I thought so too at first, but you have to remember to put points into some sort of ranged weapon. It also helps to think of it less as a FPS with RPG elements and more like a RPG that happens to be in first person.
>Cybernetically enhanced government agent grown in a lab funded by God knows how many cash dollars' worth of money from investors and taxes comes fresh out of training not knowing how to aim a gun unless you hold completely still for 6 seconds to hit something accurately
I agree, actually. Of all the games that get hit with the FPS/RPG label or even just first-person RPGs, Deus Ex handles it the worse. Sadly, most other games don't have a tenth of the rest of the game.
It’s realistic. Secret government projects are always managed very poorly. The more expensive, the worse it gets. That’s the main reason they’re so secret.
Black projects that the general population doesn't know about have historically been successful, from the F-117 to the CIA buying titanium from the USSR under fake companies to build the SR-71, not to mention the stealth UH-60 Blackhawk and B-2 Spirit, all of which were so secret in their heyday that people legit thought they were seeing UFOs. There are far more projects that you would never know about if not for document disclosures from WikiLeaks and Freedom of Information Act.

No, people were ACTUALLY seeing UFO's. None of what you listed can move 1,000 miles per hour and make immediate 90 degree angle turns.
i think it's supposed to be like that because you're not supposed to be killing people in the first mission. Then manderley gives you money after that which you can use to upgrade yourself and the armoury guy gives you stuff too.
Stop getting into combat. Combat is your punishment for failing at stealth, nearly every mission is infiltration. Combat's the only thing this stealth game is bad at, because it's a stealth game.
You can play the game as a commando. Sneaking to places and then shooting guys in the head with your silenced pistol, or eviscerating them with your dragon sword.
Shooting mechanics in DE make little to none narrative sense, but make essential game play sense
Keep in mind that at that time if a game had fps view and guns it was considered a run and gun game, which DE is not, and that is a perfect way of making the player try out different approaches in the very first level
All the games that devs made are boredom simulators that just sniff their own farts
Confession: I played it back in 2000 but lost interest after the prologue with the statue of liberty. Still haven't played any more of it.
I liked what little I saw of the story. but the presentation, characters, environments, gameplay and everything else just stopped me from getting into it.

If you don't like Deus Ex you probably played it too late. It has a lot of unbalanced mechanics and issues which weren't noticeable at the time, and a lot of the innovations and storytelling aren't as unique as there were back then. Still my second favourite game of all time after Thief Metal Age.
I like it but as this guy said it didnt age well. The optics were mediocre when it came out and they are terrible now. So zoomers and such have a hard time with it. Its like the best steak of all time, covered with shit. You know theres greatness to enjoy, but you dont want to consume the shit that comes with it
i thought it was boring the first time I played it, I only just got up to the 2nd or 3rd stage though. But a few years later I played it again and got further and it was awesome. Now it's my favourite game. The first stage is pretty slow and it's not really clear what's going on but it makes more sense later and picks up a lot
I actually like the first level. It's big and explorable with many ways to progress, and since you've just started and only have like 2 things you're good at, the build playstyle differences are at their highest.
There's nothing in any other game that's as satisfying as tossing an object/firing a dart to position guards in a line (because they turn to look at it) and then hitting each of them in turn with sweetspotted baton takedowns
>How do you know?
How do you know they frick up more than they don't? Do you know anything about the 10+ DoD spy sattelites that were successfully carried to space by the space shuttle and whose documents are still classified? Project Horizon? The US Bioweapons program that remained secret for 40 years? It took a guy from the CIA to literally go rogue and show how much you don't know. It's not a videogame that'll tell you that.

It's always been like this with new players.
Not soon after Deus Ex RPGs started letting you specialize in everything all at once and the concept of having to allocate your skill points with some degree of sense became foreign.
Deus Ex is one of those games like Metal Gear where everything about it is cool except the gameplay which just sucks ass and everyone pretends to like it to be le oldgay memelord.
I'd never heard anyone criticise the gameplay in Deus Ex until the last few years. Presumably due to zoomers playing it for the first time after seeing it on YouTube and angry it's not like CoD or whatever.

Yes. In fairness the supposed premise is that you can choose whatever play style you like, including full frontal assault. In reality if you play it like that throughout the game you're going to ruin the experience completely and miss 2/3 of the content.
I don't agree. There's a reason stealth isn't a skill category: the game assumes you are always at least attempting it, it's core to the gameplay and not a side attraction or build choice.
So you actually do agree with me. The reason I said "supposed premise" is because that's literally what the developers said, but in reality it ruins the game if you treat it as a straight shooter.

JRPGs have the problem of being trivially easy, but filled with content. Deus Ex's gameplay is relatively unintuitive and takes a couple of hours of playtime to learn. You can't just jump in and start playing it like it's Doom or Half-Life. So I can see someone getting bored of either kind of game, but for different reasons.
>everything about it is cool except the gameplay
This isn't even a bad thing for me like it is for most people. I had most of my fun in that game exploring, solving puzzles, finding items and finding ways through areas. Yeah the action is janky and poorly implemented but I didn't really care, I put most of my skills into exploration (hacking etc) and combat-wise just put all upgrades and points into the pistol and sword which made most enemies a breeze on normal.
>Cybernetically enhanced government agent grown in a lab funded by God knows how many cash dollars' worth of money from investors and taxes comes fresh out of training not knowing how to aim a gun unless you hold completely still for 6 seconds to hit something accurately
I just run up to people and shoot them point-blank in the forehead. Even my non-combat hackerman builds who downgrade the pistol skill at character creation can do that just fine, thanks.
The music alone is a good reason to keep playing, I wish the Paris brown levels and the subway ruins were shortened and the combat was better but whatever.
I didn't like it the first time either. It became lot more enjoyable after I stopped worrying so much about getting caught. Unlike most stealth games, it feels like getting caught and dealing with the consequences is meant to be part of the experience. If that makes sense.
i thought it was pretty great, quit at the paris part though because man that sucked dick. going through it again now with a couple visual mods i'm havin fun, is there a way to change the lighting back though? the guide said you could change back classic lighting via the chat but i did that and it looks the same either way.
have you tried switching rendering from d3d to opengl?
I had a lot of graphical glitches that got fixed by that, but one new one was introduced 😐
I'm using that deus ex launcher to do that
it reduces it a little bit but in return it makes it unnaturally colorful, i can't take a print screenshot either for some reason. i'm using the launcher too and i got directx10 on the side for it, aside from the lights it's working out well, no visual bugs so far and it looks clean.
It's one of my favorite games of all time. The only two problems it has is that there's one boss who is completely unbalanced for pure stealth builds and the lighting honestly sucks. Point your camera at any unlit corner of the map and it's the same as looking at an endless void, there is no brightness to anything if there isn't a light source nearby.
Have you played with D3D10 renderer by chance? There is ClassicLighting=True variable inside the config with kentie's launcher to turn it back normal, look for it inside the user documents on windows.
DeusEx.ini should be accessible straight from Kentie's launcher window iirc, ClassicLighting=False text line (which you need to change to True) will already be written there if it concerns the problem you have.
You could also use this nifty tool for file searching otherwise if windows indexing is too unreliable https://www.voidtools.com/ or simply switch the renderer to something other than d3d10 through the ingame options.
i have the launcher but it doesn't seem to be in there. tried to change it ingame earlier but that didn't work. i checked my files instead and neither classic lighting nor advanced options are there.
It's under [D3D10Drv.D3D10RenderDevice]
Chances are you simply never tried d3d10, have proper lighting already and just need to fix the gamma. Iffy graphics improvement is a feature of d3d10, therefore the classic lighting switch.

was what it looked like for me beforehand. thanks for the neat software too.
>try to play Deusex with minimal or zero kills >game sucks >say frick it and complete missions by any means possible >game fricks
Don't fall for the nonlethal meme, it doesn't change much. Sometimes gas grenades and stuff are useful anyway though.
It kind of depends on the game. If the guards never ever wake up when they are knocked out (Deus Ex, Hitman games) then you might as well kill them. In MGS the guards can be noticed missing either way, I think if they find a dead body they will go on full search but if someone sleeps then they will just wake them up and tell them not to sleep. I could remember this wrong tho. It's mostly just about roleplaying.
I don't know what v(r) thinks about Splinter Cell Blacklist, but I liked the playstyle points there the best so far. You can go Ghost as in don't even touch anyone, in Panther you will eliminate everyone on the map stealthily or in Assault you go for front door attack.
Honestly never understood non-lethal gays especially in games like MGS where it's just as if not easier to go non-lethal.
A nonlethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance. That's not just a meme, dying enemies will alert nearby npcs, even if you kill them silently.
I played TNM and have been looking forward to the version 2 release finishing. Apparently they're mostly done, as of their September update.
I liked that the branching story paths felt more meaningful than the original Deus Ex. Overall, it feels like more Deus Ex. And so, so full of little touches and hidden things. I'd recommend it to anyone even a little curious. The whole forum-culture setting isn't much more ridiculous than the conspiracy-ridden world of Deus Ex itself.
Shit mod, not the worst but as with most Dood Sex mods GMDX is the only one worth actually using. I guess it's worth playing to see why it's shit but it really does slice my foreskin with some of the absolute garbage decisions they made.
It probably was good when it came, but now it's a messy and ugly sandbox without much direction. This game doesn't have the flow you feel in similar games after.
Yeah, because you start playing unrestrained in regards to lethal weapons and also already have most of the augmentations by that point.
The moment when you lose all your hardware and start to piece your progression recource-starved in a puzzle sort of way was the moment when the game opened up from a brand new perspective, not to mention the sheer ridiculousness of the level location itself and ensuing plot development anticipation. I do like nonlinear and exploratory levels the most, such as ny powerplant and versalife labs. Hong Kong was also quite cozy, although very short if you don't get sidetracked on searching out its secrets. And lategame gets blurry on my memory, might be in part with how deeply it plunges itself into conspirology without any new tricks and distractions.
Anyone has that "MJ12 Trooper: *coughs*" joke strip image?

Its not my favorite level, but the brief Chateau DuClare segment always sticks out in my mind for some reason. There's just something eerie about exploring that empty house while Nicolette reminisces about the empty rooms. For whatever reason its one of the most memorable moments of the game for me up there with the 747 & the seige at Paul's Apartment.
I was pretty surprised there ended up being no combat in that area whatsoever considering how large it was. I was MJ12 troops to start pouring in at any moment.
Mantling is a nothingburger. At best, you have to collect one fewer half-height box that was already nearby, or god forbid you actually occasionally get someplace that the overpowered speed aug would otherwise be used for. Breaks nothing.
I agree it's a very small impact, I just don't like making the jump augmentation less useful. Makes some puzzles a little mindless as well, too easy to just climb over stuff without speccing for it iirc.
"Deus Ex is just a shitty poor derivative shooter muddled with bland rpg elements, never succeeding at anything it does. Literally a meme game"
Lol get a load of this gay, eat shit
Dig the tunes, but the combo needs an upgrade. Anon, give Cloudbreakers a spin and dive into some fully immersive, motion-synced VR experiences in your whip. It's the next level sh*t you didn't know you needed.
Because it fricking sucks, it is literally Invisible War but somehow worse and with a piss filter. Anyone who pretends like HR is good is a homosexual poser or a zoomie wiener knobler.
Continue to play your gay ass peepee game because it had haha funny punch animation and le ebin super hero falling animation. This isn't even talking about the atrocious story or characters that lack any personality except being homosexual or moronic.
The game shouldn't even be called Deus Ex it should be called "French homosexual Future" the developers clearly had no intention of making a Deus Ex game and wanted to use the name to sell more titles to poopdicks who never played a DX game before but think it sounds cool, in other words a poser.
>a mod designed for people who already beat the game makes the game harder
Next you'll complain they fixed the bug where you can avoid losing all your inventory items
guys, is there an alternative rifle in the deus ex demo that cuts out before hong kong? I played that mistakenly as a kid and distinctly remember finding a different type of rifle in hell's kitchen. Looked like a UMP. I think it was in the basement of the NSF headquarters if I'm not mistaken. It's not in the true game as far as I can tell
I don't want to replay the thing all over again but it looked like a ump and had better base stats than the original rifle. I can remember for certain that it was after a door behind a complicated locking mechanism. I think this is on the ground floor of the building you have to activate where WS phones you when you do? Sorry, not the NSF headquarters basement.
I never actually used it, because I didn't want to ditch the weapon I had just spent all my upgrades on
>OP here, DX is actually my favorite game.
I'm mindshattered. What did you mean by this? Does DX stand for Deus Ex, then why did you post the OP? For what purpose? I don't get it.
if he said it was good there'd be 10 replies agreeing then it'd fall off the board. what else would DX stand for?
also, unrelated but is it just me who thought it was pronounced "deuse x"? it's actually "day-es x" it seems.
game is loads of fun if you go full melee with hp regen augs and dragons tooth, you just bumble around instagibbing everything, and can try and be stealthy before your next instagib rampage for shots and giggles, too.
if you're feeling really feisty you can use boxes to jump into a vent and crawl around before popping out and instagibbing everything.
The "aliens" in Drowned God are real Anunaki, so they're not like the Sci-Fi Greys of Deus Ex. Anon is pulling your chain. Grey aliens are space travelers that the counter culture drummed up to look the way they are. Anunaki were real extra terrestrials who lived/ruled over man 10s of thousands of years back. I think that anon believe both situations are fabrications so he thinks Drowned God's interpretation is cooler.
I thought so too at first, but you have to remember to put points into some sort of ranged weapon. It also helps to think of it less as a FPS with RPG elements and more like a RPG that happens to be in first person.

I didn't like it the first time either. It became lot more enjoyable after I stopped worrying so much about getting caught. Unlike most stealth games, it feels like getting caught and dealing with the consequences is meant to be part of the experience. If that makes sense.
The robot in the tutorial blew off all my limbs and I couldn't continue. 0/10
i thought it was pretty great, quit at the paris part though because man that sucked dick. going through it again now with a couple visual mods i'm havin fun, is there a way to change the lighting back though? the guide said you could change back classic lighting via the chat but i did that and it looks the same either way.
have you tried switching rendering from d3d to opengl?
I had a lot of graphical glitches that got fixed by that, but one new one was introduced 😐
I'm using that deus ex launcher to do that
it reduces it a little bit but in return it makes it unnaturally colorful, i can't take a print screenshot either for some reason. i'm using the launcher too and i got directx10 on the side for it, aside from the lights it's working out well, no visual bugs so far and it looks clean.
Who the frick are making these basic b***h OPs? Go frick yourself
Other than that though, 10/10.
Have you played with D3D10 renderer by chance? There is ClassicLighting=True variable inside the config with kentie's launcher to turn it back normal, look for it inside the user documents on windows.
not him but what do you have to type into what file for that?
Iffy graphics improvement is a feature of d3d10, therefore the classic lighting switch.
thanks for the help anon, had to key it in there manually but now it looks normal.
was what it looked like for me beforehand. thanks for the neat software too.
I like that explosives can be used as if they were just heavy lockpicks
>try to play Deusex with minimal or zero kills
>game sucks
>say frick it and complete missions by any means possible
>game fricks
Don't fall for the nonlethal meme, it doesn't change much. Sometimes gas grenades and stuff are useful anyway though.
Honestly never understood non-lethal gays especially in games like MGS where it's just as if not easier to go non-lethal.
Pepper gun is pretty good, you can run up to 2 or even 3 enemies if you are quick and spray their eyes before they can react and then KO them.
A nonlethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance. That's not just a meme, dying enemies will alert nearby npcs, even if you kill them silently.
>dying enemies will alert nearby npcs, even if you kill them silently
Shit game lmao
Y THO
in every [worth a damn] stealth game getting close to the target is rewarded with an ability to perform a silent takedown
>Why is being punished for silently killing enemies in a stealth game shit
Take a wild guess.
IMO best way is this
You can go for stealth, but if you fail, just deal with it
only load if you die
Master level heavy/demolition/swimming is the GOAT Denton
My "zero" kills run was a great experience
Not liking this and/or Earthbound probably means you're a shitty person with shitty taste. Frick man I can't imagine what it's like in your head.
I've been playing The Nameless Mod 2.0 recently. Anyone else try it? Really digging it so far, brings back a lot of memories
no but I have it downloaded
I played TNM and have been looking forward to the version 2 release finishing. Apparently they're mostly done, as of their September update.
I liked that the branching story paths felt more meaningful than the original Deus Ex. Overall, it feels like more Deus Ex. And so, so full of little touches and hidden things. I'd recommend it to anyone even a little curious. The whole forum-culture setting isn't much more ridiculous than the conspiracy-ridden world of Deus Ex itself.
Shit mod, not the worst but as with most Dood Sex mods GMDX is the only one worth actually using. I guess it's worth playing to see why it's shit but it really does slice my foreskin with some of the absolute garbage decisions they made.
shut the frick up homosexual
You can't take me, anon. I've seen your specs.
Your a dumb gay kid. And you should get slapped around.
https://github.com/TheMarkie/ue1launcher
why can't you answer the question? what does this have over kenties?
It is the greatest game of all time
a maxxed gun skill turns the combat into counter strike, you get instant accuracy as soon as you stop moving
It probably was good when it came, but now it's a messy and ugly sandbox without much direction. This game doesn't have the flow you feel in similar games after.
You have no idea what you are talking about
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
I drive a chevy
It picks up once you get out of New York.
What's your favorite level and why is it Hell's Kitchen 1?
Hong Kong has better music.
I like the escape
Paris was pretty awesome
Hong Kong and everything you do there is pretty cool because that's when the game starts to get going.
Yeah, because you start playing unrestrained in regards to lethal weapons and also already have most of the augmentations by that point.
Anyone has that "MJ12 Trooper: *coughs*" joke strip image?
I absolutely love running around France and doing burglary on every single apartment.
Hell's Kitchen had a lot to do, easily the best part from early game,
but my favorite has always been Vanderberg.
Because it insisted upon itself?
you actually have to be trolling not to like deus ex. Get the mods though, especially the combo one that lets you mantle
Do not turn on mantle, the game is not balanced for it
Mantling is a nothingburger.
>GOAT
I 'member playing some mod which gliched my character and I looked like a multicolor cyberpunk pimp, it was cool
Dig the tunes, but the combo needs an upgrade. Anon, give Cloudbreakers a spin and dive into some fully immersive, motion-synced VR experiences in your whip. It's the next level sh*t you didn't know you needed.
Wasn't a fan of any of them until Mankind Divided.
Amazing game.
Then i went back and played Human Revolution. Good too.
But all the others, meh. Kinda poopy.
Disgusting homosexualry, MD is shit and HR is the worst of the series, and one of the worst games ever made.
Agreed. I can’t believe people shill for those trash games.
>one of the worst games ever made
I swear to God you boomer gays are so histrionic about games. Actually suck start a 12 gauge.
Gay kid talking about sucking something.
The game shouldn't even be called Deus Ex it should be called "French homosexual Future" the developers clearly had no intention of making a Deus Ex game and wanted to use the name to sell more titles to poopdicks who never played a DX game before but think it sounds cool, in other words a poser.
have a nice day Black person homosexual.
>French homosexual Future
kek
install GMDX, they said
it's better, they said
They fricking cucked the pipe path with an extra laser.
what the frick graphics are those?
The deus sex graphx enhanced mod
Cant seem to find it. Last time I played Deus Ex I used bumpmaps and shit, hard to find graphics mods compatible with gmdx
Anon .. I was fricking joking kek. Sorry, idk what it's called
that's your issue? In a mod like that?
>a mod designed for people who already beat the game makes the game harder
Next you'll complain they fixed the bug where you can avoid losing all your inventory items
guys, is there an alternative rifle in the deus ex demo that cuts out before hong kong? I played that mistakenly as a kid and distinctly remember finding a different type of rifle in hell's kitchen. Looked like a UMP. I think it was in the basement of the NSF headquarters if I'm not mistaken. It's not in the true game as far as I can tell
Unique guns is a Shifter mod thing I'm pretty sure.
It was the cd demo
Oh then I have no idea why it would have a different kind of rifle. That's interesting.
I never actually used it, because I didn't want to ditch the weapon I had just spent all my upgrades on
https://archive.org/search?query=deus+ex+demo
maybe you can find it again
Let me guess, you gave up after the first level and never tried doing anything wacky with it or read the logs, i would hate it too like that
Why does the first level rock but then it’s gay?
>OP here, DX is actually my favorite game.
I'm mindshattered. What did you mean by this? Does DX stand for Deus Ex, then why did you post the OP? For what purpose? I don't get it.
if he said it was good there'd be 10 replies agreeing then it'd fall off the board. what else would DX stand for?
also, unrelated but is it just me who thought it was pronounced "deuse x"? it's actually "day-es x" it seems.
I always pronounced it Doos-X until I heard a bunch of people saying Dey-us X. Which if I am reading your post right you did the same shit.
game is loads of fun if you go full melee with hp regen augs and dragons tooth, you just bumble around instagibbing everything, and can try and be stealthy before your next instagib rampage for shots and giggles, too.
if you're feeling really feisty you can use boxes to jump into a vent and crawl around before popping out and instagibbing everything.
You just not very good.
People are always talking aboutnthis game on /p ok saying sayimg that it is soft disclosure for aliens
The CHAD Drowned God did it better than virgin ex
How so?
The "aliens" in Drowned God are real Anunaki, so they're not like the Sci-Fi Greys of Deus Ex. Anon is pulling your chain. Grey aliens are space travelers that the counter culture drummed up to look the way they are. Anunaki were real extra terrestrials who lived/ruled over man 10s of thousands of years back. I think that anon believe both situations are fabrications so he thinks Drowned God's interpretation is cooler.
>Sci-Fi Greys of Deus Ex.
But the Deus Ex Greys are just shaved monkeys.
Drowned God doesn't have only one alien species. The other one is literal demons in disguise, and yes they are also real.
