it's both. the text is gibberish when upscaled, then a human needs to go in and manually edit the text to make it legible again. the problem comes when you get an ESL to do a very simple task that requires basic english skills.

If it were as easy as that, the fonts would more closely match the originals. So would the texture behind the signs and the designs. Not even SDXL (which didn't exist at the time) or openai's dalle model can make consistent, coherent text.
Notice how all the new signs have new graphics (like the hotdog one is literally a clipart image off of google.)

This wasn't in the original game, it's a mistake made by some guy who is upscaling and remastering the game as a side project (to the point he's even animating the cutscenes instead of using 3d models). He fricked up upscaling the original image and thought it said feef but corrected it when it was pointed it out.
jokes aside even if some of the art looks pretty wonky on this mod, i am impressed at how the reanimated scenes actually look pretty good for someone who has zero prior experience
