Never played these and decided to give it a shot. Beyond all the “controversy”, one thing I constantly see people saying about these entries is that it has a good story. I genuinely do not see it. Most of the characters just awkwardly start spouting about truth and ideals and it doesn’t feel natural. I understand where they were going with N but I just don’t care for him even after his backstory is revealed at the castle.
It was an attempt at a more JRPG like story.
Which is inherently shit.
The problem is that for all it tried, it was worse than the worst bottom of the barrel jrpg.

But more than that its also the fact the gym leaders are way more developed than any entry prior to that(and most after other than SM and maybe SV).

That is exactly the problem. People who say Gen 5's story is good are only comparing it to other Pokemon games as if it's a high bar at all. For regular RPG standards, it's ok at best

BW is worse than what came before, just because it's more complex doesn't mean its better. The simple Saturday morning kind of plots from the first few gend worked *because* they were simple and didn't pretend to be anything more than they were. It just existed to give you some bad guys to beat up and give your adventure some structure. BW's story is the same kind of schlock but it constantly beats you over the head with it and tries too hard to be serious. That's so much worse. The solution to a series with poor writing isn't to give you even *more* writing. You're mistaking quantity for quality, that's the problem with BW fans who act like it's so superior to previous gens.

HGSS and BW came out a year apart, BW was in development way before HGSS had any feedback you dumbfrick
Black/White was a more character driven Pokemon game, with naive teenagers as the main characters. It was about them leaving home and finding themselves and whatever. And about N, who never left home and didn’t understand the world. This all probably resonated with the fans who played in 2010, and may have been the same age. Or people who never liked the Pokemon game stories being so direct (Giovanni wants money).
I agree the script feels unnatural at times, but I don’t know how much is translation error. “Truth” vs “Ideals” is really vague and not even opposites.
When people say that, it's usually in the context of Pokemon alone. Like, in terms of Pokemon it's a "good story", but if you include any other media it's a complete shitfest just like any of the other games
This. The Gen 5 games are the most acceptable Pokemon games but are still Pokemon nonetheless.

It's pretty much the best story you could hope for from a Pokemon game. It's not perfect by any means, you could obviously touch it up in some places, but I don't think there are any better ideas for a story left. Pokemon's strict formula and G-rated utopia world really limits what you can do. The fact that neither Gamefreak nor fans have managed to surpass it in 10 years is strong evidence in favor of this.
Gen 1, 7, and 9 all easily have better stories than BW.
BW has one good character and that’s it. The entire rest of the story is the same fricking shitty slop as Gen 3-6.
