Disaea's only really grindy if you want to fight the post-game bosses. The main story is pretty straightforward.

That's because you're not playing Disgaea 2, which has better gameplay and item worlds.
It's still roughly the same. This game is for people who like to see numbers get astronomically huge, yet still have enemies who can one shot them. It gives the impression of a game that doesn't end.

It's just JTRPG with everything including the kitchen sink thrown in. It's like Pokemon, where they essentially threw away everything but battles and made the plot totally pointless.

If you like tactical JRPG battle games, this is about the peak.

Hour of Darkness dub cast was good and I don't understand why morons use JP voices with the localized scripts unless one of the VAs is unbearable. Just play in 日本語, pleb

Video games dubs where they're just dubbing over text tend to come out significantly better than the anime dubs, just because they have more freedom to emote without having to match the lip flaps. Disgaea is probably the best example of that, because it has an anime dub that uses the same cast but sounds significantly worse. (except the next episode previews, where the actors all suddenly go back to sounding like they did in the games since there's nothing on-screen)

Any reason for Switch in particular over PS4? Admittedly, being able to play it wherever I go would be pretty handy for doing more grinding, like I did on the PSP version...

You literally didn't play the game or are moronic, probably both. Disgaea 1 and 2 don't need any grinding at all for the main story. The optional super bosses sure.

Fun story, fun gameplay, get as OP as you like is an actual feature.
Endgame grind is entirely optional, like continuing to play an MMORPG after you complete the story content and dungeons once.

its just a solid srpg on the PS2 during a time where it still didnt have much good competition
there were a ton of little cameos and autismal challenges to grind for and it was during a time where live service games were less common/mainstream so casuals/kids would just waste a whole summer spamming winged slayer over and over

also the story and characters are cute wtf it was the early 2000s and people were still into soft gothic weeb stuff so demons and netherworld and overlords its all so adorable
    and king krichevskoy is best daddy ;_;

This is also a big factor. It really played into the "cute Halloween" vibe that was popular around that time.

That is the appeal, that said the later games (especially 2) do it a lot better, the difference between 1 and 2 is ridiculous.

  15. 1 month ago

    That's the appeal.

The entire original premise of Disgaea was that it was a parody of anime/JRPG troped from an autist's perspective and what an autistic person would find to be el oh el so randumb wrench tossed into the machine would be. It's why the numbers go brrrr and they got a lot of historical voice actors for the dub. Fricking Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers is the English VA for Laharl for example.
It was such a crazy, nonsensicle mess of an idea that wasn't just done well but done incredibly, but if the niche it is going for isn't for you, you will hate it.

My only complaints are that the original Etna English voice actress was perfect... and then they replaced her with a common "UGUU AM I CUTE?" anime dub voice and personality, sabotaging everything about her core character.

Gameplay-wise it's "what if I grinded 500 wild boars in World of Warcraft to level up higher than I am meant to be for this content to breeze through it like an overpowered god?" sentiment some very select people have, and it does it flawlessly. At least woth the first two ganes, specifically the first one.

      Anonymous

at the time games just did not have so high levels and damage numbers. Normal SRPGs had numbers go up maybe to the hundreds, or the thousands if it was Final Fantasy. World of Warcraft had what, level 70 as a god tier character? Then in Disgaea you could toss people in the sun and do 132 422 892 244 points of damage, gang up on the enemy with several people, summon an army of archers turning your opponent to swiss cheese, do all sorts of crazy anime attacks, and level up your characters up to lvl 9999 and your weapon to lvl 100 and your attack skills and whatever else. It was unheard of in 2003 when it came out and wowed everyone.

oh and the story was the absolute opposite of most "play the hero, defeat evil" games. you are the son of satan trying to re-conquer Hell, all your vassals are trying to backstab you, you have fend off angel assassins and destroy heaven, and also destroy Earth as a side plot. even the original serial number of the game was something like SLUS-20666.

      >The entire original premise of Disgaea was that it was a parody of anime/JRPG troped from an autist's perspective
this, entire game is full of deconstructions of anime tropes and 4th wall breaks, plus and inbetween episodes you have Etna doing straight up anime parodies. Revolutionary Girl Etna (Utena) for example. You also get to beat up Power Rangers too.

      >PSP
I don't know. I feel like the new Etna VA really changed Etna's characterization with her performance. I wasn't a fan and the story is the strongest point of D1.

fun fact, Etnas original english voice was the same person who did Konoko in Oni.

Don’t care much for the genre, but it is extremely based that the official artist for these games also made porn of the characters

he didn't do outright porn, he just drew them naked, but that's because the clothes are separate layers on the art and it's just a case of "one dot for each nipple".
he also drew nudes for Keio Flying Squadron.

That is the appeal, that said the later games (especially 2) do it a lot better, the difference between 1 and 2 is ridiculous.

sequels only improved the grinding and graphics, everything else became stupider and stupider.

Appeal of the series? Grind autism, interesting character building system and unique to the series mechanics.
Appeal of 1 specifically? Most interesting storytelling in the series, best atmosphere, most iconic cast that appears in every sequel in one form or another, unique strider class that changes the game A TON and was removed from sequels, radically different designs for certain classes.
    I think that's mostly it.
Also I wanted to ask something about series myself. Did people like skill store stuff that appears from 3 onwards? After playing 3 and 4 in full I feel like I hate it and want to go back to just spamming my skills to improve them like it was in 1 and 2.

For Disgaea specifically, I actually looked it up, pretty sure that story for 1 and 2 were done by guy credited as a producer, wiki doesn't even have writer section for disgaea 1.
Disgaea story started getting much weaker from 3rd game and that is also the point where they started to call guest writers to help them. So I think guest writers fricked it up.

      >radically different designs for certain classes.
this too. Disgaea 1 had more utilitarian, "darker" designs. it felt like a saturday morning cartoon like Captain Planet but turned upside down and inside out and played from the bad guys perspective. It's like you had a movie with the serious premise of Star Wars on the outside, but the plot is about the Spaceballs winning.

Disgaea 2 and later had everything dumbed down to anime kawaii uguu. It wasn't a parody anymore, it was just a dumb generic anime story.

I liked how D1 cap mages by lore were schizophrenic dudes with detoriating mental health, mumbling spells constantly, and was disapointed with how D2+ turned cap mages into typical soft-spoken shota archetype character for some reason.
So I agree that D2 was dumbed down a bit, but I think it was still ok. A very by the book story, but it at least felt a bit sincere in what it was doing. Real end was when post ironic evil academy D3 shit started and things got downright bizzare, in a bad way, from story down to even basic things, like overworld music now having annoying vocals with singer fricking yelling and shit.
