I don't get it

Why does gen Z have show so much spite and hate towards Earthbound?
Even if you use the quirky RPG discourse as a reasoning, the Mario RPG games would later do the same thing and they don't have the same reputation.

I've seen plenty of Earthbound hate, too.

I think it's mostly just people who aren't into jRPGs trying it out and finding out that the only jRPGs they actually like were the ones they played when they were 14.

These people don't actually know what Earthbound is. They just know that it's cited as an inspiration for Undertale, and they've already decided they don't like Undertale, because it's popular.
Stop taking Ganker's opinion on anything seriously, is what I'm saying.

A bit of that, Undertale got a massive annoying fandom so the contrarian came out (they're both great BTW)

A bit of that too, I've also seen the other way around where hardciore EB fans, on starmen dot net for example, don't like anything beyond the Mother series

      It's the opposite
      YOU never played earthbound
YOU didn't spend a good hour or two wondering when the frick other characters would show up in your party
YOU didn't experience a steep level curve where enemies are either grotesquely overpowered or so easy they're auto defeated. Nothing in between.
YOU didn't deal with shitty condition after shitty condition for just booting the game up like "home sickness" which is an invisible condition for not calling your mom occasionally, or worse...mushroom. You know what mushroom is? It's Pokemon confusion mixed with poison, mixed with it fricks with your D-pad outsode of combat. Oh what fun! Surely that isnt worthy of a bomb threat to the devs!

All this, and it's history of draconian anti piracy measures, the fact that it was clearly just one big allegory for abortion because as always, asiatics are all depraved child molesters were abused as children

Challenge doesn't make it suck, in fact it would be worse if you weren't a little wary of encounters. As I see it the game only has 2 flaws, one is being able to get softlocked, the second is how the areas after Fourside have a weaker identity than the urban settings. With a couple exceptions the first half of the game is much more memorable.

It's a referential joke. It knew it was being a campy parody of the (J)RPG genre. As much as people claim their lack of being able to use the bike was "annoying" or "bad development," it was quite the opposite; it was purposely designed to be jarring for the person holding the controller for the past 4 or 5 hours.

The main appeal was the setting.

If I remove my nostalgia goggles, Mother 3 is my favorite because of the added gameplay improvements like the musical attacks. It steps out of the "rpg satire" and into "being it's own thing" in a good way. Mother 1/2 though have the more straight forward romp through a weird America vibe though, and my nostalgia goggles love that shit. They are all good though, I got repro English translation carts to play them on my SP for true SOVL.

You're a normie then, because the very first thing a mediocre RPG will try and do to mask the fact that it's mediocre is by adding gimmicky garbage such as timed hits. In M3's case, it's the worst kind since there's no visual indicators for it and relies purely on sound, AND the timing window is shitty even when playing on actual hardware.

I did play Earthbound, but it's just a generic JRPG, and I don't really like those anyway. Any criticism about it's gameplay can be applied to Final Fantasy which is equally boring.

You can be sure the brunt of any new wave of negative sentiment toward Earthbound is coming from that one meme people keep posting about "Earthbound inspired indie RPGs about depression".

Also, the people posting those memes can't name ten games that supposedly are that thing.

OP, nobody actually has any opinions about this controversy. I mean, there are seemingly human entities that will claim to, but they are nobodies. Here is how actual people react to EarthBound:
99.999% of them never play it or think about it.
Some of the remainder play it and like it a lot.
Some of them play it and become bored or annoyed, and likely give up on it before finishing.
Some of them play it and think it's just okay.

"Gen Z" is not a person, so it doesn't have any opinions about any topic. If you encounter an individual, purportedly human noise source that periodically emits this type of nonsensical opinion, you should consider it to be something like a recording being played by a machine that's set to repeat, and move on without assigning any significant meaning to its seemingly passionate words.

i love earthbound (played it at release originally) but didnt like mother 3 at all. i only played it once (the day the english translation dropped back in 2008 or whenever). to be fair the rhythm combat didnt work on my emulator at the time, but i just didnt care for the game at all. took way too long to get your actual party together, and i didnt like the time jumps and unnecessary melodrama which didnt fit the art style or the type of game it was at all. mother 1 is good but the battle system has not aged well at all. too time consuming for what it is. any time i replay that now i use the easy mode hack or just outright disable random encounters after ive had my fill. i doubt i will ever play mother 3 again but the other games i will for sure

      >What is gen Z or similar people opinions about Mother 3?
Since it is very unclear which age-group you might be asking opinions from, I'll state the standard definition of "Generation Z" claims people born between 1996-2010.
I was born 1987. I don't think my opinion applies to "Gen Z."
I played Earthbound when it was released sometime in 1995 as an 8-year-old.

      >And to you anons...did you liked Mother 3?
I played it as soon as it got its fan-translation (Tomato) widely available sometime in 2008 or 2009.
No, I did not like Mother 3. I found its plot "really fricking gay." Lucas was "pathetic," Duster was oddly gymnastic despite his explicit limp, Kumatora was cute, Boney was fine, I guess. The music was alright but its GBA tone and harsher battle themes is far less enjoyable when compared to Earthbound's. The setting was too fantastical and the story took itself too seriously.
It lost its "campiness" feel and its world wasn't one I wanted to explore. Aside from visual cues, it does not share its tone with Mother 1 or Earthbound at all.

      >Do you prefer Mother 2 over 3 or the inverse?
I am immensely nostalgic, and genuinely love, Earthbound.
I played Mother 3 once and I ultimately regret doing so.

it's mostly just redditors/hipsters/etc that hate this game as well as many others because it's trendy for them to scream "overrated!". Most of them don't even like video games, but will preorder every trendy game they are told and spend the next few weeks shilling it. Real people who may not like Earthbound would just go "eh it's not for me" and move on. The ones that scream about it are just soulless redditors.
