 is the only shooter in existence which controls worse with mouse and keyboard than a controller. Controlling Leon is like moving through cold molasses, which severely affects the overall enjoyment of the game. This is the primary reason why the remake is so much better than the original.

They are extremely precise and are well suited for the challenges the game throws at you. Just because they are unconventional compared to today doesn't mean they're bad.

          Anonymous

Yeah pretty much. Leon's tank controls might seem unintuitive if you're new but the game is 100% designed around them on every level and it's extremely satisfying to play after the most brief amount of time getting used to it.

I love tank controls, I just don't think they are suitable for when I need to aim and control a camera.

How so? They're perfect for a game series that was is and always has been designed around not being able to run and shoot at the same time.

They make an action game feel like shit, and also I don't care about old design philosophy when the gameplay was changed so radically. Tank controls make RE4 original a subpar action game, which is why the remake, 5, and 6 will always be better action games than the original 4.

because on 5 you can turn around with mouse, so you only hold w.
in 4 you can do this with the hd mod but it's weirdly implemented. you will have to turn with w+a/d and it sucks dick.

Yeah it's the last RE game to have them and is also the conclusion to the entire series story-wise. I find it pretty neat. They should've stopped making em after 5

Yeah, but it's worse when a game was designed around the limitation of controllers. MP added lock on, and re4 added the laser/slow mobs, both rendered redundant or even detrimental with mouselook. It may as well be god mode. Which is fun every now and again. Like a Chicago Typewriter run

tank controls aren't the problem as much as your vision being locked to tank controls outside of a side glance you can do. works great for normal gameplay where you are in the role of a walking turret against a horde, but when you are in a boss fight and something is directly chasing you with attack patterns I think it breaks down a bit, looking at an enemy to engage with it and being mobile to dodge attacks become oil and water.

Yes, you are not just a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian.
Yes, Resident Evil 4 was meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard, not a controller.
Yes, tank controls are garbage; every third person game should have the controls of GTA/RedDeadRedemption or Dark Souls - nothing else is acceptable.
Yes, the remake is much better than the original.

It's mostly the level / scenario design.
I didn't get the hype when I first played it either - thought it was a 7/10 (like Ocarina of Time).
It's only after playing way more games that you realise how bad its competition was.
There are more mechanically interesting games you could be playing - but RE4 has them beat in level / scenario design.

      >after playing way more games that you realise how bad its competition was.
This is all it takes to be a classic with video games. They're so challenging to make that the 'least bad' ones get remembered as long as they have some style and a tiny bit of substance. You're right the level design is the key appeal here but also the campy, simple narrative, perfect pacing. And actually cool and sleak, yet grotesque aesthetic. The game delivers enough tension throughout to feel like a great thriller game and you've got inventory management, upgrades, secrets to find and a few puzzles that are just hard enough to make you think for a couple minutes. It's a well balanced game, a crowd pleaser

I've been thinking a lot about how the base mechanics of a game are like the raw ingredients in a recipe and the execution/cultural background of the devs is like the seasoning. I like seeking out games with varying levels of mechanical polish, as to build a metaphorical ramp from a undifferentiated software, to a masterpiece game.
Idk where I'm going with this. We tend to love Japanese games for their nice art and whimsical narratives but the truth is they were so influential because of their early technical mastery of game mechanics. Imo they completely mogged the west, from the 70s into the 90s then lost their advantage

They removed it because the patch was also for some fixes which didn't work. The DRM is still there to my knowledge. Other Capcom games have gotten Engima DRM, lately including Monster Hunter Rise. Apparently RE5 has had it since it got that GFWL patch last year.

            Anonymous

RE5 patch also added choice between modern FOV and Original.
I don't know whether it changed lightning though.
I believe PS4/Xbox One/Switch version had tone down some lightning effects. Which looks worse than original PC port.
I think they'll add it to all their supported games. RE4 2005 included.
Street fighter 4 wouldn't get updated. SSFIV? maybe

re4 is tougher with fast-moving las plagas ambushing you and the chainsaws taking you instantly, and it’s almost 3 times the length of classic re and gets progressively more difficult. especially the original gamecube release which had less upgrades and no armor.

in comparison to slow zombies, re4 has much greater difficulty throughout. you have to be good at action games and face continually shifting hoardes of enemies. classic re is a lot easier to get a handle on and you usually face only a few enemies at a time. not saying it’s easy but in comparison to 4, just look at the second krauser boss fight- there’s nothing in classic re that is that challenging. friends of mine who were casual gave up on the game, often before even getting there, because they didn’t save ammo and had no clue how to get through certain areas. classic is much slower and relaxec fighting

The only people I've ever seen say this are ones that played enough of the old ones to get good at that control scheme to a stupid degree and that now can't remember what a b***h the first 3 are on your first playthrough. Of course the enemies are fewer and not technically as capable because your character isn't nearly as capable due to the controls. Zombies off screen that you can shoot and that you know how many bullets to kill are easy but before you actually have the game memorized off screen zombies are a complete nightmare and could cause you to lose all the ammo you had. It's like trying to say that cod is harder than re2 because it has more enemies and they can shoot back.

classic resident evil tends to more stressful in the sense of long term decision making, having to plan out routes and your inventory. In re4 as long as you're happy with your weapon loadout, you are more comfortable always knowing you are on the right track within the game, any setback being a momentary failure in a combat arena.

its hard (fun hard not tedious hard) on professional mode but even then i still find the original 3 games to be tougher especially the first game, those damn hunters are hard to avoid and hard to kill. as much as i like the design of the lickers, they are piss easy in comparasion since you can just walk away from them and they never notice you

The more I browse this board, the more I learn that most gamers here are just fricking terrible at games. Classic RE has ALWAYS been easy as piss, ESPECIALLY RE2. RE3 is the only game that comes close to RE4 difficulty, and that's only if you try to fight Nemesis. The old games pretty much played themselves because of how good the auto aim was and how powerful shit like the shotgun was. The only difficult portion of the games were figuring out where to go, and after RE1, they made it easier to navigate. RE2 is super linear, and RE3 straight up tells you where to go on the map.
RE4 difficulty stems from having more aggressive enemies while still having the same controls of the classics. Positioning is far more important here, not to mention that in RE4, you have to fight more enemies with different roles all at once. That's what makes RE4 combat so fun compared to the others. You are no longer fighting the laziest enemy type in gaming.

remember that """people""" on this board actually get filtered by the water room, a large open space where you can snipe 80% of the enemies before they can even reach you. these are the people you share a board with.

And yet I prefer the zombie enemies over spanish speaking villagers whom attacks you with enemies. The fun was always about killing zombies, not angry villagers.

          >The fun was always about killing zombies,
The fun of classic RE was the puzzle solving. The actual combat has always been terrible, outside of RE3.

          >Classic RE has ALWAYS been easy as piss
I find the original US version of RE1 and RE0 to be fricking difficult

          >I find the original US version of RE1 and RE0 to be fricking difficul
That's because Capcom HATED the idea of people renting the game, so they made the OG US release stupid hard. Every port afterward has the original difficulty, I think at least. For RE0, I found more annoying than hard. It's just super tedious and obnoxious.

What are you talking about, combat was great in RE2DS' Extreme Battle LV3. It's just that devs back then were concerned that kids (the majority of their audience) couldn't tackle on more deadly threats and toned down combat in the main playthrough but you cansee it shine in optional minigames they designed or additional difficulties implemented in other ports (Hard/Nightmare).

    The tank controls sucked.
    >inb4 zoomer
I played and finished the game when it came out. My friend made me get it insiting it was the greatest game of all time. Controls are shit. By the PS2 era there is no excues for this unlike the ps1 datys. Escorting and protecting the whiney brat was not fun. Difficulty becomes a joke after you leave the village. And don't forget it has QTEs.
Its not a bad game. Since I finished it it means its OK but 10/10 masterpiece greatest of all time?

Zoomer, your arguments don't make any sense.
This is the first game with modern TPS control scheme. By PS2 era TPS still had weird controls. Name me one other game from that generation.
RE4 has hardly any true escorting. You can look it up Ashley is not available for the most of the game.
      QTEs are fun in RE4.
Castle and still retains difficulty with added enemy types. People weren't used to TPS controls as it was the first game, so it was harder than today for pretty much everyone.

Yes RE4 has great implementation on QTEs. You can replay the game to find out.

wow, such fun, what a blast

homie there’s like a total of 10-15 qte events in the 15-20 hour game. it’s just the occasional chance for you to get hit with a surprise where you have to be on your toes.

Button mashing to run away from a boulder is annoying. I don't know what kind of person you have to be to find that crap exciting but anyway I don't see why RE4 gets such a gold star for it when lots of other games have the same thing.

            Anonymous

re4 doesn’t get a gold star for a dumb qte, and it’s not exciting. it’s one tiny element in the game, and it doesn’t diminish the rest which is brilliant. you’re struggling with moronation and arguing nonsensical strawman horseshit, kid

ashley is such a non issue since she stays close to you and unless you suck a fat dick, zombies shouldnt be getting that close to you, not to mention you can kick them

          She really isn't.
Two points come to mind for me. Water room. That's also my favorite part in the game. Partially because of that.
I also told her to wait early in castle and she got kidnapped. Which again was fun, as I wasn't expecting that.
Game doesn't bother you with her otherwise.

Worst game in the RE franchise. It's not even a traditional RE game. It's as if the devs were making a different game and decided to add only two characters from RE in order to make this game sale.

nta, and the parry is neat, but the rng of the stagger -> melee follow-up of the remake is far worse. Re4 gets fun because the combat works like a well oiled machine. I shoot head/knee, I get melee prompt, I knock down the whole mob with my mighty boot. I am in complete control of the battlefield. In RE4make I consistently get headshots and the enemy doesn't even register it. They just keep walking. That alone is why I prefer og

              Anonymous

so you prefer the original because it's easy mode stagger on headshot, nice

                Anonymous

Yes yes, and you prefer difficulty from dice rolls rather then intelligent design. Lets add some critical parry fails too eh? In all seriousness, when thing go sideways in og vs RE, it's nice to know if it was a mistake & my fault, and not just blind luck. I don't usually respect rng as a game mechanic.

                Anonymous

Since the remake has a good control scheme, guaranteed stunlock on headshots, which you can hit every time, means you have guaranteed stunlock for every single shot you take. I don't want to defend RNG, but the game would be too easy at this point, and it's already very easy to begin with, even on professional.

                Anonymous

It's not a dice roll, enemies will stagger after a certain damage to a critical spot, you just have to account for that by properly positioning yourself and making you can land enough bullets safely before the enemy closes the distance between you and him. And there's always a last resort measure (either the knife parry or a shotgun blast) if that fails.

It works exactly like the original games, where zombies would stagger after a certain amount of damage - RNG would do its thing - sometimes you got lucky and put them on the ground after the 4th bullet, sometimes they could sponge half a clip.
